  • Cultural Politics of Hornbill Festival, Nagaland
Prohibition and Naga Cultural Identity: Cultural Politics of Hornbill Festival, Nagaland Theyiesinuo Keditsu Abstract This paper explores the conflict between two important markers of Naga cultural identity namely ethnic identity and Christian identity, brought about by the observance of the Hornbill Festival in Kohima, Nagaland. In particular, it examines the ways in which the hegemony of the church via the long-standing prohibition of alcohol is contested in the space of Kisama, the venue for the Hornbill festival and during week to ten day long celebration of the festival. It proposes that by making these contestations possible, the Hornbill festival has given rise to new possibilities for the articulation of Naga cultural identity. Keywords: Naga cultural identity, Ethnic identity, Christian identity, Prohibition, Hornbill Festival The Hornbill Festival was created and implemented by the Government of Nagaland in 2000. The first staging of the Hornbill Festival occurred in the Kohima Local Ground, which is situated in the heart of Kohima Town. In 2003, it was moved to its now permanent location, at Kisama, a heritage village constructed as the venue for this festival. It is held on the first week of December of every year. Volume 2. Issue 2. 2014 22 URL: http://subversions.tiss.edu/ This paper is based on fieldwork carried out between 2008 to 2011 in Kohima, Nagaland, particularly during the first week of December when the Hornbill festival is held. Data was collected through qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews, focus group discussion and participant observation. It is also partly a product of my own negotiations of my ethnic identity as an Angami Naga and as a practising Baptist and therefore member of the Baptist Church of Nagaland.

This hypothesis-generating study used a cognitive behavioral approach and Brunswik’s lens model for subjective risk parameters across eight countries. In Germany, Poland, Israel, the United States, Brazil, India, Malaysia, and Australia, 812 field interviews took place with a uniform set of 37 questions about weather interest, media access, elementary meteorological knowledge, weather fear, preparedness, loss due to weather, and sociodemography. The local randomized quota samples were strictly tested for sample errors; however, they cannot be considered representative for individual countries due to sample size and methodology.

  • Rediscovery of Plagiochilion Mayebarae S. Hatt
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by EKE Repository of Publications REDISCOVERY OF PLAGIOCHILION MAYEBARAE S. HATT. FROM NAGALAND, INDIA Kazhuhrii Eshuo Department of Botany, Nagaland University, Hqs: Lumami-798 627, Nagaland-India. [email protected] Keywords: Plagiochilion mayebarae, Plagiochilaceae, rediscovery, Hepaticae, Nagaland Abstract: Plagiochilion mayebarae S. Hatt. has been described along with mature sporophytes for the first time from Nagaland state. This taxon has been previously reported from Sikkim Himalaya (Inoue, 1964). Therefore, the present investigation shows the extension of distributional range from Sikkim to Naga- land state (rediscovered after a gap of 49 years). Hand drawing illustrations have been provided for its identification. Introduction Plagiochilion S. Hatt. belonging to the family Plagiochilaceae was seg- regated from the genus Plagiochila by Hattori (1947). The genus Plagi- ochilion S. Hatt, was later accepted by Inoue (1958) and Schuster (1959). In India, the genus Plagiochilion is poorly understood and so far no inten- sive work has been done on this taxon. The genus Plagiochilion are dis- tinct from the genus Plagiochila in having opposite and connate leaves, rhizoids are fasciculate and restricted to near the postical of leaves, and the branching of stem is predominantly intercalary and postical (Inoue, 1964). Inoue (1964) has described the species P. mayebarae S. Hatt. and reported the occurrence of the taxa from Sikkim Himalaya from Kurseong, Nagkli, Singalelak, Jongli and Senchal. Therefore, the present investigation on the genus Plagiochilion sporophytes have been described for the first time and the occurrence of the genus Plagiochilion is an un- 23 known hitherto to the North East Indian Sub-Himalayan region.
