From the Rector …

Last Sunday, we were all asked to think about those situa- tions in our lives that might call for reconciliation. Reconciliation is a big task and one that is not so easy to engage. It is intensely person and, when entered into fully, can make us extremely vulner- able. It is also not to be done in isolation. Even the tricky notion of being reconciled to ourselves cannot be done by ourselves alone. While different stages and situations require more interpersonal involvement, one that, at least at the beginning, requires no inter- personal interaction is that of our self-exploration. At its core, reconciliation begins within. I heard a preacher say recently that, “Free people, free eople.”1 In other words, she was saying that those of us who are free—or at least well on their way — are the ones that are concerned with using our freedom to free others. By extension, reconciled people reconcile. Our recon- ciliation begins from within. At this point, you might be wondering as to the point of all this reconciliation talk is coming. One reason is that it is the sea- son of Lent. In the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, the epistle reading, taken from Second Corinthians, begins, “We entreat you, on behalf

Lenten Tray

Historically, we at St. Anne’s do not have flowers in front of the altar during Lent. Lent is a season of penitence, preparation and contemplation of ’ path to the cross. It is a time to reflect on our own journeys in faith along with Jesus’ journey to crucifixion and resurrection. This year, we will have a tray in front of the altar. The contents of this tray will change and develop over the weeks reflect- ing the them of Journey. The journey we are on examin- ing ourselves and our lives from chaos to clarity in God. The Liturgy Committee hopes that the Lenten Tray will be an aid to your reflection and preparation throughout Lent.

Vestry Viewpoints …

Since my ambition is to be a humorist, I wanted to write something funny, of course, about being on the Vestry, but that was before I heard Lawrence’s Lenten sermon on Sunday. Since he asked us to be quiet for a long minute, I was able to become a more serious person. In that guise, I offer you my thoughts, such as they are. If you can count money, keep up with the church keep, lock the multiple doors after services, remember to come to meetings, and not fidget, you know more about serving on the Vestry that I did. However, after attending a Vestry Retreat at the Saint Francis Springs Prayer Center in nearby Stoneville, which was quiet and comforting and fun, and two monthly meetings, which were well- organized and fair and informative, I am learning to be a more thoughtful and tolerant person. People of St. Anne's are kind and generous and help one another. I am being mentored by other Vestry members in ways I don’t even know. A friend (not on the Vestry) did suggest that I might give up my relentless barrage of questions as a Lenten sacri- fice, and I am in that mode. You may have noticed? It has made me a more spiritual person (and a better friend) because I am able to hear other voices. Being on the Vestry is doing that for me. If I have had any “mountain top” experiences, as Lawrence asked us to re- member, they have been at St. Anne’s. I can’t say that serving on the Vestry will be one because I still like to ask and answer my own questions (you may have noticed) and I look to the mountain top to be surprised by joy, a phrase I borrowed from the poet Wordsworth. I have felt moments of great joy at St. Anne’s. After the last Vestry meeting I was tired but satisfied that the Vestry had done good work discussing the upcoming Revitalization Plan and other church matters. But it was on Sunday when I passed the Peace to a visitor and felt deeply connected that I thought our 40 days in the wilder- ness might be a mountain top experience. Taking my turn on the vestry has made me aware that I don’t have to have all the answers. I’m prepared to believe that God listens to me, and to each of you. That’s what being on the Vestry will do for you, with God’s help and Lawrence’s call. When we are allowed to move about the sanctuary again in happy pursuit of the Peace, I hope to hug you with all my heart.

