MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic our Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services team worked around the clock to ensure Bristol residents had access to high quality programs, well maintained parks and open spaces, as well as essential youth development and family support services. We fostered community resiliency through the delivery of nearly 650 All Heart Park Packs directly to Bristol families ensuring our young people stayed active while socially distancing. We provided low cost child care services to over 755 students on remote learning days. The parks served as a partner for the schools free lunch program feeding nearly 10,000 Bristol youth, as well as vaccine clinic sites which vaccinated approximately 350 over the course of a week. As vaccines continue to be administered across the state and COVID-19 guidelines are lifted, our team is emerging with a renewed sense of hope for the future and what is shaping up to be a very busy summer at the parks. We are pleased to announce the return of our popular programs and events such as Summer FUN Camp, Little Explorers, Teen Adventure Camp, learn to swim classes, sports clinics and our Tuesday night Summer Concert Series. Additionally, the highly anticipated All Heart Pop-Up Park Series will be coming to a neighborhood near you (pg 5), and at long last we will be celebrating the grand re-opening of Page Pool with an event on June 18, 2021 (pg 6). For our baseball fans we are pleased to report the Bristol Blues will be returning to the newly renovated stadium for the 2021 season. Players and fans alike will enjoy a brand new field, sound system, state of the art LED light system, and more. For the first time ever, our Youth Services division in conjunction with the Bristol Central/Eastern High School Gay-Straight Alliance and the Bristol Blues will be hosting a Pride Night at the Park (pg 6).

New this summer we will be opening the All Heart Park Gear Shop located at the Rockwell Park Bathhouse building near the amphitheater which will provide young people the opportunity to access free recreational equipment when visiting the park. This includes bikes to be enjoyed at the mountain bike trails and brand new pump park (pg 3) as well as , skateboards, volleyballs, and more.

Our city parks, programs and services are more than just spaces and activities. They build community. And our City is emerging from COVID-19 stronger and more resilient than ever. We look forward to building community with you this summer- See you at the park!

Sincerely,

Dr. Joshua T. Medeiros, Ed.D., CPRE Superintendent Department of Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services City of Bristol

PUMP PARK BREAKS GROUND Construction is underway for a bike pump park at Rockwell Park, adjacent to the Stonehouse. A pump park is a bike track designed in a loop consisting of banked turns and other features that allow riders to learn to gain and maintain speed by riding the terrain rather than just pedaling. Pump parks are fun, a good workout, and a way to build mountain biking skills and confidence. The family-friendly pump park headed for Rockwell is designed for all ages and abilities and will serve as a training area for young people and adults to learn and practice their biking skills, prior to tackling our trail system.
