  • UI Design for Wearable Devices
FACULTY OF ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF PORTO UI Design for Wearable Devices Vitor Mota Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering Supervised by: Miguel Pimenta Monteiro (Assistant professor) Pedro Rocha (GlinttHS) January 2015 2 Abstract Smartwatches have been around for some time now (Ranger 2015), but 2015 is the year this wearable technology will finally get its boom in terms of popularity and growth. Technology giants like Apple, Google and Samsung are betting on their own-line of products such as the Apple Watch, Android Wear and Gear respectively (Apple Inc 2015a; Google Inc 2015b; SAMSUNG 2015). All of these devices are computation capable electronics with very small touch capacitive screens, limited number of hardware buttons with varying screen sizes and even shapes. Our research focused mainly on these constraints and how to successfully develop user friendly GUI’s for such small screens. The goal was to develop a model with guidelines to help developers provide easy to use and user friendly applications at a visual and interaction level to end users. To successfully achieve this, we first took a deep look at the available technology within these devices, including the framework each of the major platforms provide and the underlying hardware capabilities such as sensors like GPS, gyroscope, the use of the touch screen or microphone for user input and whether the shape of the device (round or squared) can have different effects on the design and usability. We also analyzed the impact of placement and arrangement of interface components having in mind that this technology, since it is a wearable watch, can be worn on both wrists and therefore will be used with only one hand that may obscure a different portion of the interface depending on which wrist the user uses it (Chandra and Raghunath 2000).

  • A Predictive Fingerstroke-Level Model for Smartwatch Interaction
Multimodal Technologies and Interaction Article A Predictive Fingerstroke-Level Model for Smartwatch Interaction Shiroq Al-Megren ID Information Technology Department, King Saud University, Riyadh 12371, Saudi Arabia; [email protected]; Tel.: +966-11-805-7839 Received: 24 May 2018; Accepted: 25 June 2018; Published: 2 July 2018 Abstract: The keystroke-level model (KLM) is commonly used to predict the time it will take an expert user to accomplish a task without errors when using an interactive system. The KLM was initially intended to predict interactions in conventional set-ups, i.e., mouse and keyboard interactions. However, it has since been adapted to predict interactions with smartphones, in-vehicle information systems, and natural user interfaces. The simplicity of the KLM and its extensions, along with their resource- and time-saving capabilities, has driven their adoption. In recent years, the popularity of smartwatches has grown, introducing new design challenges due to the small touch screens and bimanual interactions involved, which make current extensions to the KLM unsuitable for modelling smartwatches. Therefore, it is necessary to study these interfaces and interactions. This paper reports on three studies performed to modify the original KLM and its extensions for smartwatch interaction. First, an observational study was conducted to characterise smartwatch interactions. Second, the unit times for the observed interactions were derived through another study, in which the times required to perform the relevant physical actions were measured. Finally, a third study was carried out to validate the model for interactions with the Apple Watch and Samsung Gear S3. The results show that the new model can accurately predict the performance of smartwatch users with a percentage error of 12.07%; a value that falls below the acceptable percentage dictated by the original KLM ~21%.

All the used materials, references to the literature and the work of others have been referred to. This thesis has not been presented for examination anywhere else. Author: Kehinde Omotola Adebayo 30.04.2020 3 Abstract As wearable technology is becoming increasingly popular amongst consumers and projected to continue to increase in popularity they become probable significant source of digital evidence. One category of wearable technology is smart watches and they provide capabilities to receive instant messaging, SMS, email notifications, answering of calls, internet browsing, fitness tracking etc. which can be a great source of digital artefacts. The aim of this thesis is to analyze Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Fitbit Versa Smartwatches, after which we present findings alongside the limitations encountered. Our result shows that we can recover significant artefacts from the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier, also more data can be recovered from Samsung Gear S3 Frontier than the accompanying mobile phone. We recovered significant data that can serve as digital evidence, we also provided a mapping that would enable investigators and forensic examiners work faster as they are shown where to look for information in the course of an investigation. We also presented the result of investigating Fitbit Versa significant artefacts like Heart rate, sleep, exercise and personal data like age, weight and height of the user of the device, this shows this device contains artefacts that might prove useful for forensic investigators and examiners.

Galaxy Watch Special Index Click to jump to the page Samsung Galaxy Watch hands-on impressions Samsung launches the Galaxy Watch with new fitness features and improved battery life Samsung Galaxy Watch price and release date confirmed Samsung Galaxy Watch vs Gear S2 classic in pictures Samsung Galaxy Watch vs Gear S3 in pictures Samsung Galaxy Watch hands-on impressions The Galaxy Watch is finally here as the true successor to the Gear S3 following Samsung’s detour into a fitness-focused smartwatch last year with the Gear Sport. With the Galaxy Watch , Samsung has realized that one size doesn’t fit all, so the watch comes in both 42 mm and 46 mm varieties. But the sizes are not the only thing the Galaxy Watch has going for it, as we discovered in our hands-on experience. Impressions With the Galaxy Watch, Samsung is using the same button design as the Gear S3 Frontier for all variants. The big 46 mm version is like a mix between the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier and is also unique because of its two-color approach. The color of the bezel ring and the power and volume buttons is different from the rest of the body, and we have to say it looks quite refreshing. For the 42 mm variants, the Rose Gold version looks quite premium and classy thanks to the matte finish. At the back, the sensors are placed circularly and the sensor assembly sticks out from the watch for better contact with the skin (similar to the Gear Sport).

  • The Complete 2017 Smartwatch Buyer's Guide
The Complete 2017 Smartwatch Buyer’s Guide The smartwatch ecosystem is more diverse than ever. Fashion designers and fitness trackers have joined the ranks of electronics brands and computer manufacturers, offering watches designed for every taste and lifestyle – from office executive to fitness nut to outdoor adventurer, and just about everyone in between. Which is the right smartwatch for you? The answer depends on which features are most important to you. That’s why we’ve broken this guide down into six categories, and reviewed the top two smartwatches in each of them, in detail. Let’s dive The Complete 2017 Smartwatch Buyer’s Guide Compatibility Almost all smartwatches on the market are designed to pair with smartphones. Even most apps designed to run natively on watches still need to sync with their phone counterparts – and some smartwatches are completely dependent on phones to display the messages of their alerts and notifications. This means your smartwatch will be all but useless if it’s not compatible with your phone’s OS – so compatibility is the first feature you need to be absolutely sure about. As you’d expect, most Apple Watches works seamlessly with most iPhones. The situation gets slightly more complex in the Android smartwatch world, where all watches are compatible with Android phones, but vary in their compatibility with iPhones. For example, Samsung’s Gear S3 works with many Android devices, but not with an iPhone – while certain watches by LG and Huawei can display notifications on an iPhone, but can’t connect to the phone’s wi-fi or sync data with many iOS apps.
