Morris: Constitutional Solutions to the Problem of Diplomatic Crime and I NOTE CONSTITUTIONAL SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM OF DIPLOMATIC CRIME AND IMMUNITY I. INTRODUCTION No one is above the law. This principle has been a driving force throughout the great ideological experiment known as democracy. From childhood, we are told that people who commit crimes must answer for them. However, the simplistic nature of this notion fails to capture the whole truth of the nuanced system of international law. International law permits certain individuals to escape accountability for their crimes. For centuries, the principle of diplomatic immunity has enabled foreign diplomats to avoid prosecution for violations of the host country's laws. 1 The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, to which the United States is a party, has codified customary international law.2 The Vienna Convention grants diplomats, their families, and diplomatic property numerous protections.

Diplomats and People in Need To be used by the Brazilian Embassy in Stockholm 3 Diplomats and People in Need © Fábio Koifman and Jill Blonsky The two articles were written for this book and donated by the authors, for which the Embassy of Brazil expresses its profound gratitude. The cover photograph of Raoul Wallenberg. Para uso da Embaixada da República Federativa do Brasil 4 Preface A vision of humanity and responsibility In the late 1930s, society as a whole − and public opinion − had not yet fully embraced the idea of and attention to human rights and was not consistently engaged in humanitarian assistance. With the exception of the endorsement by a relative few, as the International Red Cross (1863), Save the Children (1919), those concepts became widely accepted only decades later. The League of Nations, an outcome of the Versailles Treaty of 1919, already had failed in its mission to protect citizens and maintain peace and was replaced with the establishment of the United Nations only in 1945, which in turn took a long time to become effective in the field of International Humanitarian Law. But in those troubled times when States failed to guarantee the integrity of their civilian citizens, men and women of principle acted on their own to defend the dignity and survival of many people, and among those heroic individuals were two great diplomats, a Brazilian and a Swede, who are exemplars of two very important traits for the career: diplomacy requires both passion and perspective.

  • The Diplomats Live at the Apollo
The Apollo Theater Presents Harlem Bred Hip-Hop Mega Group The Diplomats Live at the Apollo One Night Only Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. (Harlem, NY, October 24, 2018) The Apollo Theater is proud to present a special one night only concert featuring the return of hip-hop mega group and Harlem’s own The Diplomats, popularly known as Dipset as they reunite to launch a new album. The special event will take place on November 23 at 8 p.m. Artists Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freeky Zekey—collectively known as The Diplomats formed in 1997 in Harlem, NY. Following the success of Cam’ron’s solo album S.D.E., the group released what is now considered a classic album, Diplomatic Immunity in 2003. Pioneers in music distribution, known for their fashion forwardness and their unique way of approaching lyrics, the group went on to release more than 50 songs that cemented their place in hip-hop history. “They were a true grassroots movement, perhaps the last New York has seen. The crew's success was built on a combination of mixtape grind, hit singles, street DVDs, and a unique aesthetic vision. Coming up at a time when Atlanta was ascendant, the crew managed to keep New York City a hub of street rap into the new decade.”- Complex. “We are committed to celebrating the legacy of Black music and its effect on popular culture. Dipset is a perfect example of a group that started here in Harlem and made an impact on music that lasted decades,” said the Apollo Theater’s Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes.
