9 MILE WALK FROM STEETON & SILSDEN TO HOCKNEY’S SALTAIRE After a brief stint along a pavement we will soon leave the A6034 behind and follow the Millennium Way up to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath from there it is an easy stroll either on the level or downhill all the way to Saltaire. The route takes in some pleasant scenery and allows you to appreciate the benefits of a slower pace of life – with canal barges chugging past; anglers sat patiently waiting for a fish to bite and ducks and swans snoozing or paddling whilst remaining hopeful titbits will be thrown their way. We also take in the impressive engineering feat of Bingley’s Five Rise Locks.

We will stop for lunch at the Fisherman’s Inn: www.thefishermansinn.com aiming to arrive at about 1pm. If you would rather not stop for lunch you can keep on following the tow path into Saltaire (only a couple of miles further on).

After lunch the walk continues to Saltaire where you can catch one of the regular trains back to Steeton and Silsden, Leeds or Bradford. Alternatively you could spend a bit of time taking in the delights of Salts Mill to view pictures from David Hockney, browse the shops (including an excellent book shop) or have further refreshments.

Arrival & start time Meet up at the entrance to Steeton and Silsden Railway Station (platform 2) at 10.10am with the aim to set off at 10:20am. Address: Station Road, Steeton, West Yorkshire, BD20 6RY

Getting there Train from Leeds at 9.26am arrives at Steeton and Silsden at 9:55am. Train from Bradford Foster Square at 9:41am arrives at Steeton and Silsden at 10:06am. There’s a car park at Steeton and Silsden with 143 spaces.

To join us Please e-mail me (Vince Mihill) at [email protected] or text me at 07804 191189 by Thursday 5 October. When you do, please let me know whether you would like to have lunch at the Fisherman’s Inn and I will look into booking a table. 26 Wine Club

THE WINES OF CADIZ – George McPadden Friday 13th October When we think of wine and Cadiz, people will often be puzzled and either think it doesn’t have any notable wines or, those with a little more knowledge will nod only to the Sherry wines produced in the most south westerly province of Andalucia, for it is here around Jerez and San Lucar de Barameda that the finest sherries are made. Until recently it was indeed the case that apart from Sherry most other wines were only made in small quantities for personal and family consumption, but there are a growing number of producers, adopting modern techniques and making new world type wines here. If you want to sample a range of wines from the area then come along to this event and try, not just Sherry with a modern twist, but white and red wines and more besides. You will even have an insight into some of the stories of the producers, neighbours’ recommendations and what Susan and I drink when we are there, be that good value every day wines or if we want to splash out a little more on something special. You’ll be surprised and pleased… I hope!

Chez Vin event in Otley on Friday 20th October Chez Vin will be holding their autumn wine tasting festive at Otley Rugby Club on Friday 20th October, between 17:30 – 21:30. Price for HASSRA members will be £6.25 and £12.50 for non-members. If you are interested in attending, or want further details contact Jonathan Kirkland at [email protected] . Please note if you book a ticket for this event and you can’t make you need to let the wine club know ASAP as we will try to get a refund, or re-allocate ticket, but if we can’t do this we will still have to charge you for this event. Some more details of the event can be found in the following link http://www.chezvin.co.uk/events

Latitude Spirit Tasting Event - Friday 17 November 19:00 - 21:00 Latitude will be holding a spirit tasting session on Friday 17 November between 19:00 – 21:00 at Leeds Corn Exchange. Price for HASSRA members will be £12.50 and for non-members £25.00. If you are interested in attending, or want further details contact Roy Jones on [email protected] Please note if you book a ticket for this event and you can’t make you need to let the wine club know ASAP as we will try to get a refund, or re-allocate ticket, but if we can’t do this we will still have to charge you for this event. Some more details of the event can be found in the following link http://www.latitudewine.co.uk/magento/shop/tasting-events/latitude-wine-spirit-spectacular-2017.html

Halloween Wines from Dracula Cellars – Thursday 26th October TBC Ovidiu from Romanian wines will be presenting a selection of Romanian wines from the Dracula cellars label. The wine club thought this would be a good way to celebrate Halloween. Romanian wines might not be as well known in the wine world as other countries/regions, but we did sample a range of wines from this country earlier this year and we were pleasantly surprised at their quality, so pop along if you fancy something different. The actually date is TBC as Ovidu may be double booked, so contact Roy Jones at [email protected] if you are interested in attending. 28 Golf Society

CELTIC MANOR RESORT HOTEL IS A 5* RESORT

31 Celtic Manor The Resort Hotel With its soaring atrium, distinctive design and informal traditional luxury, the five-star Resort Hotel provides space to unwind and put back a little of what life takes out. Roman Road Course The very first of the Resort’s courses, Roman Road opened in 1995 and was ranked ‘the top inland course in Wales’ by Golf Monthly Magazine. This par 70 course overlooks the Severn Estuary with views across to Somerset and Devon. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, it is named after the old Via Julia Roman highway that ran through its fairways. Venue for the 2015 Wales Senior Open and bordered by woodland, this challenging course features some long open fairways but also a number of twists and turns through trees and across streams. Montgomerie Course Offering a spectacular par 69 challenge, the legendary Colin Montgomerie has called on all his Ryder Cup experience to create a course with many exciting tests of strategy. Montgomerie has also drawn on his roots in Scottish links golf to create a traditional feel enhanced by deep and penal pot bunkers. Spectacular views abound with dramatic tee shots over valleys and breathtaking downhill shots. It was the stage for the 2015 Wales Senior Open, the opening event of the EuroPro Tour season. Twenty Ten Course Built to stage the 2010 Ryder Cup, the first course to be built specifically for golf’s greatest team tournament, it measures a robust 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of 71. With water hazards on half of its holes, the course has six signature holes and presents many more memorable tests and risk-and-reward dilemmas. One of the features of the spectacular course is its variety with many of the earlier holes having a links-like feel with long rough and greenside swales, before the middle section reveals the full extent of the lake-lined challenge. A tough finishing stretch culminates in a real sting in the tail at the 18th.

