Cover Story

When (Virtual) Experience Pays Off Imagine a consumer who has never flown first class – they may know that the service itself is more luxurious but may never actually go forward with booking that ticket. But what if providing them with a virtual look at everything the first-class experience really offers is all it takes to change their purchasing behavior? Not only is there a chance that customer is likely to spring for the more expensive ticket, but once they actually fly first class chances are they won’t want to go back to the economy seats.

While it may be easy to only associate virtual reality with gaming and entertainment, much can be said about the influence this immersive technology may have in a variety of different use cases. From high-end retail to hotel booking, the potential impact of virtual reality is reaching new industries in very innovative ways.

PYMNTS recently caught up with Hrvoje Prpic, founder and CEO of Trillenium, after a panel discussion at Innovation Project 2016 to gain some insight on virtual reality and its power to revamp luxury retail and high-end offerings as we know them.

Trillenium, a white-label virtual reality company that caters to the retail sector by providing 3-D, virtual and even offline applications, is aimed at turning shoppers of luxury goods and services into buyers via virtual showrooms.

As Prpic pointed out, these virtual stores are able to do a better job of showcasing and selling more expensive items to consumers by bringing them to the forefront, unlike online shopping, which allows consumers to easily sort by price and overlook higher-end goods.

But when it comes to the use of virtual reality within the retail space, it’s not just about buying, but also how much the consumer actually enjoys the shopping experience, Prpic explained.

In the same way a shopper may enter a brick-and-mortar retailer and take their time browsing the aisles and checking out new products, Prpic said he hopes people will invest time doing exactly that in virtual reality or 3-D applications.

However, retail isn’t the only place where Prpic sees virtual reality changing the way consumers purchase goods and services.

He used the example of choosing between a 2-star hotel and a 5-star hotel, with one costing $50 per night and the other $500 per night, respectively. How can a hotel ensure they are able to sell that 5-star hotel room over a much cheaper option?

“You have images and pictures but this is not the way to show your potential customer the actual experience that he or she will receive in that 5-star hotel room,” said Prpic, adding that it’s not just about the room size, but also about the quality of service and overall experience that can only be seen by being there, which virtual reality enables.

“You may look at pictures and it’s nice but you can’t get in. With virtual reality it’s immediate – you put the glasses on and you are there,” he added.

Not only do customers want to be wherever the virtual reality viewers can take them, but Prpic said they are more willing to pay whatever is needed just to get there.

On the flip side, businesses are also using virtual reality as a more improved way to facilitate knowledge transfer and education. Another business case Trillenium currently has in its pipeline involves a company that may have a physical showroom at its headquarters displaying how its products should be placed on shelves at merchant locations, but currently just sends sales representatives out with pictures in order to communicate that information to retailers.

Virtual reality can help to solve the challenges that come with this type of knowledge transfer by enabling sales representatives to instead provide merchants with the virtual experience of being at the company’s office and seeing the product displays first-hand, making it much easier to see how the products should be presented to consumers.

The demand for more unique and virtual experiences on the consumer side is clear, with researchers expecting nearly 6 million virtual reality hardware devices to be sold in this year alone.

But can the same level of interest be seen among merchants?

“Retailers still don’t understand, but we are trying to explain that value to them and when we present it they are usually excited and love the idea. But it’s going to take lots of time to show the true possibilities of virtual reality,” Prpic explained.

He noted that while virtual reality technology is still very expensive today, the end goal is for Trillenium to offer a multi-tiered platform that will enable even more merchants to offer their own virtual stores.

With the proliferation of virtual reality devices, from the fast-selling Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift headsets to McDonald’s turning its Happy Meal packaging into fully functional virtual reality headsets, a virtual reality disruption may be coming faster than we think.

Prpic said he isn’t worried about a lack of virtual realty hardware being a problem, as prices continue to come down. Plus, it is estimated that in just five years the market will be worth more than $80 billion, and he believes access to virtual reality will soon be available all over the world.

“Content is what we do and that’s what’s really on the other side. The content is what’s going to be in huge demand,” he added.

The PYMNTS.com Developer TrackerTM, powered by Vantiv, is designed to provide merchants with a view into the breadth and depth of eCommerce and commerce-related software developers, and the work being done to help merchants keep pace with the multitude of providers and technologies available in the payments landscape.

Here’s a quick snapshot of some notable news items from the last month: Payment authentication may soon be able to happen using a very uncommon biometric factor: the veins in a consumer’s wrists. A patent from technology giant Samsung was recently published related to a sensor that can essentially “read” a wearer’s veins as a way to establish identity. Not only will it compare a vein image in its memory to that of the current wearer to authenticate a person is who they say they are, but it may also be able to read and verify an individual’s unique pulses as well.

Google is taking a no-hands approach to payments. The company introduced its new payments app called Hands Free to the market with the goal of cutting out a user’s need to actually pull out their mobile device at the point of sale. With a simple phrase, consumers will be able to essentially pay and walk away without any physical contact with their phone or the terminal.

Spending loyalty points and miles while shopping online may be getting easier with a new eCommerce payment solution from Loylogic. The company’s PointsPay Checkout enables access to multiple loyalty currencies giving customers the ability to see more products and be a part of new reward categories.

See the Tracker News section for a full roundup of the latest happenings.

The Developer March Tracker Updates As of this month’s edition, we have profiled 90 developers, including 10 new additions to the Tracker: CardFlight, Ethoca, GiftRocket, Handpoint, Loylogic, payleven, Riskified, Sprout Social, Unleashed and Vistaar. The developer community members identified in the tracker are separated into three broad categories: Shopping and Payments, Operations, and Marketing.

We hope you enjoy this month’s tracker and we welcome your feedback. Don’t hesitate to tell us what you liked, who we’re missing and how we can make this report better by emailing us at [email protected].

