The Newsletter is produced by Kemnay & District Community Association for and by the people of Kemnay. It is distributed each month to approximately 2250 homes in and around Kemnay. If you would like anything included please note that the closing date for both articles and advertisements is 9am on the 23rd of the month. All inclusions to: Kemnay Newsletter, Kemnay Village Hall, 8 Aquithie Road, Kemnay AB51 5SS (The letterbox for the Village Hall is located half way down the right hand side of the Hall). Tel 01467 641120 (leave a message on answer phone) or email your inclusion to: [email protected] or [email protected] Once again we ask all organisers of events in Kemnay & District to give details for publication in the newsletter. If you have any queries about delivery, please ring 01467 642167 or email It is much better if events do not clash, for in a small community such as ours, these clashes can result in [email protected] divided loyalties and maybe a lower financial return for those who are raising funds for charity or their clubs expenditure. 1 DONALD McDONALD The stone immediately behind the one we discussed last month commemorates the family of Donald McDonald: ERECTED BY HIS FAMILY IN LOVING MEMORY OF DONALD MCDONALD WHO DIED AT PARKHILL KEMNAY 28 TH APRIL 1904 AGED 63 YEARS ALSO OUR MOTHER ANN MCDONALD WHO DIED 4 TH MAY 1910 AGED 69 YEARS. ALSO THEIR DAUGHTER HELEN BROWN BORN 25 TH MARCH 1875 DIED 28 TH SEPT 1916, MARGARET BORN 3 RD SEPT 1867 DIED 26 TH JULY 1937. Donald McDonald was born at Croy, Invernesshire around 1841. Whether it was as a result of the movement of folk from the highlands of in the mid 19 th century that he moved south, is unknown, but we pick up the story on 19 th June 1865 at 25 Gaelic Lane, Woodside, Aberdeen, his own recorded Pass Plus Registered residence, when he married Ann Brown, daughter of William Brown who originated from Ordiquhill, in Banffshire, and his wife Jane Farney. Tel: 01464 861099 By the early 1870s Donald and his family had settled in Parkhill in a house Mob: 07843 230416 overlooking the farm of Wellbush and Donald had found employment at the local quarries. The family eventually consisted of Donald and Anne along with five daughters and three sons and, according to the 1881 census the house had ‘2 rooms with windows’. The building was thatched and remained so into the 1920s when it received a makeover and the roof was covered with asbestos slates – the estate supplying the building materials and the tenant supplying all the necessary labour. As there was a small area of land attached to the house, the property was held on a nineteen year lease. When the lease was renewed in 1902 it transpired that Donald could not write ‘as he had never learned to do so’. Jane Farney McDonald, the eldest of Donald’s family married George Christie, who for a time carried on a cycle business from a shed in the wood beside the Come Along to Kemnay Church Centre bowling green in the village. They are both buried in the upper section of the Every Tues. & Thurs. from 9.30 – 11.30 a.m. churchyard. Susan the third daughter married and settled in Aberdeen. Jessie For Mums, Dads and Minders to get together married William Robertson, a quarry worker. Helen the youngest daughter married Charles Milne, a quarry worker, who was son of a former police for a coffee and a chat! constable in the village. Helen died in September 1916 aged 41 years. Charles Fun for Babies & Toddlers (Birth to 4 years) Milne eventually married her sister, Margaret, who was by then a widow, in 1934 Snacks provided – Everyone is Welcome! and settled in Kintore. Dear Editor We frequently look after a relatives dog which we walk from the centre of the village along Aquithie Road towards the ponds. We were appalled to find that there were no dog waste bins around the new pond. The only bin is when you cross the road at Dalmadilly into the car park. There are signs displayed “pick up your dog mess” but there are no bins to dispose of it. The first one on our return journey is in the village green, little wonder people don’t pick up and leave poo bags hanging on trees. Could I suggest one at each exit of the ponds and at least one somewhere along the pavement quarry/car store area. IA

Sir, On a regular basis I read of the problems of litter. This past weekend the local Scouts, as they do most years, held their annual camp in one of our fields and some of them bivouacked in our wood. While walking my dog today, I could not see even the smallest piece of paper or plastic anywhere, and this has been true of every one of their camps. Such a contrast to the regular sighting of single use plastic drink containers strewn around play parks and streets. All they left behind were their foot prints in the grass. Well done Kemnay Scouts! AH
