This was successful for the most part and continued throughout the series. However, this was not what drove viewers up the wall. Code Geass R2 introduced a lot of material, but possibly more than the producers could handle within the span of twenty-five episodes. The pacing towards the end of the series seemed rushed and there were a handful of questions left unanswered including the huge controversy as to whether or not Lelouch is really the man driving the cart in the final episode or is he simply dead after being stabbed by Suzaku.

The second season became one that started out as the most anticipated and successful series of Spring 2008 but slowly fell apart by working with more material than the producers could handle. The final episode had its redeeming points that saved the series from a total collapse, but it still left another cliffhanger like its prequel as to whether Lelouch continues to live on. Macross Frontier, although inferior to its various prequels, continues to leave an everlasting impact in anime history, almost like Neon Genesis Evangelion.

This is why I believe Macross Frontier is not only more successful than Code Geass R2 but also a better series. Macross Frontier was an underdog that rose through the ranks to become one of the all-time best anime series in history in various departments. Code Geass R2 was highly anticipated, yet did not properly deliver on its early promise.

It combines most of the vocal tracks from the previous releases and adds new ones that were played in the series but never released!

Here, each track of the first disc will be reviewed with a score out of 10 following each track. Spoilers will be kept to a minimum. Since I will constantly be using names of both the seiyuu cast and the characters of the series, this following is a simply guide as to who is who:

The best parts of this series are the humour and the romance between Taro and Mariel. In typical fashion neither are able to express their feelings, and the Master Vs servant relationship only makes this worse. A particular funny moment which is used several times in the first episodes; whenever Taro comes across something odd in the mansion, Mariel just comes back with “it’s the old master’s hobby” and just walks off.

During the “Bon” period he gives the maids a day off. Mariel, Cynthia and Kone-san remain. All but Konoe-san start playing a game where by Taro is blind-folded and has to smash water melons using the instructions from Mariel and a large stick.

My onward connection to Tokyo was via Seoul in South Korea. As I had to pass through Korea I decided to take a day to visit the city as well.

I had no Korean language skills nor had any idea of what I should be seeing in Seoul but with only a day and a half, the time was seriously limited.

I did however manage to see the area near the hotel as well as an area of clubs and bars frequented by many tourists; the most interesting place was an Ice Bar.

When you enter and take your seat you are given a paper napkin and a bottle opener. I later discovered my problem was because I was looking at the wrong map, there are basically 2 systems, there are the subway lines and the JR Lines, each have a different map.

After a bit of getting used to, the Tokyo subway is real pleasure to use, the stations even have the English/Romanji name displayed on the platform.

They had performances every 10 minutes or so, dancing maids, paper scissors stone with the audience, stirring service, photo service, decorative service on your food and even a cat basket under your table to put your bag in when you sit down. This was moe, real moe at its best! I even shelled out for a Polaroid with my maid.

Later that evening while wondering around Akihabara I came across an anime car decorated on all 4 sides with anime characters, it was quite beautiful and the detail was amazing. Happy New Year Tokyo!

Dec 31st - It’s finally the end of 2007, and where better to spend the New Year than at the Tokyo Tower?

The owner was clearly very proud as they had placed a picture in the window displaying the original image of the characters.

I decided this simply had to be the place, having seen this done on TV and in so many animes, I had to do it myself. I still had the rest of the day to spend and went on a tour of the Asakusa town area.

In the evening I decided I would make a special detour - to a place from my favourite anime movie, You’re Under Arrest - The Motion Picture. Where else would I pick but the Kachidoki Bridge (this is the bridge which is raised after been inactive for 30 years in the final part of the movie).

The tower was initially lit up as normal with white light, with the addition of some xmas twinkle lights and a series of spot lights from the ground.

As the New Year approached the tower changed colour and the lights followed a sequence, going blue, orange, red and various sections lighting up or flashing.

The tower went through 5 different phases before the final countdown. Each phase had the lights switching off this was followed by the twinkle lights flashing.

The final countdown was done using a LCD style number display which was attached to the lower observation deck, and eventually ended up with a big 2008 displayed at midnight.

more times shortly after, and then stayed the orange colour as in the lower picture.

I then made my way slowly through the crowds to the nearest subway station, and joined the very long queue.

The large numbers of people all trying to get away from the tower area made it a long wait for tickets and then again for the train.