The Church often talks about salvation, but what is the point of our salvation if not our rec- onciliation with God? Jesus makes the way for our full reconciliation, with God and with each other and within ourselves through his life, death and resurrection. We understand our recon- ciliation, just as God’s love, to be a gift that is to be given away. Another reason is that I participated in the Institute for Dis- mantling Racism’s two-and-a-half day training last week. As we heard the history presented and were reminded of the depth of the systemic racism within our society and institutions, I couldn’t help but think dismantling racism is reconciliation work. At its core, anti- racism work, while seeking to change the way in which our society views people of different races and reduce the historic disadvantages that people of color face, is the work of reconciliation. This difficult work must begin within ourselves and then spread out to our work. I believe many of you know this already and that many of you have and will continue to work for justice, but what I don’t think any of us fully grasp is how our own, personal work of reconciliation ties in with the larger work and how significant and vital that is. I believe that this parish is uniquely positioned to do the internal work that can only strengthen our work in the world. This is the place, because of our history and our keen awareness of the social inequities that plague our society. I also believe that St. Anne’s is the place to do this work be- cause of the courage demonstrated over the years and because we are a church that believes in peacemaking. To be reconciled is to be at peace. This is not a peace that is simply the absence of war and vio- lence, but a peace that makes violence unnecessary. A reconciled and reconciling community is one that fiercely defends everyone’s right to be heard, treats everyone’s opinions as precious, dutifully and in- tentionally makes a space at the table for all who come, and does not rush to judgment in anything. A reconciled and reconciling commu- nity is one that expects to be disappointed, but works hard not to be bitter; is one where the people are honest when they are hurt and feel mistreated; is one in which there is clear and open communication; and when one of us falls short of the ideal, they are lovingly pointed back toward our purpose for being — to draw all people to Christ and live the reconciling message of the gospel. This article began with a reminder about the request to look for those places within our own lives that are in need of some recon- ciliation work. Reconciliation can be difficult, but it need not be grandiose. We continue our work of reconciliation in small, some- times daily, acts of reconciliation: excusing a mistake, making amends for a harsh word, repent of an oversight, acknowledging an overreaction, offering an olive branch in a conflict of wills. We cannot forget that some of the most intense and necessary work is needed within ourselves. Being reconciled to who we really are — positive and negative — put us solidly on the path that leads to a greater sense of and ability to engage in the work of own reconcilia- tion. As Thomas Merton says: “Our real journey in life is interior; it is a matter of growth, deepening and of an ever greater surrender to the creative action of love and trace in our hears. Never was it more necessary for us to respond to that action. I pray we may all do so generously.”2 If we can begin our quest for reconciliation with those small things within ourselves, then we have begun the work our commu- nity so needs. We will be becoming those who live more authenti- cally and with more joy than we could ever have thought possible. We will be accepting the greatest invitation that we could ever hope to receive — the invitation to be reconciled to God. Lawrence+

Lenten Focus: The Outreach Committee is working on plans to raise money for and HIV/AID education — “Bucks for Botswana” — based on Sharita Womack’s talk to us on December 4. Please look for more details in future bulletins and newsletter.

Food Pantry Donations: Local food pantries are in need of the following items for March: pasta, canned fruit and vegetables, and disposable razors. Please put your donations in the basket at the main entrance to the church or in the Donations Box in the Kennedy Parish Hall. Donations are delivered on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Thanks to all parishioners who contribute to the food pantries every Sunday!

Equality Winston-Salem is hosting Gay Bingo on March 30 at the Benton Convention Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and Bingo begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students with an ID. St. Anne’s is entitled to a church discount of $2 per ticket. If you’d like to attend, please call Mark at the church office to let him know. Proceeds go to Equality Winston-Salem to support the Gay Pride Event this year and to set up a scholarship for high school seniors.

Growing Pains

Coffee hour is a wonderful St. Anne’s happening that new- comers and visitors are struck by. In reality, it’s more about the fellowship and participation than the food — the exception is the young folk who are perpetually hungry and can get away with indul- gence! As our numbers increase — a good thing, but not always easy to handle — we need to pay attention to how we adjust what it is that we provide. To that end, there will always be coffee, tea and juice avail- able after both worship services in the Parish Hall. All are invited to pour a cup and join conversation. On regular Sundays, you will find a few tasty nibbles and fresh fruit to complement your beverage of choice. On Agape Sundays, the first of each month, the congregation provides the refreshments. We look forward to seeing you at the table. 6 Books Needed for F.O.R.E.

