spectful,” she said. After a large group of 25 students came in, the decision was made to not let anyone else attend. Flory said at least 50 cars were turned away. Signs, candles and flowers adorned a tree where the crash took place. Tyler Daniels was a passenger in a BMW that broke completely in two after it hit the tree at high speed, said Lt. Kim Montes, public affairs officer for the Florida Highway Patrol. “Speed definitely played a factor,” Montes said, noting that the BMW had lost control on a nearby curve. The accident hap- pened about 10:30 p.m. heading south toward Continental and Ronald Reagan boulevards. Daniels died at the scene, Florida troopers said. The uniden- tified 21-year-old driver remained in critical condition at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford on Tuesday, Montes said. A 16-year-old passenger in the backseat was released from the hospital. “The crash split the car completely in two,” Montes said. Two tow trucks were called to remove the car. “They were all friends is what the homicide investigator told me,” Montes said. The crash is still under investigation. On a tree at the crash site are two handmade yellow signs. The top one says: “In loving memory, Tyler Logan Daniels, Sunrise 8-17-2000-Sunset 7-28-2020. You will be missed. We’ll meet again.” The bottom sign had a warn- ing for others: “PLEASE DRIVE SAFE!” Lt. Col. Skip Barth has taught JROTC with Daniels’ father Craig at Lake Mary High School for years. Tyler graduated two years ago. Barth said Tyler was like a baseball sta- tistics encyclopedia. Tyler loved the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, and the Reds dedicated their Aug. 3 game to Tyler, Barth said. Tyler “He was a great kid with a great heart,” Daniels Barth said. “He loved sports and was very energetic.” Barth said he used to joke that he could- n’t remember what he ate for breakfast, but Tyler knew the AAA batting average of some Reds’ prospect player. Barth helped set up the celebration of life service at the high school. He said that just days before the accident, Tyler had stepped up at his church after a call to come forward. The young man told the pastor that he hadn’t planned on doing that, but he felt called. He was to soon start a Church boot camp. Tyler was a young man discovering his way in life, Barth said. He had a long relationship with his girlfriend. “He seemed like he was really happy,” Barth recalled. He was a hard worker at his job where his boss really liked him, and he was learning a lot. “When Tyler said he was going to do something, he really put the time and effort into it,” Barth said, recalling the young man’s commitment to JROTC at Lake Mary High School. When Tyler graduated, Barth said he was a cadet master chief. At Saturday’s memorial, they had a little stand with his Navy dress blue jacket and rank insignia, among other items. Tyler was also an organ donor, Barth said, and his heart and eyes were donated immediately. “He saved someone else,” Barth said. “A lot of people his age might not think a lot about that.” Tyler’s dad, Craig, talked at the memorial about plans to take his son to see the Reds play in their pandemic shortened season. “He said he wished he’d had one more day,” Barth recalled his colleague saying. “I’d want to be sitting there in that stadi- um because he loved it.”
