In just under 24 hours, Spellman's Principal, Mr. Dan O’Keefe ran 100 miles on the Spellman track to raise funds for the student sports and activities programs. Principal O'Keefe, a decorated athlete, completed 403.25 laps continuously starting on Friday, November 7th at 6:00 a.m. and finishing at 5:49 a.m. on Saturday, Principal O’Keefe after having completed 100 mile run November 8th. Spellman ALS Fundraiser and Faculty Ice bucket Challenge e ALS Fundraiser was a huge success due to the efforts of students, faculty, staff and administration. In a combined effort of the National Honor Society's raffle ticket sales, the Service Society's bake sale and the “Ice bucket Challenge”, the Spellman community raised over $1,000 for charity. Particular thanks to the very brave faculty and staff who endured avalanches of water and ice being poured on them in front of a crowd of enthusiastic students. A special film screening of “Finding Samuel Lowe: From to China” took place at Spellman on November 13th. e evening was hosted by alumnus, Dean Meminger ’88, Reporter for NY1 News and was followed by a Q&A with film producer and alumna Paula (Williams) Madison ’70. is documentary highlights the story of the Williams family discovering their heritage by searching for clues about their long-lost Chinese grandfather, Samuel Lowe. At its heart, this is a story about familial love and devotion that transcends race, space and time. Retired NbC universal executive, Paula (Williams) Madison ‘70 and her brothers, elrick Paula (Williams) Madison ’70 with Dean Meminger ’88 and Howard Williams, were raised in Harlem by their Chinese Jamaican mother, Nell Vera Lowe. Nell encouraged them to realize the rags-to- riches American dream, resulting in their growth from welfare recipients to wealthy entrepreneurs. In order to fulfill a promise to their mother to connect to her estranged father's people, they embark on a journey to uncover their ancestral roots. e three traveled to the toronto Hakka Chinese Conference where they connected with members of the Chinese Jamaican community. Cardinal Spellman High School awarded academic honors pins and recognition to 355 of our finest students at a ceremony held on the evening of September 30th. Students were joined by family, friends, staff, and faculty to be acknowledged for their meticulous efforts during the preceding academic year. In addition to awards for 1st and 2nd honors, 33 seniors received the Diamond "S" pin, one of Spellman’s highest academic honors – for having achieved first honors each of their first three years at Spellman and successfully passing all regents examinations in one attempt. eir names will be engraved on the Diamond "S" board located in the main hallway. e National Honor Society also inducted new students into their ranks. Mr. Donato Settanni ’73 and Son Award iPads to Contest Winners

rough Mr. Don Settanni’s ’73 organization – Special Kids of New York – 5 iPads were donated to students at Spellman. e students from all grade levels had to write an essay to be in the running for one of the iPads. Out of the many students who entered the contest, 5 winners were chosen. Mr. Settanni and his son, David, gave the students the iPads on December 23rd. e contest was run by Mrs. Delia Rivera, Director of Annual giving. St. omas Aquinas College Environmental Sustainability Competition Members of the 4g Club (go green garden group) represented Spellman at the St. omas Aquinas environmental Sustainabil - ity Competition. Five schools were selected from the tri-state area, with each school presenting their environmental sustain - ability proposal. e judges were quite impressed with Cardinal Spellman’s comprehensive “green” initiatives and awarded the 4g Club a $500 prize for their presentation. Coach DeSimone was one of the most successful coaches in Cardinal Spellman’s history. He dedicated 8 years of diligent service and hard work which resulted in two championships and a lasting culture of integrity and pride in Spellman Football. Prior to the varsity game against the Nazareth Kingsmen,the alumni took to the field for their own football game. Players wore special alumni football t- shirts, created just for this game. During half-time of the varsity game, Coach DeSimone was honored with a plaque and a certificate presented to him by Mr. Fred Opper, our Athletic Director. e varsity football team would go on to win the homecoming game. However, the win did not come without a significant amount of anxiety Coach Joe DeSimone with his family during the halftime and suspense. e Pilots nearly surrendered a double digit second half lead, presentation ceremony allowing Nazareth to come within one point of gaining the upper hand. In the end, the tenacious Spellman defense came through in the clutch with a game clinching sack on Nazareth’s elusive quarterback. e home crowd erupted in cheers! e final score was 27 to 26. A great time was had by all!

Ms. Jane Morris to be Honored Induction into the New York State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame

Ms. Jane (Lacey) Morris ’71 is to be inducted into the New York State basketball Coaches Hall of Fame on March 22, 2015 for her dedication to excellence and hard work. In an already highly decorated and celebrated coaching career, which includes membership in the Spellman Hall of Fame, Ms. Morris has accumulated more than 700 wins since she took over coaching the girls Varsity basketball team in 1973. It is a testament to her tireless work on and off the court that she will be honored with an additional prestigious hall of fame induction.