F.O.R.E. — “Focus on Reading Excellence” — is a program for fifth grade students at Old Town Elementary School that provides the students with a book of their own for summer reading. St. Anne’s need to collect a total of 90 books — 54 for boys and 36 for girls. There is a donation box at the church or you can donate money to go towards purchasing books. Joyce Kohlfeldt, who owns an educational supply store in Kernersville, will give a 20% discount to everyone who purchases books from her store. It is located at 1365 South Park Drive in Kernersville and the phone number is 996-3090. 7 Easter 2012 Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

So reads our opening acclamation from Easter through Pentecost. This year, we will celebrate the risen Christ on Sunday, April 8, but we are not there yet. We are still without “Alleluias” as we complete our penitential season of Lent. The final week of Lent, the time from Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday, is Holy Week. During Holy Week, we recall the events of Jesus’ last week on earth: his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, cleansing the Temple, teaching, dealing with the challenges of the Pharisees and Sadducees, his Last Supper with the disciples, praying in the Garden of Geth- semane, betrayal, trial, crucifixion, death and burial. On Palm Sunday, or Passion Sunday, our liturgy cele- brates Jesus’ joyful entry into Jerusalem and also deals with the story of Jesus’ passion and death (BCP pages 270-3). Our Palm Sunday service traditionally includes the Liturgy of the Palms in which people gather outside the church with palm fronds or palm leaves to start the service. The color we use for Holy Week is red, symbolizing the blood of Christ. In recent years, we have celebrated The Great Litany (BCP pages 148-155) followed by Holy Communion on the Monday evening of Holy Week as we begin our journey to the Cross. We will do so again on April 2. On Tuesday of Holy Week, we will again have a Service of Reconciliation. This service highlights the penitential as- pect of the season of Lent and provides a venue for communal confession and reconciliation. It is a moving and meaningful service. Try it if you have never been – 0r go again if you have! We continue Wednesday Evening Prayer and Holy Communion throughout the year. This midweek service is a time for community prayer whether you are able to attend the service or not. Know that we are in community and praying every Wednesday evening. We celebrate Holy Thursday, or Maundy Thursday, with an Agape light dinner and the ceremony of foot washing. As Jesus did for his disciples before his Last Supper, so we do for one another. The Last Supper is when Jesus broke bread and gave the cup to his disciples, initiating the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum meaning commandment. At the Last Supper, Jesus said “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” It can be a powerful contemplative service engaging all of us in servanthood to each other. Our Maundy Thursday service (see BCP pages 274-5) emphasizes the gathered community in the presence of Jesus. Traditionally, we include the ceremony of foot washing and Holy Communion during which additional bread and wine are sanctified to be used as reserve sacrament on Good Friday. Good Friday commemorates Jesus’ death on the cross and demonstrates God’s salvation. Good Friday is a solemn and frequently silent service (see BCP pages 276-282). Tradi- tionally, the sanctuary colors of Good Friday are black, symbol- izing the darkness brought into the world by sin. It also sym- bolizes death, not simply the death of Jesus, but also the dying of the whole world burdened by sin. The darkness may also represent the hopelessness and losses that we experience when we try to make our own way in the world without God. Black is used through Holy Saturday, and is always replaced by white before sunrise of Easter Sunday. As we did last year, we will celebrate Holy Saturday (see BCP page 283) at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anne’s And so, we progress through Holy Week toward the Easter Vigil and the first Alleluia. We will celebrate the Easter Vigil beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening, April 7, at St. Stephen’s. It has been our tradition to alternate years with the celebration at St. Anne’s on the odd years and at St. Stephen’s on the even years. We will light the Pascal Candle in the Service of Light, we will hear of God’s saving deeds in history in the Service of Lessons, we will renew our Baptismal Vows (or baptize new members of the Church), and we will celebrate Holy Eucharist all between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter morning (BCP 284). The Easter Season, also known as the Great Fifty Days, begins at sunset on Easter Eve and continues through the Day of Pentecost. According to Venerable Bede, the word Easter came from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess whose holiday was on the spring equinox. At this season, we celebrate with joy Christ’s resurrection and ascension and the giving of the Holy Spirit on the first Easter and on the Day of Pentecost. Celebrating Easter is the pinnacle of the Christian year. The Great Vigil and first Eucharist of Easter is the most impor- tant of all the liturgies of the church. We gather in the dark- ness of Holy Saturday night and, suddenly, a flame is lighted among us. This flame is the new fire, the light of Christ coming among us in the midst of darkness. This return of light sym- bolizes the resurrection of Jesus and the light of salvation God brought into the world through the resurrection. It is the triumph of the light of God’s grace and salvation over the dark- ness of death and sin. The Paschal Candle is lighted from the new fire and is processed into the Nave (the part of the church where the people gather). Leading with this light symbolizes the pillar of fire by which God led the Hebrews out of Egypt toward the (Continued on Page 11)

