HIGHLIGHTS

 The epidemiological situation in Grand’ Anse Department is the most critical issue, including malnutrition cases.  Critical to continue the improvement of quality of care, treatment, and WaSH in cholera treatment facilities. Furthermore, it is indispensable to rehabilitate 30 ambulatory nutrition posts in both and Grand’ Anse Departments.  In anticipation of final election results on December 29, all departmental hospitals in the country and strategic health centers in Sud and Grand’ Anse have been provided with medicines and supplies.  Next Health Group meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at PAHO/WHO and will focus on the epidemiological situation of the affected area.

HAITI

SITUATION OVERVIEW: GRAND’ ANSE DEPARTMENT  Corail CTC has been evaluated for the first time and improvements are needed.  Increase in acute diarrhea cases in Fond Bayard, Carrefour Charles commune.  Malaria cases continue to increase in the department.  No cases of diphtheria registered from December 5-11.  Ongoing WaSH and care and treatment trainings for CTC personnel by PAHO/WHO and DSGA.  Malnutrition assessments were carried out by UNICEF and FONDEF on 5,760 children in the communes of Dame Marie, Les Irois and Anse d’Hainault. 12 cases of kwashiorkor (acute severe protein-energy malnutrition), 136 cases of acute severe malnutrition and 319 cases of moderate acute malnutrition were found. DSGA is trying to establish 3 nutritional stabilization units with the support of partners like UNICEF, MdM and FONDEF in Saint Antoine Hospital, Dame Marie Health Center, and Haiti Health Foundation in Jérémie.

 Training on cholera care and treatment for malnourished children will be organized by PAHO/WHO and DSGA.

SUD DEPARTMENT  Cavaillon CTC which was run by IMC has been evaluated and set up.  Ongoing WaSH and care and treatment trainings for CTC personnel by PAHO/WHO and DSS.  Cholera cases are decreasing in the department.  , Port Salut and Camp-Perrin CTCs have been evaluated.

RESPONSE: MSPP  Malaria treatment and rapid tests are available for partners in health directorates in Sud and Grand’ Anse.

PAHO/WHO  A log book to follow up on CTC evaluations will be set up in each cholera treatment center in Sud and Grand’ Anse.  Continues CTC quality evaluations and tracking of health center rehabilitation activities by partners in Sud and Grand’ Anse.  Mosquito nets will be distributed for all hospital beds in Sud and Grand’ Anse.  All departmental hospitals in the country and strategic health centers in Sud and Grand’ Anse have been provided with medicines and supplies in anticipation of final election results on December 29.

NEEDS:  Continue to improve the quality of care and treatment and WaSH in cholera treatment facilities.  Rehabilitate 30 ambulatory nutrition treatment posts in Sud and Grand’ Anse to treat 40,000 cases of malnutrition estimated in the area.

PARTNER ACTIONS:  Due to security situations that might arise from the announcement of final results of presidential elections, some NGOs will limit their interventions starting December 29. However, they will have staff on call, if necessary.
