Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the managers/captains. 1. There are two Laws which place responsibility for the team's conduct firmly on the manager/captain. Responsibility of managers/captains The managers/captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. Player's conduct In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticising by word or action the decision of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player's manager/captain, and instruct the latter to take action. 4 2. Fair and unfair play According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. 3. The umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of: Time wasting Damaging the pitch Dangerous or unfair bowling Tampering with the ball Any other action that they consider to be unfair 4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for: Your opponents Your own captain The roles of the umpires The game's traditional values 5. It is against the Spirit of the Game: To dispute an umpire's decision by word, action or gesture To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance: (a) to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out (b) to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing (c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one's own side 6. Violence There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play. 5 7. Players Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution towards this. 2 OPEN POLICY The Junior League is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of its members. The League believes that it is important that members, coaches, administrators and parents carers or guardians associated with the league should at all times show respect and understanding for the safety and welfare of others. Therefore members are encouraged to be open at all times and to share any concerns or complaints that they may have about any aspect of the league with John Housley: League Chairman. 3 PRESIDENT’S FORWORD President’s Address – 63rd AGM 2012 What an eventful year it was with dreadful weather. This resulted in tremendous effort to get matches played. Well done players and all involved in cricket and cricket grounds. The Presentation evenings were a huge success and attendance was tremendous on both nights. This year the league has been elected as winners of the YCB OSCAS and I was invited to attend Lord’s to celebrate the efforts of all the people like you who work so hard. It was a wonderful occasion, especially as two of our own passed juniors were two of the main speakers – Michael Vaughan and Richard Kettleborough. Have a good night all Jack Bland President: Ben Jessop Sheffield + District Junior Cricket League 6 4 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Thank you to everyone for attending the 63rd AGM I am not going to mention the weather this year, as I am sure that it will be 1-2 years before we see the full effect it will have had on junior cricket within the league! I am sure we will have lost youngsters through not playing. I thank all the managers/ coaches for all their hard work in getting as many fixtures played. Thanks must also go to the result secretaries, who had to try and keep abreast of all the rearrangements. We must look at ways in which rearrangements of fixtures are recorded. The awards evenings shows just how the league is growing, we must all work together to find ways of administrating the coaching/playing of cricket. To make sure that the young cricketers get the best opportunity of developing to their true potential. The committee are always looking at ways to maximise the time that we have to get as much cricket played at all age groups. The representative sides are progressing in the right direction, we may not have achieved the achievements as in 2011 but the structure we have in place is giving them the best opportunity to achieve greater things! For this to carry on we MUST get the managers and assistants in place, It must come from the clubs so please if you know of any coach/manager who may be interested please let me know!! We have two new cups for batting and bowling for the U13 age group which have been donated by the family of the late Harry Wastnidge. Harry was junior coach at Frecheville cricket club, he captained the 2nd eleven. In 1967 he was the Joe Lumb manager, which won the Joe Lumb Trophy for Sheffield against Doncaster. He was instrumental in getting youngsters to develop into good senior players. Finally thanks must go to all the committee who all give up their time to help junior cricket in this area. A big thank you to Michelle our secretary, who keeps all of us on the committee on our toes especially me! News & Views From St Mary’s Church Ecclesfield Church Magazine September 2020 www.stmarysecclesfield.com Price 60p First Words We enter September and the start of Autumn with things still very much restricted by the ongoing global pandemic. Many of us have had our holidays cancelled and our lives are still not what we would want them to be. But things are slowly beginning to open-up again. We are able to open Church for worship every Sunday at 10am and Thursday at 9.30 am. Most weeks we open Church for private prayer on Wednesdays at 3pm. I am very grateful to the wardens and Peter Lonsborough for all that they have done to enable us to open safely. We have been able to have some singing in Church on Sundays, and I hope that it won’t be too long before we can all sing hymns and worship songs together. Thanks to those who have contributed to the worship on these past weeks. Look out for announcements regarding worship on Sunday evenings. Small weddings can take place again, and there are a few weddings booked in for October and December, it is good to welcome couples who have come to hear their banns called on Sunday mornings. • On Monday 7th September the clock-repairers will be the tower replacing the broken pane of glass on the clock-face. • The Gatty Trustees will be meeting at 7pm on Monday 7th September in the Gatty Hall, • On Tuesday 8th September at 1pm we will be holding a meeting of the PCC in Church.

  • Leg Before Wicket Douglas Miller Starts to Look at the Most Controversial Form of Dismissal
Leg Before Wicket Douglas Miller starts to look at the most controversial form of dismissal Of the 40 wickets that fell in the match between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan at Cheltenham that ended on 1st August 2010 as many as 18 of the victims were dismissed lbw. Was this, I wondered, a possible world record? Asking Philip Bailey to interrogate the files of Cricket Archive, I discovered that it was not: back in 1953/54 a match between Patiala and Delhi had seen 19 batsmen lose their wickets in this way. However, until the start of the 2010 season the record in English first-class cricket had stood at 17, but, barely credibly, Cheltenham had provided the third instance of a match with 18 lbws in the course of the summer. Gloucestershire had already been involved in one of these, against Sussex at Bristol, while the third occasion was the Sussex-Middlesex match at Hove. Was this startling statistic for 2010 an indication that leg before decisions are more freely given nowadays? It seemed to correlate with an impression that modern technology has given umpires a better feel for when a ball is likely to hit the wicket and that the days when batsmen could push forward and feel safe were now over. I determined to dig deeper and examine trends over time. This article confines itself to matches played in the County Championship since World War I. I propose looking at Tests in a future issue. The table below shows how the incidence of lbw dismissals has fluctuated over time.