10 Easter 2012 (Continued from Page ) Promised Land. The celebrant pauses three times to chant, The Light of Christ, and three times the people respond, Thanks be to God. The people light individual candles from the Paschal Candle and the light spreads in the darkness among the con- gregation as we chant and read the Old Testament stories of God’s deliverance of Israel from death and slavery. Then, with the first reading from the resurrection narratives, all the lights come on and we sing Alleluias for the first time since the sea- son after the Epiphany, and we find the church decorated for Easter with the celebratory vestments of white and flowers. We then joyfully celebrate together the first Eucharist of Easter tide. Easter tide begins with that first Alleluia at the Great Vigil, continues through the festive Eucharist of the Day of Resurrection (Easter), and ends 50 days later on the Day of Pentecost. During this season, the liturgical color is white and our lit- urgies are uplifting and joyful. The General Confession is not used during the first weeks. The Paschal Candle burns in the church sanctuary through- out this season. God has brought us full circle: from the ashes of our sinful lives on Ash Wednesday to fullness of life and joy in the Resur- rection. God does, indeed have the final word. The Lord is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

When were women first able to be ? The has been a controversial issue throughout the . By 2010, however, 28 of the 38 provinces of the Anglican Communion ordained women as priests and 17 have removed barriers to women serving as . The first ordinations of women to the Anglican - hood occurred in China. The Japanese invasion and occupa- tion of Hong Kong and other parts of China during World War II made it impossible for Anglican priests to get to neutral , where there were a number of Anglican refugees with no priest. In response, Ronald Hall, , Hong Kong from 1932 until 1966, ordained Florence Li Tim-Oi priest on January 25, 1944. He had previously ordained her - ess. She was the first woman ordained to the priesthood in the Anglican Communion. Her ordination was considered a neces- sity by her Bishop, but subsequently was disapproved of publicly by the Archbishop of Canterbury, . When the war ended in 1945, she resigned her license to avoid controversy though she never renounced her ordination. Bishop Gilbert Baker of the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong and Macau from 1966 to 1980, with approval of the Anglican Consultative Council, ordained the first authorized Anglican female priests in Hong Kong. The Anglican Consulta- tive Council saw the urgent need in China and said it would be acceptable if the Bishop of Hong Kong decided to ordain women to the priesthood. So, in 1971, Jane Hwang and Joyce Bennett were ordained as priests and Li Tim-Oi was officially recognized again as a priest. In the United States, on July 239, 2974, 11 women were controversially ordained to the Episcopal priesthood in Phila- delphia: Merrill Bittner, Alla Bozarth-Campbell, , Emily Hewitt, , Suzanne Hiatt, Marie Moore- field Fleisher, Jeanette Piccard, Betty Bone Schiess, Katrina Martha Swanson and Nancy Hatch Wittig. Their ordinations, performed by retired bishops, were ruled “irregular” because they had been done without the authorization of the Episcopal Church’s General Convention and these women became known as the “ Eleven.” Shortly thereafter, in 1975 in Washington, D.C., four ad- ditional women were similarly “irregularly” ordained: Eleanor Lee McGee, Alison Palmer, Betty Powell and Diane Tickell. Controversy erupted in the church. Charges were filed against the dissident bishops—Daniel Corrigan, Robert DeWitt, Edward Welles and George Barrett—and an emergency meeting of the Episcopal was convened on August 15, 1974. This controversial act had an impact on the church as a whole and, on September 16, 1976, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church meeting in adopted a reso- lution to change the church’s canon law to allow the ordination of women for all three orders of ministry—bishop, priest and deacon. At