Shopping and Payments News Covering the latest developments from the companies impacting how consumers shop and the methods and channels in which they make purchases.

Google reaches for hands-free payments Google’s new payment solution, Hands Free, allows users to pay with their mobile devices at the POS without actually having to touch their device. After downloading the app, signing up for the service and taking a picture, the service will later use location sensors to confirm when a user has entered aGoogle Hands Free enabled location. When it comes to paying, the shopper just has to say, “I’d like to pay with Google.” The cashier then authenticates a shopper via their initials and picture, and the transaction is complete. Google has signed a deal with First Data’s Clover POS to embed the service into its products and is currently working with other POS providers to do the same.

Optus adding NFC features Australian payments service provider Optus will add payment stickers and bands to its product offerings as a way to grow its user base beyond Android mobile devices. The new “Cash by Optus” service utilizes NFC technology and Visa’s payWave functionality to transform compatible smartphones into payment devices. The service currently supports purchases of under $100 as well as prepaid and post-paid billing solutions. The company has also released a SIM-based payment service called “Cash by Optus SIM” that allows users to pay with their NFC-enabled Android device without requiring a payment accessory.

Payleven sees $10M in new capital Mobile payments startup and direct competitor to Square, payleven, raised $10 million in its latest round of funding, bringing on Seventure Partners as an investor and increasing the firms’ total funding to $51 million. The company stated that the money raised will be used to expand into new products and increase customer acquisition initiatives.

Monopoly goes cashless Hasbro Gaming has released a new version of the classic Monopoly board game without paper currency. The new version comes fully equipped with an ATM-like device that can keep track of every player’s stock and transaction history, with no manual input required. The move comes at a time when board game innovation is gaining momentum. An article from ICv2 claims that the industry climbed to $880 million in 2014, representing a 20 percent increase in year-over-year sales.

Conversational commerce gets a boost Shopify released its shoppable smartphone keyboard, called Shopkey, that allows merchants to search their product catalogs straight from their keyboards and then links to relevant products directly to customers via any messaging app platform. Shopkey automatically converts the products into links that redirect shoppers to the merchant’s Shopify online store.

Why many merchants still aren’t EMV-ready A new study from the Strawhecker Group found that only 37 percent of merchant locations in the United States are EMV-ready — even four months after the much- publicized liability shift. The report identifies payment processor readiness, concerns over gateways, lack of technical resources in terms of staffing and other avenues as factors contributing to the low EMV adoption rate among merchants. The study covered 90 payment providers that service more than 3 million merchants.

Visa drives car-based commerce plans A deal between Honda, ParkWhiz and Visa will allow the payment processor’s Visa Token Service to be extended to automakers in order to enable car-based commerce transactions. The partnership will aim to provide solutions such as car-based commerce, fuel app concept (alarm for gas needs, search of stations and payment of reposition) and a parking app concept (enabling consumers to park and pay automatically via mobile for the spot, engaging in the exact cost for the time spent).

Why mobile pay may struggle in 2016 The Federal Reserve’s Retail Payments Risk Forum released its annual projections for the current year. Its forecasts for 2016 cover a range of topics and included the following predictions: cyber attacks will continue to be a top threat to payments security; mPOS payments will not take off in 2016; EMV chip card migration at the POS is expected to pick up; interest in blockchain technology will increase; and biometric technology will show improvement, but still won’t overtake the use of passwords.

China (finally) opens its doors to Just two days after its official launch in the Chinese market, the wallet Apple Pay reportedly had nearly 3 million payment cards activated for its service. China Merchants Bank, one of the 19 institutions signed on for the Apple Pay rollout, reported its customers connected 1 million bank cards to Apple Pay within the first couple days of the payment method becoming available, representing 35 percent of cards connected with Apple Pay in China.

Operations News The latest trends in how commerce-related players are managing data, safeguarding against security threats and overseeing the operational functions of their business.

One-Stop Developer Platform Enters Pilot Vantiv announced the pilot of DevHub, aimed at equipping developers with the ability to integrate omnichannel payments functionality directly into their software solutions via modern APIs on a single platform. The product strategy of the new offering ensures both payment acceptance and processing are supported, as well as making the integrations process easier to debug and maintain, Vantiv said.

Samsung patent goes for secure vein payments The company published a patent for a sensor that by being worn on the wrist can “read” the user’s veins and use that information for authentication matters. The technology, of interest for IoT applications like smartwatches, would take images of the user’s veins and compare those photos as well as measure her pulse as biometric security measures.

A chargeback guarantee brings on capital Riskified, an eCommerce fraud prevention firm, secured$25 million in a financing round led by Qumra Capital. The round included the participation of other players such as The Phoenix Insurance Company, NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Genesis Partners and Entrée Capital. The company claims its year-over-year growth has reached 400 percent.

Mastercard smartens up fraud prevention MasterCard released its new IQ Series in an ongoing effort to keep payments and commerce safe in a mobile world. The solution includes two products: Authorization IQ and Assurance IQ. The first is a system that authorizes payments using algorithms that work based on the consumer’s past 12 months of behavior. On the other hand, Assurance IQ allows merchants to pass all of the aforementioned information to MasterCard through an API. MasterCard will then use the information in its databases, combine all the other information that we have about the transaction — for instance, the merchant, the ATM, where it’s used — and then provide a score to the issuing bank.

Why TSYS joined forces with Ethoca The TSYS Transaction Recovery Network, powered by Ethoca, is a solution that is designed to alert all participating merchants within the network that a card is “bad” or fraudulent within minutes of that distinction being made. This information can then allow the merchant to take action to intercept a shipment and cancel an order so the transaction itself doesn’t, in fact, need to be charged back.
