Head Coach Bob Nielson Bob Nielson was introduced as the 30th head coach in the history of University of South Dakota football in December of 2015. It is the sixth head coaching stint for Nielson, who has enjoyed success at every level of . He is a three-time national coach of the year recipient, a two-time national champion head coach, and was Missouri Valley Football Conference Coach of the Year in 2016. The 2020-21 season is the 28th for Nielson as a head coach.

Nielson has been labeled a builder throughout NIELSON’S COACHING FILE his career, and he has added to that legacy at USD. In just his second season with the Coyotes, Nielson COACHING HISTORY 1981-86 Wartburg College led the program to a record eight wins at the Offensive Line Coach Division I level and to the FCS playoffs for the first 1987-88 Wartburg College time. It marked the fifth consecutive program that Defensive Coordinator has reached the playoffs within four years of Nielson 1989-90 Ripon College taking the helm. The Coyotes won their FCS playoff Head Coach debut in 2017 and reached the final 16. 1991-95 Wartburg College Head Coach Nielson crossed yet another milestone in 2018. 1996-98 UW-Eau Claire The Coyotes’ 31-24 win at Southern Illinois in their Head Coach conference opener marked Nielson’s 200th career 1999-03, 08-12 Minnesota Duluth win and he needed less than 300 games to get there.
