Hillary Douglas, son of Moses & Catherine Douglas

By Jennifer Douglas

Hillary Douglas was born in 1793 in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland. He married Mary Corner (Cordner) on 11 September 1815, in Lurgan, at Shankill Church. They had 11 children during their marriage. He died on June 14, 1849, in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland, at the age of 56.

This is a transcription of his baptism and marriage:

Hilary Douglas son of Moses Douglas and Catherine, Sego 29 February 1793

Hilary Douglafs, Shankill married Mary Corner 11 September 1815

In 1816 and 1826, Hillary Douglas and his brothers are named in the Freeholders list for Seagoe. You can see the entries for these at PRONI: http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/freeholders_records.htm

In 1834, Hillary and his brothers are named in the Seagoe Tithe Applotments:

Douglass, Henry - Kinnago

Douglass, Hillary - Kinnago

Douglass, James - Drumnakelly

Douglass, M. - Kinnago

Douglass, Moses - Kinnago

Douglass, Robert - Kinnago

The original home, that the 1864 Griffiths Valuation indicates as being where Hillary Douglas lived, no longer exists. However the Main home that now stands is built on the foundations of an older home, likely the original Marsden home that became Moses & Hillary Douglas’s home. This ‘newwer’ home was likely built by his son, Hillary.

Mary Ann Douglas dates unknown

Isabella Douglas was born about 1821. She died on January 13, 1897, aged 76 years.

Margaret Douglas was born about 1822. She died on March 21, 1880, aged 58 years.

Susannah Douglas was born about July 1824 and died in her infancy.

Catherine Douglas was born about 1825. She married Joseph Brown, son of Thomas Brown, on January 23, 1846, in Lurgan, Armagh, N. Ireland. They had one child that we know of during their marriage. And at this time we are not certain when she died.

Moses Douglas Brown was born about 1847, in Armagh, N. Ireland. He was married three times and had three daughters. He died on December 9, 1920, in Lurgan, Armagh, N. Ireland, when e was 73.

Married Jane Lyness on June 9, 1866, in Maralin, Down, N. Ireland, when he was 19 years old. Jane and Moses had two daughters: Isabella Brown born 5 September 1867 in Moira, Down, N. Ireland & Catherine Jane Douglas Brown, born 26 December 1869 in Moira , Down, N. Ireland. Jane died before 1877.

We are in touch with a descendant of Isabella Brown. Mom was able to meet her when she visited Ireland in 2015.

Married Jane McKeown on September 29, 1877, in Lurgan, Armagh, N. Ireland, when he was 30 years old. They had one daughter, Henrietta Elizabeth Brown born 16 December 1881. Jane passed away on January 4, 1883.

We know from Henrietta’s birth entry, that Moses’ occupation was “Engine Driver”. The family also lived Taughrane (a townland 1km E of Lurgan; 196 acres). Dollingstown is in this townland, where he is later found to be living in the 1901 and 1911 census. His occupation is these census was Hand Loom Camberic Weaver.

Married Rachel Mussen on 3 December 1884, in Lurgan, Armagh, N. Ireland.

Hannah Douglas was born about January 1826, in Armagh, N. Ireland.

Harriett Douglas was born about 1828, in Kinnego, Armagh, . She died in her infancy.

Harriet Douglas (s) was born in 1831 in Kinnego, Armagh, Northern Ireland. She married William Macoun on October 26, 1851, in Church, Armagh, Northern Ireland. They had one child that we know of. She died in March 1905 at the age of 74, at Dublin, Ireland. Her husband, William Macoun was born in 1830 in, Armagh, N. Ireland. He appears to have died before 1864 in Kinnego, Armagh, N Ireland, around the age of 34 or younger.

Harriett and her father-in-law are found in the 1864 Griffiths Valuation living at position 43 on the map, in Kinnegoe, not far from her Douglas family. Since William Macoun is not named, I assume that he has H i l l a r y Douglas, son of Moses & Catherine P a g e | 4

passed away at the time of the valuation. The home is still there today and has been well looked after, these are pictures that have been kindly shared with us:

Their son Hillary Macoun was born about 1853, in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland. The Belfast Newsletter 24 May 1854: has a possible birth announcement for Hillary: May 23 at Lurgan, the wife of Mr. William Macoun, of a son. He married Sarah Christina Morrow in June 1886. They had three children during H i l l a r y Douglas, son of Moses & Catherine P a g e | 5

their marriage. He died on 23 February 1932, at the age of 79. He was living in Acton, Middlesex, London when he passed away.

1. Harriett Ellenor was born in March 1888 in Dublin. She died 25 December 1934 at 10 Emmanuel Ave, Acton (her father’s address). 2. Eveline (Eveleen) Maude was born on 1 June 1890, in Dublin. She died 1983 in Ealing, Middlesex 3. Sarah Florence was born in 1893 in Dublin. She died 18 June 1960 in Ealing, Middlesex, England

None of the sisters married.

In February 1887 Hillary is listed as Secretary for MESSRS J H Web & Co. (findmypast: Freemans Journal). I was not able to find the family in the 1901 census (I did find Harriet, she is living on her own Lurgan at 11 John St), but we do find them in 1911. Hillary, Sarah and their daughter Sarah are living at 20 Ashfield Rd, Dublin. Hillary’s occupation is listed as Accountants Clerk. At some point they moved to London where Hillary died.

