  • Bradfield: the Eleven Guide-Stoops Walk
THE ELEVEN GUIDE STOOPS OF BRADFIELD A 17 ½ mile Anytime Winter Challenge Walk This is a hilly walk with 2,989 ft of climbing, very scenic and mainly on quiet roads designed for those winter months as an alternative to wading through mud. It can of course be attempted at any time of year and indeed, there are 3 footpath alternatives (shown in red) for purists or those averse to road walking. These footpath alternatives are attractive and do not add any extra mileage. I have counted at least a dozen horse troughs by the roadsides, indicating that apart from a layer of tarmac, these byways have changed little since the invention of the petrol engine. There must also be a record number of seats on this route, most with extensive views – well done Bradfield Parish Council. I hope you will find the walk full of interest as you discover the 11 guide stoops of the Parish of Bradfield, reputedly the second largest in England. I cannot, however, claim all the credit for this walk – the inspiration was a fascinating booklet entitled The Guide Stoops of the Dark Peak, published and printed privately by Howard Smith. The reason I took a walk to seek out these guide stoops for myself was due entirely to the foot and mouth epidemic of 2002 when, of course, footpaths were out of bounds. What are Guide Stoops? These are the earliest form of signposts which each Parish had the responsibility to maintain. They date from the 18 th and 19 th centuries and were usually carved from gritstone.

  • On the Disturbances in the District of the Valley of The
Downloaded from http://pygs.lyellcollection.org/ by guest on September 28, 2021 mittee, for their kind assistance in making the arrangements for the meeting. The following communications were then made to the Society :— ON THE DISTURBANCES IN THE DISTRICT OP THE VALLEY OF THE DON. BY REV. WM. THORP, OF WOMERSLEY. Upon the last visit of the Society to Sheffield, I had the pleasure of describing some of the geological features of the neighbouring district, and particularly those of the country between Rotherham and Sheffield. I have again taken the liberty of giving a brief mining notice of the disturbances of the same district, because they are not only of such enor mous magnitude as to be of great interest to the geologist, but a knowledge of them is necessary to the successful min ing operations of that neighbourhood. Upon the former occasion, it was contended by one party that not only were the strata on the North side of the Don elevated above those of the South side, to the amount of 600 yards in vertical height; but that also there had been a horizontal lateral movement of the beds of the North side, in an eastward direction, to the length of five or six miles.^ * The proofs then adduced in support of a lateral movement were—1. That the various beds come from the North, up to the edge of the valley of the Don, but do not preserve their Northerly and Southerly direction across the valley, but are found several miles to the West; e. g.^the Silkstone coal ranges to Dropping Well, near Kimberworth, and is not found at the same depth until we arrive six miles West, at SheflSeld town.

  • Concern Over the Future of Moor View Farm
Summer 2012 The Official Newsletter of the Crosspool Forum Volume 9 Issue 2 Having a voice . Making a difference TM. 0ver 2700 copies delivered quarterly Crosspool News — crosspool.info Editor Ian Hague Concern over the future of Moor View Farm At a recent Open Meeting, concerns were raised by local residents, after those neighbouring Moor View Farm on Manchester Road had indicated that they were in receipt of a letter saying that demolition of the farm (known locally as Gosney’s farm) was due to take place on Monday 30th April 2012. Crookes Councillor Geoff Smith confirmed at the meeting that to his knowledge, no application to de- molish it or for planning permission has been received by the council. Those of you, who were up and about on Manchester Road around 8am on Monday 30th March, may have seen three men loitering near Moor View farm on Manchester Road. They were Ian and Steve from the Crosspool Forum, and Cllr. Geoff Smith. We were there just in case there was a demolition attempt. Fortunately we did not have to draw straws to decide which of us was going to dive in front of a bulldozer. There was no attempted demolition. The Building Regulations office has NOT given his permission to demolish the property and has sent a letter to the selling agent informing them that demolition cannot go ahead without a bat survey and a planning application being submitted for consideration. Cllr. Geoff Smith has been assured by the relevant Council officers that both the owners and the agent are fully aware that prior applications to the Planning Dept.
