THE TERRIFIC TRIO--Much of Kansas City’s success can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the trio of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...Herrera and Davis each worked yesterday in Yankee Stadium while Holland was given another day to rest a tight triceps...Davis responded over the weekend with his first two saves as a professional...the trio has combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 72.0 innings in this big league best 31-12 span that began on July 22 for a 0.38 ERA while fanning 78 and holding the opponents to a collective .152 average (37-for-244)...Herrera has a streak of 27.2 consecutive scoreless frames alive, which spans his last 28 outings...the only pitcher in baseball with a longer active streak is Davis, who is in the midst of a 32-appearance streak with 29.2-straight shutout innings...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 21.2 innings (1.25 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 17 of his last 18 save chances, including his 16th consecutive conversion last Wednesday night for his 42nd rescue. A WIN WITHOUT THE MAGIC NUMBER--Kansas City didn’t even get to its ‘magic number’ of four runs in two victories combined in New York, but with shutouts it didn’t matter...KC is now 17-53 when scoring fewer than four runs, but when the offense can put at least four on the board, the Royals are an outstanding 62-9...since the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City is an astounding 126-23 when scoring four or more. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL’S ELITE--Wade Davis had to step in for closer Greg Holland over the weekend in New York, but that didn’t phase the freshly-turned 29-year old (his birthday was yesterday) as he locked down the first two saves of his professional career on Friday and Sunday...he possesses the Majors’ longest scoreless inning streak at 29.2, while his season ERA of 0.71 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 51.0 innings for a 0.18 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 56 outings (58.0 innings) for a 0.31 ERA, while fanning 91...he opened the year going almost four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31. HOLLY GETTING A REST--Greg Holland has had the last couple days off to rest a tight triceps, but the KC closer still ranks second in the A.L. with 42 saves...he is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for KC since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...Holly has made good of 42 of his 44 tries this year, including 35 of the last 36 and 16 in a row...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 82 of his last 85 attempts (96.5%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 77) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in 107.1 innings for a 1.17 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 109-for-119, the best save pct. at 91.6 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City’s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, Holland has gone 105-for-112 in save situations, the most saves in the majors while Holly’s 93.8 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances.
