Doha Golf Club Doha Doha Golf Club A Desert Oasis Nothing reflects the natural beauty and diverse landscape of Qatar more than Doha Golf Club. Designed by Peter Harradine and unveiled in 1997, the 7,312-yard 18-hole Championship Course and floodlit 9-hole Academy Course provide a variety of challenges that will appeal to both the novice golfer and the seasoned professional. Eight strategically-positioned lakes, 65 giant cacti, numerous imposing limestone rock formations and an abundance of lush and lengthy green fairways present a startling contrast to the desert that lies beyond. Doha Golf Club is home to the annual European PGA Tour Qatar Masters, now co-sanctioned by the Asian PGA Tour, with Doha’s Championship Course proving to be one of the longest par 72 courses on the tour. The Clubhouse The Arabian-style Clubhouse The architecture of the Arabian-style clubhouse, with its marble interiors, outdoor terraces and restaurants, is based on that of a typical Qatari house. It features handmade gypsum, traditional artifacts, and solid teak doors imported specially from Thailand and hand-engraved in Doha. Beautifully-crafted marble, internal waterfalls and a central fountain create a cool and welcoming atmosphere. The Restaurants Doha Golf Club also offers inviting restaurants that are open to the general public. The clubhouse’s second floor houses the Oasis Bar, where members and their golfing guests can relax after their game and enjoy a snack or light meal in a friendly and comfortable surrounding, overlooking the stunning views of the 18-hole Championship Course. Experience the tranquil ambiance of Fairways Restaurant, Doha Golf Club’s latest fine dining outlet, also located on the clubhouse’s second floor, specialising in serving culinary favourites with an International flair. Fairways Restaurant is an elegant and extravagantly-decorated room, open to members, families and the general public daily for business luncheons and fine dining. Spikes Lounge is a fusion between bar and club in a modern and exclusive intérieur surrounding. It is located on the ground floor of the Doha Golf Club clubhouse, overlooking the magnificent vista of the 9th and 18th greens. Spikes Lounge is a fun, upbeat place to grab a bite to eat or socialise with friends in a relaxing atmosphere. Conference And Catering Located on the greens adjacent to the clubhouse and overlooking the spectacular view of the 18- The Championship Course hole Championship Course, the Marquee is a solid- sided, air-conditioned tent measuring 25m x 25m. The two floors of the Marquee and its landscaped surrounding can host between 250 and 3,000 people and it is the ideal location for dinners, banquets, weddings, conferences and seminars. The Marquee’s modern audio visual equipment and conference facilities will make your event truly memorable. 131 Doha Doha The Al Majlis Suite offers extensive facilities for organizations wishing to host corporate functions, meetings, product launches and seminars. This elegant meeting room offers comfortable seating for up to 50 people, with an array of audio visual tools to satisfy any groups’ requirements. Championship Course Ever since 1998, the club has hosted the prestigious Qatar Masters tournament, now held annually in March as part of the European PGA tours schedule. Each year many of the world’s top golfers compete on the club’s unique and challenging Championship Course – measuring 7,312 yards from the tournament tees and designed by Peter Harradine, one of the world’s leading golf course architects. Each of the 18 holes varies dramatically in character, of which the 9th (581 yards) and the 18th (634 yards) are true giants. Of the par 4- 10th Hole at Doha Golf Club holes, the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 14th and 15th are all outstanding tests, between 404 and 466 yards long. The course is a real pleasure for long-hitters, as hazards such as natural rock formations, sand bunkers and water are all plentiful. Lush green fairways, greens and water hazards now dominate an area, which, nine years ago, was a barren desert landscape. To complete the transformation from desert to golf course, 1,300 palm trees, 10,000 trees and 5,000 shrubs were planted together with 65 cacti specially imported from the Arizona desert. Eight artificial lakes ensure that the 150 hectares of manicured fairways and superb greens are maintained to a standard that has won unanimous praise from both PGA European Tour players and officials. Doha Golf Club hosts a number of local, regional, and international tournaments. It also welcomes companies planning to sponsor or organise corporate events. Corporate entertainment is Doha Golf Club’s speciality, and the Club can organise your whole day’s golfing itinerary. Academy Course For golfers who find the challenge of the 18-hole Championship Course a little too demanding, the club offers a 9-hole floodlit Academy Course, ideal for the novice and less-experienced golfers. With a length of 2,844 yards, this course offers spectacular views of the West Bay Lagoons and is maintained to the same high standard as the Championship Course. Its floodlights enable golfers to manage a round after Golf Coaching at Doha’s Golf Academy work and play until midnight. Golf Academy The club’s Golf Academy is a state-of-the-art teaching and practice facility featuring superb custom-built chipping, putting, and bunker practice areas. The academy brings together a multinational team of dedicated PGA teaching professionals with a wealth of golfing knowledge and experience from some of the world’s most exclusive golf clubs. It offers professional coaching at all levels through individual, group, junior packages, and golfing programs. Playing lessons are also available. The Golf Academy aims to help golfers by using professional knowledge, hi-tech equipment, good communication skills, and the simplest and most effective teaching methods, making it easy to learn the game. All of the club’s tuition programmes offer the unique opportunity to use the V1 Video Swing Analyser, the latest in hi-tech computer and video equipment. 132 133 Doha Doha Also available is the Explanar Golf Training System which has been designed by English professional Luther Blacklock and is widely used around the world. World-renowned coach Butch Harmon pays tribute to the effectiveness of the Explanar system, saying that it takes the 7th Hole at Doha Golf Club place of every other teaching aid available. The club’s Golf Academy also features a well-equipped gymnasium boasting a range of equipment and professional instructors to offer one-to-one personal training, if required. Qatar Masters – now co-sanctioned by the European PGA Tour and the Asian PGA Tour The Qatar Masters has been a regular feature on the European Tour schedule since the inaugural event in March 1998. This event has proven to be very popular with the players, the majority of whom look forward to escaping a long winter season in the northern hemisphere. Doha Golf Club has welcomed many great champions in the past seven years with the event serving as a stepping-stone for some of the future stars, notably Paul Lawrie in 1999 and Adam Scott in 2002. Since winning in Qatar, both players have gone on to win many major events on the world stage. Past winners include: Andrew Coltart, Scotland Adam Scott, Australia Paul Lawrie, Scotland Darren Fichardt, South Africa Rolf Muntz, Netherlands Joakim Haeggman, Sweden Tony Johnstone, Zimbabwe Ernie Els, South Africa Doha is looking to expand its business with IAGTO Golf Tour Operators so for more information please visit www.dohagolfclub.com or contact [email protected].
