r. E. Joseph Savoie became the sixth president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on July 1, 2008. Formerly the Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Louisiana, Dr. Savoie replaces outgoing University president Dr. Ray Authement who retired after more than 40 years of service to the University. D He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from UL Lafayette and earned a doctor of education in educational leadership and administration from Columbia University’s Teachers College administration in New York. Prior to his appointment in 1996 as the state’s Commissioner of Higher Education, Savoie served in many roles on the UL Lafayette campus, including Vice President for University Advancement, executive director of the Alumni Association, program director for Union Program Council and student government advisor, as well as an adjunct assistant professor. Dr. Savoie was involved in several recent major postsecondary education reforms in Louisiana,

DAVID WALKER Director of Athletics | Louisiana-Lafayette, 1976 62 fter nearly two years at the helm as Interim Director Athletics post-Hurricane Katrina, David Walker was appointed to the position on a full-time basis on July 17, 2007. Walker, a graduate of the University in 1976, has served his alma mater in various administrative positions since 1978. A In 2005, as the Interim AD, Walker coordinated the post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans Bowl which was played at UL’s Cajun Field. He was also instrumental in the cultivation of Cox Communication’s donation of $2 million to the Louisiana Department of Athletics, the largest single gift to the program. Walker, a Bunkie, La. native, graduated from Berwick High School. Following a four-year enlistment in the United States Air Force, Walker enrolled at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL). Walker later obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Business and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University. He has been married to the former Patricia Sutton of Berwick, La., for 36 years and they are the parents of one daughter, Ginny Rebecca.
