Baldelli, 37, is currently Tampa Bay's Major League field coordinator under manager Kevin Cash after he spent 2015-17 as that teams' first-base coach. From 2011-14, he was a Rays baseball operations special assistant, a position he took after retiring as a player following seven seasons as an outfielder in the big leagues. In the 2000 MLB Draft, Baldelli was the sixth overall pick by the Rays. The Reds began interviews with managerial candidates last month and have a long list of choices. Also interviewed were interim manager Jim Riggleman, former Red Sox manager John Farrell, former Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Giants vice president of player development David Bell, former Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens, Rays bench coach Charlie Montoyo, Pirates bench coach Tom Prince and Reds coaches Pat Kelly, Billy Hatcher and Freddie Benavides. Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams told MLB.com last week that he expected a second round of interviews with some of the candidates this week. Williams only noted that the list of contenders would be "cut down a lot" from the current total. Baldelli, 37, spent three seasons as the Rays’ first-base coach before he served as a Major League field coordinator this year, a newly created position. He worked with outfielders and focused on player development. A first-round pick in the 2000 MLB Draft, Baldelli played for seven seasons in the big leagues. He finished third in Rookie of the Year voting in '03 but dealt with injuries throughout his career. When he retired, he became a special assistant for baseball operations for the Rays. Baldelli was the youngest Major League coach in Rays history when he became a first-base coach in 2014 at 34. Billy Hatcher, the Reds’ third-base coach who also interviewed for manager, had the previous record for the youngest coach on Tampa Bay's big- league staff when he joined the Rays in 1998. Baldelli reportedly has received interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins managerial openings. The Reds have interviewed seven candidates outside of their organization: Baldelli, Joe Girardi, Brad Ausmus, David Bell, Charlie Montoyo, Hensley Meulens and Tom Prince. Montoyo is the Rays’ bench coach. There were five internal candidates to receive interviews at the end of the season: interim manager Jim Riggleman, scout John Farrell, Hatcher, interim bench coach Pat Kelly and first-base coach Freddie Benavides. Facing various minor league pitchers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, India nearly hit for the cycle. He hit an opposite- field double to right field in his first at-bat. He followed with an infield single, then smacked a pitch over the wall in left field. In a quiet atmosphere with no fans, his teammates cheered from the dugout as he crossed home plate on his home run, "Attaboy, Jonny!" Players report to the instructional league to work with coaches and shore up some weaknesses before they are off on their own in the winter months. It was the finish line on a long season for India, who starred at the University of Florida and helped his school to the College World Series. The No. 5 pick in the MLB Draft, India played for three of the Reds’ minor league teams, playing his last 27 games at Class-A Dayton. “I just had to find it in me to keep going,” India said. “I struggled a little bit, but it wasn’t because I was tired at all. Just mentally trying to figure it out. He crushed a HR to LF a few innings later. 8:19 PM - Oct 11, 2018 In 44 minor league games, which includes games at rookie-level Greeneville and Billings, the 21-year-old India hit .240 with six homers and 23 RBI. He owned a .380 on-base percentage, drawing 28 walks compared to 44 strikeouts. They weren’t the eye-popping numbers he produced in his junior season at Florida, batting .350 with a .497 on-base percentage and 21 homers. He earned SEC Player of the Year honors and was known as one of the most advanced college hitters in the draft. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound India believes he can use his minor league season as clear motivation for next year. He’s ranked as the No. 51 prospect by MLB.com, No. 4 in the Reds’ system. “They weren’t great (numbers),” India said. “That’s not who I am. But it’s a learning process. It was my first year and I struggled. Nothing to worry about. I’ll have a good year next year.” During the instructional league, India was making small adjustments with his swing in his last few days in Arizona. The right- handed hitter received instruction from Barry Larkin, Eric Davis and other coaches after batting practice sessions. “Just tweaking stuff with my swing a little bit,” India said. “Getting a little bit more reps. Infield-wise, I was working at short a lot. Just finding my footwork.” India primarily played third base during his two months in the minor leagues, though he made a few appearances at shortstop. Despite some offensive struggles during his first season, India was confident it would help him heading into next year. “I experienced some adversity,” India said. “That’s good to have. Coming into a new team and everything, it’s good to battle that stuff.” .

Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

A Rays pitcher hadn't thrown a complete game in nearly a year, since Drew Smyly's gem at Toronto on Aug. 22, 2014, the 154 games in between the longest running streak by an American League team. But the Rays (60-61) needed Archer's masterful performance for more than a historic significance, coming off back-to-back extra-inning walkoff losses that taxed their bullpen and the news that top lefty reliever Jake McGee needed knee surgery and would miss most of, and potentially all of, the rest of the season. Manager Kevin Cash praised Archer for responding to the situation with his 98 pitch, 11-strikeout masterpiece. "It was kind of like an ace knowing what we were faced up against with our bullpen being stretched out the last two nights and he kind of took the game on his shoulders and really delivered,'' Cash said.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach.

In total, the new player development system includes 179 teams across 17 leagues in 43 states and four provinces. Including the AZL and GCL, there are 209 teams across 19 leagues in 44 states and four provinces. That includes the 150 teams in the PDL and AZL/GCL along with the four partner leagues: the American Association, Atlantic League, Frontier League and Pioneer League. The long-time Triple-A structure of the International and Pacific Coast Leagues have been replaced by Triple-A East and Triple-A West. Triple-A East consists on 20 teams; all 14 from the International League, plus teams moving from the Pacific Coast League, the Southern League and the independent Atlantic League. Triple-A West is comprised of nine Pacific Coast League teams and one addition from the Atlantic League. To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. “Walk Humbly” How’s your ‘walk with the Lord’? One of the most cantankerous managers in baseball history was Earl Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles. He’ll always be remembered for his heated arguments with umpires; but he also got into it with his own players. There was a game in which one of his church-going outfielders named Pat Kelly struck out with the bases loaded; and when Earl Weaver angrily confronted Kelly, the outfielder calmly responded, “ Coach, I hope you walk with the Lord one day” to which Weaver snapped back, “ Pat, I hope you walk with the bases loaded one day!” * You’ve probably heard the phrase “walking with the Lord” – its frequently used to refer to our relationship with God.
