Focus: Updates on International Year of Youth

In preparation for the International Year of Youth, the UN system and Member States are currently undertaking a range of initiatives. The following provides a brief update.

UNITED NATIONS MEMBER STATES In its resolution 64/134 (December 2009), which proclaimed the year commencing 12 August 2010 as the International Year of Youth, the UN General Assembly decided:

“to organize under the auspices of the United Nations a world youth conference as the highlight of the Year” and invited “the President of the General Assembly to conduct open-ended informal consultations with Member States with a view to determining the modalities of the conference, which is to be funded by voluntary contributions.”

In April 2010, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of agreed to serve as Facilitator for

the consultations on the organization of the conference which will be held in 2011. Consultations began in May 2010 with an offer by the Government of Tunisia to host the conference in mid-July 2011. Negotiations are on-going at this time and a resolution on the modalities of the conference, including the exact dates and venue, is expected before the launch of the Year.

UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM

Official Slogan The official slogan for the International Year of Youth (IYY) is: Our Year. Our Voice. The slogan evolved following a public consultation on the IYY Facebook page. Nearly 500 suggestions were received from youth around the world.

Official Logo The official logo for IYY will be available to download and attach onto promotional materials for events organized in celebration of the Year. Downloading the logo will be at no cost and available once the liability waiver has been signed and submitted to the UN Programme on Youth (UNPY). The guidelines for use are awaiting approval at this time but are expected soon. The logo will be a variation of the image in this Feature’s heading and be available in all six official languages of the United Nations.

Activities Kit The UNPY is currently developing, in conjunction with an international youth-focused organization, an Activities Kit which will provide practical guidance to young people organizing activities to promote and celebrate the Year. The Kit will include suggestions on types of events (including low-cost ideas), organizing supporters, fundraising, and engaging the media to raise awareness.

Online calendar of events for IYY The UNPY will host an online calendar of events on its website to promote youth-led and youth-focused activities in commemoration of IYY. Organizers are invited to post information about their event and include a link to a website for additional information. At the time of submission, organizers should provide a brief description of the event and, following the event, submit a brief note on the outcome. The aim of the calendar is to provide a central, public location for youth to share information about their events and to learn about what activities are taking place around the world. The calendar will be launched in the near future and announced on the IYY website (www.social.un.org/youthyear) and Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/UNyouth and www.facebook.com/UNyouthyear).

Global Launch at United Nations Headquarters – 12 August 2010 The Global Launch Event of the International Year of Youth at United Nations Headquarters will demonstrate Member States and the UN system’s commitment to youth development as well as provide a forum to garner media attention and raise awareness for the Year. The event is an inter-agency initiative and it will feature contributions from a range of UN entities. In addition to the event in New York, UN celebrations will take place in other UN duty stations highlighting regional and local specificities.

Youth organizations, government offices, civil society, etc. are all encouraged to organize launch events on 12 August 2010 and are requested to inform the UN Programme on Youth by email at [email protected].

Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development The United Nations Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development is coordinating the activities of the UN system for the International Year of Youth, with the UNPY leading this effort. The Network works to increase the effectiveness of the UN’s work in youth development by strengthening collaboration and exchange among all UN entities working on youth.

Members of the Network adopted the UN Framework Approach for the International Year of Youth in HOME February 2010 to provide a concrete framework for collective efforts and to set the strategic objectives for BACK TO TOP the Year. The three key areas of the Framework focus on increasing (i) commitment and investment in youth; (ii) youth participation and partnerships; and (iii) inter-cultural understanding among youth. In each of these areas, the Framework provides specific actions essential to implement the objectives, and establishing collaborative partnerships with young people is emphasized as fundamental. The progress achieved during the Year will lay the foundation for further work in youth development, including the implementation of the World Programme of Action for Youth and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The Framework has been disseminated to the UN system, including to Regional Commissions and Country Teams, and is available at: http://social.un.org/youthyear/unapproach.shtml. Organizations celebrating IYY are invited to use the Framework to guide their activities.

For future updates and announcements, please be sure to join our Facebook pages and regularly visit our website. In addition to providing information to youth, the UNPY also holds monthly online consultations on a new topic every month. To participate, please follow the link available on the IYY Facebook page.