RAMSIDE HALL Offering the perfect blend of traditional features, luxury accommodation and first-class service, Ramside Hall is the ideal setting for a break in County Durham.

Situated on the outskirts of Durham City, the hotel boasts 127 luxurious bedrooms and suites, each offering its own unique charm with stunning views across 350 acres of beautiful private grounds. Once you’ve relaxed into your surroundings, our luxury spa provides the ideal opportunity to unwind, with one of the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pools, a state-of-the-art gym and a huge range of specialist treatments on offer.

PRINCE BISHOPS COURSE The par 72 course measures 6,851 yards from its championship tees and has views of world famous Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration for Ramside’s second course – The Cathedral Course opened in September 2014. The Prince Bishops' course is named after the warrior clergymen who ruled over the lawless North from Durham Castle after the Norman Conquest in the 11th Century. The course has spirit of adventure and features 16 water hazards, reachable par 5’s, driveable par 4’s, and short holes that demand shot-making skills from wedge to woods.

Designer Jonathan Gaunt laid out a golf course that delivers risk and reward golf at its best. Water comes into play on 10 holes and there are nine doglegs on the card which demand good strategy and the ability to move the both ways if you are to score at your lowest.

The course is fair. The fairways are wide and generous and there is a conservative option available on every hole so that any standard of golfer can enjoy Ramside’s challenge.

CATHEDRAL COURSE The Cathedral Course has been built on rolling countryside between the villages of Belmont and Pittington with breath-taking natural features including ridges, becks and valleys.

The course extends out over a broad hilltop with views of Durham Cathedral and as far afield as the Angel of the North in Gateshead, before dropping down into a valley and rising up again to return to the parkland estate where its closing holes end back at the clubhouse and hotel.

The middle holes are laid out across a high plateau, previously called ‘Hilltop Farm’ - with wide-open skies and 360 degree views - then drop down into a striking valley with dramatic elevation changes, mature trees, steep banksides and a coursing beck.

Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner.’ The downhill par-three 12th bears an uncanny resemblance to its famous counterpart in Georgia but instead of Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck stands guard at the front of the green.

35 Tee-Time Treat!

Leeds-based HASSRA Leeds Golf Society ‘putt’ their skills to the test as they raise a huge total in aid of Kirkwood Hospice

Local fundraiser and golf-enthusiast, Paul Bentley, made a recent visit to Kirkwood, the Hospice in Dalton, to present a generous cheque for the amount of £1,426 on behalf of the HASSRA Leeds Golf Society.

Following a two year stint as Captain of the Society, the money presented by Paul represents the proceeds of various fundraising events held during this time, in aid of the society’s chosen of the Year, Kirkwood Hospice.

Having recently completed this period of captaincy, it was the perfect opportunity for Paul to make a visit to the Hospice and present the funds raised.

After seeing his Grandmother and other family members access the Hospice’s services, local Mirfield man, Paul, made the decision to make Kirkwood chosen Charity of the Year for the Society and was more than happy to support a local cause.

Together with friends of the Hassra Leeds Golf Society, the Kirklees fundraiser got his thinking cap on as how best to raise as much as possible for Kirkwood Hospice.

Made up from raffles, bets on the outcome of the game and generous contributions from Society Members themselves, an incredible total was raised over the two years. As put simply by Paul, “golfers are very generous.”

In a recent visit, Paul was delighted to present the funds to Kirkwood Nurse, Anna Marie Wilkinson, who accepted on behalf of the Hospice. After a tour around the beautiful and award-winning Hospice gardens, Paul commented that he knew the money would be put to good use.

38 HASSRA Leeds Craft Club Yarndale Review

I set off for Yarndale on Sunday We went for a coffee and sat outside morning with a full purse, a few chatting to a couple of elderly men ideas about what I was looking for from Maine who were holidaying and some knitting to keep me nearby. Their wives were both ‘fibre occupied en route. artists’ and had apparently been gone for some time….. Suddenly several At Skipton station I transferred to an large sheep and a 2 legged sheepdog old fashioned red double decker bus. appeared on the path in front of us. Before long we were at Yarndale and The sheep were quite badly behaved a wonderful array of woolliness was and the dog was more interested in beckoning me in. cocking its leg against every tree it I began my first pass of the stalls, passed than in controlling the sheep. determined not to be tempted yet and just interesting stalls to return to on Then it was back inside for a second the programme. I didn’t reach for my wander round. I bought some more purse for at least 15 minutes. I couldn’t yarn and felting risk the bargain basket yarn that was materials but perfect for a planned project being only overspent sold by the time I came back for my my original second pass! budget by £5. And of course I relented again when I got to a felting there was more stall festooned with gorgeous needle knitting to be felted pictures and supplies. I had a done on the Eureka moment about how I could way home. solve all those Christmas present conundrums by making personalised gifts. I left the stall with a bag full of needle-felting supplies and a lighter purse!

I had a quiet word with myself about self-discipline and moved on. At the Oxfam ‘Yarn Amnesty’ stall I felt quite virtuous handing over my small bag of surplus yarn. I’d just made it all the way round when my friend texted to say she was on the red bus. So I sat and knitted a few more rows until she arrived.

58 BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the un discounted "non member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
