Emc Replication Manager EMC REPLICATION MANAGER Industry-leading, application-centric replica management for EMC point-in-time replication technology in physical and virtual environments REPLICATION MAKES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE ESSENTIALS The growth of data is driving longer backup and recovery windows. Many other business • Creates and manages application- processes, such as refreshing a reporting instance, generating copies of data for testing, consistent replicas for backup accelera- and recovering from a disaster are taking much longer. The decreasing cost of disk storage tion, instant restore and data repurposing, such as development/test, makes use of replication technologies more attractive for enabling realtime backup and with little to no impact on production recovery. Application images can instantly be transferred between servers or between sites. • Streamlines operations via a common These are a few of the reasons why the use of replication is becoming more popular every user interface for simplified replica day. To help you make the most of data replication, EMC offers a management solution that management creates simple and automated processes for leveraging point-in-time replicas. The processes • Point-and-click, wizard-driven manage- developed can involve multiple servers, applications, storage arrays, and sites. This power- ment interface for EMC clone and snap ful solution is EMC® Replication Manager, which when used in conjunction with EMC Time- products enables ease of use Finder™™, EMC SnapView™, EMC SnapSure™, EMC SAN Copy™, EMC Celerra Replicator™, and • Automates the discovery of storage arrays, EMC RecoverPoint family enables you to share, protect, and manage your data throughout applications, replication technologies, and hosts in the environment your environment with ease. • Saves valuable time by automating the scheduling, mounting, dismounting, and REPLICATE AND ACCELERATE expiration of EMC replicas IT infrastructure management is becoming increasingly complex. The need for constant • Facilitates self-sufficiency through user information availability, multi-terabyte databases, and the ability to manage and support accounts with varying privileges complex infrastructures are just a few of the challenges you face every day. Replication • Ideal for physical and virtual environ- Manager enables you to reduce complexity, provide better IT support for the business, ments such as VMware and Hyper-V and improve the flow of information throughout your enterprise. With Replication Manager, discovery of the environment is automated, allowing you to easily schedule replications. With its built-in intelligence, Replication Manager places applications in the proper state for application-consistent replicas which can be mounted to alternate hosts for accelerated backups, instant restore, development/test, or moving data to lower-cost storage. D A T A S H E E T SIMPLIFY AND AUTOMATE EMC Replication Manager eliminates most scripting and manual mapping of filesystems and applications to storage and replaces them with an intuitive point-and-click interface, pull-down menus, and wizards. It looks and feels like many familiar web-enabled applica- tions. Because of this simplicity and the policy-based management this solution imple- ments, Replication Manager functions can be initiated and used by the IT staff responsible for applications and not necessarily by storage or replication experts. Multiple user roles with varying privileges enable self-sufficiency within the organization. This enables much more productive use of an organization’s limited resources to respond to all the critical tasks that add value to a business. Replication Manager’s Java-based management console can be operated from a local This screen shows the properties of a backup job terminal or securely over the Internet. for Exchange using SnapView clones with a replication retention count of 2. Until it’s fixed, employees and customers cannot access information necessary to transact business, resulting in lost revenue and possible damage to your business reputation. But twenty minutes later, the database is repaired and you’re back in bed resting peacefully. Only EMC provides the ability to discover applications and schedule, automate, mount, and restore your point-in-time replicas from a simple-to-use interface. EMC Replication Manager reduces resources needed to manage complex replication tasks. Sound impossible? Not with EMC Replication Manager. Your database administrator can simply log in from home to identify the problem. Using the Replication Manager catalog, he or she has easy access to the last scheduled replica of the production database. (Replication Manager enables the scheduling of disk-based backups of selected filesystems and data- bases as often as your business demands.) Then, the database administrator uses the Repli- cation Manager auto-mount facility to mount the required copy of the database to a test machine and bring up the database immediately. Now your administrator can probe the database and figure out which database to restore. The Replication Manager GUI is then used to restore the replica back onto the production system. At no time does the database administrator need to have the storage administrator create a replication copy or require a systems administrator to mount the copy to or from the test machine. The database administrator can complete this procedure without the knowl- edge of the operating system, file system, or replication software’s command-line interface and scripting language. Replication Manager allows the database administrator to be self- reliant by providing a level of application, operating system, file system, storage, and repli- cation software transparency. OR YOU COULD USE TAPE-BASED BACKUP In a traditional tape-based backup/restore procedure, databases being backed up are serially transferred to tape. A tape management system is not tracking logical information that is still replicated on disk and recovery must be from tape, increasing the recovery time and interrupting your business in the process. In addition, tape-based backup is in a propri- etary format and the media is slow to mount and dismount. And most importantly, your database is subject to mishandling and delays, potentially extending exposure to loss of business and customer satisfaction. THE CHOICE IS YOURS EMC Replication Manager relies upon disk-based replicas (snap, clone, or mirror copies) as the foundation of the recovery operation. Replicas can now be used for backup accelera- tion and restoration of tablespaces and filesystems, or for simplifying and automating data refreshes in development testing, quality assurance, and reporting cycles. With Replication Manager, you can leverage fewer people for more complex tasks, such as replication, enhancing the value of your IT infrastructure. Availability is also improved because the complexity of deploying and managing replications and the subsequent recov- ery from them is reduced significantly. For example, a database administrator can validate the integrity of a database or create a new reporting copy of the database for users. Your systems administrators can create a gold copy of your production database as a quick and easy way to create a backup that can be used if there is a problem with an upgrade/ patch or corruption in the database. Replication Manager enables you to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your storage environment by easily setting up activities for moving information between different media types, such as high-performance disks, high- capacity lower-cost disks, and tape.
