WEST POMMERANIA - SHIPBUILDING AND METAL WORKING BY TRADITION

Shipbuilding and metalworking have a long tradition in Mecklenburg-West Pommerania. The region’s shipbuilding blossomed early in the 13th century in the times of the Hanseatic League. Over 250 years ago, when Friedrich the Great ordered the “Royal Prussian Ironworks in Torgelow“ built in 1753, the region began to develop into an iron foundry and metalworking centre.

In the 20th century shipbuilding and metalworking experienced highs and lows due to wars and nationalisation of the industries. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the shipyards were rebuilt into world-class facilities. Numerous small and medium-sized businesses in the metalworking industry have settled in the immediate vicinity of these shipyards. Joint projects between research institutes and businesses have evolved into a well-established network of interrelationships. The traditional economic sector of shipbuilding and metalworking industries has developed into the region’s most innovative sector.

SHIPBUILDING AND MARINE INDUSTRY IN WEST POMMERANIA

With its world-class shipyards West Pommerania is a future- oriented maritime centre of global importance. The marine industry is a key business area and a growth industry: Due to increasingly intensified utilisation of the oceans this industry offers many opportunities for growth and development. Shipbuilding - together with its suppliers, service providers and ports - represents the core of the marine industry. Traditionally shipbuilding has played a major role in West Pommerania. The local citizenry is closely tied to the shipbuilding and metalworking industries. Shipyards located in the region include the “Volkswerft“ shipyard in Stralsund, “Peene-Werft“ shipyard in Wolgast, “Schiffswerft“ shipyard in Barth as well as the “Horn“ ship-yard in Wolgast. Located in Greifswald, HanseYachts AG is one of the three largest serial boat makers of sailing and motor yachts worldwide. Its brands include “Hanse“, “Moody“ and “Fjord“.

The wide range of products available from the metalworking sector in West Pommerania includes various innovative products sold both in Germany and worldwide.

The iron foundries in Torgelow and Ueckermünde are well-known for their top marks in metallurgy and for their team spirit and know-how. Specialising in the production of castings for wind-powered electricity generators and plastic injection molding machines, these companies are also suppliers for shipbuilding and the motor car industry. In the University and Hanseatic town of Greifswald a number of companies specialise in tool manufacturing.