Dublin Daily Express 20 May 1886

This news article announcing Hillary Macoun’s marriage to Sarah, indicates that he was the eldest son of William Macoun of Kinnego. So we know that Harriett and William had at least one other child but I have not be able to find who that would be at this time. It is possible that the Seagoe Parish Church records will tell us what children Harriett and William had.

Hillary Douglas was born about 1831, in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland & baptized at Shankill Parish church 11 April 1831. He died on September 7, 1915, in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland, having lived a long life of 84 years.

Hillary was the next to last Douglas family member to own the Douglas home and farmland that had been in the Douglas family since at least 1791 (although, this land had been in our Marsden family since at least the mid 1600s). Hillary’s will survives and can be found at PRONI. In it he leaves the farm to his grand-nephew Henry Anderson. Henry in turn sold the land to the family who currently still own the farm and land.

This is Hillary’s will,

from PRONI. In it he also names other family members: Nieces Annie & Florrie Douglas (daughters of his brother Rev. Moses Douglas). Grandniece Harriet

Macoun (granddaughter of his sister Harriet Douglas). He also names his nephew William Hill and William Morton married to his niece. These last two and Henry Anderson are from his sister Mary Ann Douglas.

Henry Douglas was born about July 1833, in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland and baptized at Shankill Parish Church 12 August 1833. He died on January 10, 1921, at the age of 87 and did not marry.

Henry was a Linen Manufacturer, and was a partner in the business Seawright and Douglas that was located on Avenue Road. Findmypast has a record Henry’s portion of Railroad Shares that were apparently jointly held with William John Seawright, being transferred to William. This document states that Henry’s address in Lurgan was No. 1 Queen Street. Henry’s will does not seem to have survived, all the PRONI has is an abstract: Probate of the Will of Henry Douglas late of Lurgan, Co. Armagh, Linen Manufacturer, who died 7 January 1921 granted at Armagh 19 February 1921 to Hillary Macoun, Accountant, the nephew. Effects: £14010 0s 0d.

Mom, Mavis, was able to see the factory building as it is today

In June 2015

In the 1911 census we find Henry living as a boarder at no. 32

Queen’s Street, Lurgan, Armagh. He is 82 and lists his religion as

Episcopalian and occupation is Linen Manufacturer. I was not able to find him in the 1901 census.

Rev. Moses Douglas was born on March 7, 1834, in Kinnego, Armagh, N. Ireland. He married Ellen Gallagher, daughter of James Gallagher, on April 25, 1865, in Cavan, Cavan, Ireland. They had five children during their marriage. He died on November 26, 1913, aged 79 years. Moses was a Methodist Pastor and was at times placed near to his Uncle Rev William Douglas who was in Irvinestown.

Rev. William Magee Douglas named Rev Moses Douglas in one of letters where he is writing of what he recalled of our family history. He states the Moses knew more of our family history and for this reason we (Mavis and Jennifer) have tried to contact family descended from Moses. Mavis & Bill have met one of his granddaughter’s, but she didn’t have much to share beyond a picture of Moses’ son and a family bible. We are trying, at this time, to get in touch with a grandson who may hold more information for us.

They were Ellen Douglas Madden, Olive Mary Madden & Harriet Maud Madden. Olive was the only one to marry; she went to Trinity College in Dublin and it was there that she met her future husband Rev. John Henry Douglas was born on July 20, 1870, in Cavan, Cavan, Ireland. He died on October 24, 1905, in Bessbrook, Armagh, Northern Ireland, at the age of 35. John was Methodist and Presbytarian Minister. He had health problems, at one time being cleared by the Methodist church to go to South Africa where it was hoped his health would improve. I am not certain that he went as I have not found evidence of him going.

In 1895 he is listed as placed on the “list of Reserve” for the Methodist Church on “account of health”. Methodist records show that he had permission to reside in South Africa in 1895. In 1900 he was a Junior Minister who became a Supernumerary for one year. One of the reasons a person would become a Supernumerary was due to ill health. John was likely still able to serve, but in a limited capacity.

Written on the back of this picture: “Rev J H Douglas Incumbent (?) of St Aiden’s Belfast. Died Oct 24th 1905. Dearly Loved”

This is a picture of John that Claire Gordon was able to share with us

The Rev. J. H. Douglas, B.A., was appointed as successor to Mr. Northridge in November, 1902. He had been associated with him as in the work of the Parish, and brought to his more responsible position a rich experience, a ripe judgment, and an exceedingly sympathetic disposition. The Parish made progress under his guidance, but soon ill-health interrupted what had promised to become a fruitful ministry and after a prolonged illness he passed to his reward on the 24th October, 1905. His devotion, his faithfulness, his sincerity, his purity, his lofty ideals, but above all his passion to win souls for Jesus Christ, are still remembered by those upon whom his too brief ministry left an abiding impression. A handsome brass Mural

Tablet has been erected in the Church, and a beautiful brass eagle Lectern, both gifts by the parishioners are fitting memorials of one who was greatly beloved.
