3 DIRECTOR’S NOTE Caitlin Schlehuber

My Pasquerilla East Musical Company obsession began my sophomore year when I joined the How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying production as an Assistant Stage Manager. Needless to say, I have not looked back since. These past few years, I have met some of the most driven, creative and brilliant people who have changed my life for the better. Their passion and professionalism encouraged me to attempt my dream of directing my own show, which is the greatest decision of my Notre Dame career. As an senior, I can honestly say that my involvement in PEMCo has been the most rewarding experience in the past four years.

This show in particular will not be forgotten. Although It is easy to dismiss The Wedding Singer as an absurd, superficial presentation of the 80’s rife with over-the-top, stereotypical portrayals, I embrace the bravado of the show. It is a kind of lovable indulgence that allows us all to embark on a journey of love and confusion in the 80’s. In the show, mullets and shoulder pads abound, ridiculous allusions to 80’s icons are present throughout and the theme of excess is incredibly prevalent; it’s a time I’m sure we all want to go back to or at least look back on with a certain fondness. When I first saw this story unfold, it was neither the extravagant dance numbers nor the crazy costumes that made me fall in love — it was the uncomplicated numbers and the simple, but real, emotions conveyed by the actors. It is the idea that taking that risk on love is worth it and that personal relationships are far more important than material things, no matter how bedazzled they are. Though the characters never cease to entertain, it is in those poignant moments where they share the reality of the situation, despite the flashy dance numbers and neon colors surrounding them. The unavoidable superficial commercialism advertised sharply contrasts the instances of true honesty, allowing the audience to connect with these lovable, absurd, incredible characters.

It has been an honor working with such immensely talented people and our production would not have been possible without each and every one of them. Thank you to the incredibly dedicated cast and crew whose energy and excitement each day made this an amazing experience. You constantly inspire me and I am so thankful for your enthusiasm for the show. I would like to especially thank the best all female production team PEMCo has ever seen. To Sonia, for taking a bunch of songs and making it into a show. To Sam, for being a GoogleDocs goddess. To Maggie, for being my partner in crime when it came to cleaning, blocking, re-blocking and more cleaning. Thanks to my friends and roommates who were so understanding when every request to hang out is returned with a brief “rehearsal” text. I cannot wait to see you all once again. I also want to thank Brenna, Abby, Mom and Dad for their endless love and support. Thank you for always believing that I will succeed, even when I do not believe it myself.

Enjoy the show!
