  • By Brendan Garrity Hate Mail. Death Threats. Labeled As “The Most Hated
By Brendan Garrity Hate mail. Death threats. Labeled as “the most hated man in sports.” Skip Bayless has seen it all. The hatred may come with the territory. And he may bring it upon himself with his nonsensical and preposterous claims. But animosity has had a strong presence in Bayless’ life dating back to his childhood days. He doesn’t shy from it either, though. A simple YouTube search of Bayless’ name is sure to bring up a lengthy list of heated arguments between the outspoken analyst and professional athletes. What the world doesn’t understand, though, is the background that has shaped Bayless and led to his persona seen on-air. A man with a childhood filled with abuse. A man disconnected from his only two siblings. A man who eats the same damn thing for lunch and dinner five days a week. Bayless is quite an enigma. The 61-year-old’s rigorous exercise schedule, which features two daily workouts, could put most 20-year-olds to shame. His dietary habits are bizarre as well. Bayless orders five days worth of chicken and broccoli from his favorite Chinese restaurant each Monday to get him through a week’s worth of dinners, and five sandwiches from a deli in Manhattan for a week’s lunches. There are few people in this world more dedicated to their work than Bayless. His girlfriend, Ernestine Sclafani, told the Washington Post that Bayless once admitted, “You will never be more important than my job.” From praising Tim Tebow to bashing LeBron James, his theories have driven sports fans insane for years.

Scene on Radio Domination (MEN, Part 11) http://www.sceneonradio.org/episode-57-domination-men-part-11/ Jim Rome, The Jim Rome Show: Grandpa Joe, I mean, that guy’s the worst. He’s a bad guy, Joe. This guy lays in bed all day long in his pajamas, while his old lady’s working, like, she’s triple-shifting at the laundromat. And then the second the kid comes home with a Golden Ticket, he’s right out of bed. All of a sudden the old guy is like, hits his head on the ceiling getting out of bed. He’s dancing around, moonwalking. John Biewen: You may have guessed that’s a clip from talk radio. You may not have surmised it’s from a radio show devoted to sports. It’s a guy named Jim Rome, one of the nation’s most popular sports talk radio hosts. Not talking sports at the moment but instead going off on a fictional character from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Celeste Headlee: When guys talk on sports radio shows – and let’s face it, most of the hosts and callers on sports radio are men – they mostly talk about sports. Who’s gonna win the championship, which guy should the coach put in at quarterback. But far more interesting, for our purposes on this podcast, are the times when people on sports talk radio talk about how to be a man. As it turns out, they talk about that a lot. 1 John Biewen: Directly and indirectly, ironically and seriously, how to be an admirable guy in these complicated times.

  • An Analysis of National Football League Fandom and Its Promotion of Conservative Cultural Ideals About Race, Religion, and Gender
AN ANALYSIS OF NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE FANDOM AND ITS PROMOTION OF CONSERVATIVE CULTURAL IDEALS ABOUT RACE, RELIGION, AND GENDER Mackenzie Ryan A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Dr. Marilyn Motz, Advisor Dr. Esther Clinton © 2012 Mackenzie Ryan All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Marilyn Motz, Ph.D, Advisor In this thesis I address three specific questions that relate to the current state of NFL fandom. To what extent do religion, race, and gender influence various aspects of NFL fandom? How do these issues reflect the dominant culture and major demographics of NFL fans (white and male)? Finally, what implications do my findings have for sports culture, fandom, and popular culture as a whole? To answer these questions, I provide three different case studies of NFL fan activities such as fantasy football, issues of gender, and religious and social ideals which show how NFL fandom reflects a very conservative view of race, gender, and religion that in particular mirrors and supports the conservative backlash that has occurred since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009. For this thesis I examined NFL fan behavior and fan rhetoric on websites and blogs devoted to NFL fandom. In Chapter One, I focus on fantasy football, a popular activity among NFL fans. I examine the practices of fantasy football participants and how NFL players, particularly non-white players, are commodified by fans that play fantasy football. In Chapter Two, I analyze how women are portrayed by and situated within NFL fandom.