the same time, the previous ordinations were regu- larized. The first regular ordination occurred on January 1, 1977 when Jacqueline Means was ordained at the Episcopal Church of All Saints in . The decision to ordain women remains optional in each diocese. Today, only a few dioceses in the United States con- tinue to refuse to ordain or recognize the priesthood of women. The first woman bishop in the Anglican Communion was , who was ordained bishop suffragan of in the United States in February 1989. The Episcopal Church has also elected the first woman primate, or senior bishop of a national church. The Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori was elected as Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church at the 2006 General Convention and began her nine year term on November 3, 2006. Launched on Valentine's Day 2012, this boycott is being called by the National Gun Victim’s Action Council (NGAC), a network of 14 million gun victim s, the faith community includ- ing the Episcopal Peace Fellowship, United Church of Christ, Fellowship of Reconciliation (46 peace fellowships and 43 affiliate fellowships), secular groups working to reduce gun violence and many of the organizations that support passing sane gun laws. Why Starbucks? Currently, Starbucks allows guns and assault weapons to be openly carried in its stores in 43 states and concealed and carried in its stores in 49 states. Starbucks’ compliance with the National Rifle Association’s Pro -Gun Agenda was exposed in 2010 when members of the “open carry” movement began meeting in popular chains, such as California Pizza Kitchen, Peets, IKEA, Disney and Starbucks openly carrying their handguns and assault rifles. To protect their customers and employees, all of the retail chains — except for Starbucks — banned guns from being carried in their stores.

Starbucks has the legal right to ban guns, but despite having been petitioned by thousands, asked at a shareholder meeting, and a direct appeal made to their Board, Starbucks clings to this policy that puts million of Americans at risk every day and encourages the spread of guns being carried in public. 15 Piedmont Opera Presents

The Crucible

Currently, the most performed opera by an American com- poser, Dr. Robert Ward’s The Crucible is based on the renowned play of the same name by Arthur Miller. This important work is being offered as Piedmont Opera’s spring production. According to Dennis Dooley, winner of the 1986 Cleveland Arts Price for Literature: “The consensus of critics and audiences is that Ward and Stambler, the opera’s librettist, succeeded in creating that rarest of stage works: a musically compelling setting of a great literary work—in this case, Arthur Miller’s gripping attack on the anti -communist hysteria of the early 1950s that reached its apotheosis in the hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee, which ruined lives and careers in the name of rooting out dangerous ideas.” Terrorism has replaced communism as the biggest fear factor of the day, but the common themes of The Crucible are linked today to many areas of our society, including politics, religion, law and the arts. The Crucible serves as a warning to be ever vigilant in dealing with those themes today. Piedmont Opera’s production of The Crucible on March 16, 18 and 20 at the Stevens Center will be the first by a professional opera company in Winston-Salem. Dr Ward, who is now 94 years young, will be in attendance on opening night. He will hold a “Conversation with the Composer” at the theater on Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m. Tickets for the opera range in price from $80 to $15. First Sunday Agape

On first Sundays, parishioners are invited to bring finger foods to share at the 11 a.m. service. This pot luck agape is the time to try out new recipes or bring the tried and true — and spend a longer time chatting and snacking. Please be sure to participate if you can. The table will be set up by the coffee host and beverages provided. We just need yummy food to serve. Also, it’s always nice to have the early service folks return to fellowship with us.
