HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Muffet McGraw, 2 George McGinnis, and Tom Jernstedt.

3 Whereas, The Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame 4 announced the 11 members of the Class of 2017 to be 5 honored September 7-9, 2017, in Springfield, Massachusetts, 6 the birthplace of basketball and the home of the Naismith 7 Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame;

8 Whereas, To be elected to the Naismith Memorial 9 Basketball Hall of Fame, North American and Women's 10 Committee finalists must receive 18 of 24 votes from the 11 Honors Committee;

12 Whereas, The Class of 2017 includes three Indiana 13 natives — three-time consensus National College Coach of 14 the Year Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame, six-time all-star 15 and former Pacer player George McGinnis, and NCAA 16 basketball administrator Tom Jernstedt;

17 Whereas, Muffet McGraw is the only male or female 18 three-time consensus National Coach of the Year, sweeping 19 the four major National Coach of the Year awards (Naismith, 20 Associated Press, WBCA, USBWA) in 2001, 2013, and 2014;

21 Whereas, Muffet McGraw is also a seven-time conference 22 Coach of the Year taking honors in the East Coast 23 Conference (1983), North Star Conference (1988), 24 Midwestern Collegiate Conference (1991), Big East (2001, 25 2013), and the Atlantic Coast Conference (2014, 2016);

1 Whereas, As the coach of Notre Dame women's basketball 2 since 1987, Muffet McGraw has led the Fighting Irish to 24 3 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including 15 Sweet Sixteens, 4 eight Elite Eights, and seven Final Fours (1997, 2001, 2011, 5 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) with one National Championship in 6 2001;

7 Whereas, Muffet McGraw is one of four coaches in NCAA 8 Division I history with 800 wins, seven Final Fours, and five 9 NCAA title games;

10 Whereas, George McGinnis was a six-time all-star during 11 his professional career in both the ABA (1971-1975) and the 12 NBA (1975-1982);

13 Whereas, George McGinnis averaged 25.2 points and 12.9 14 rebounds per game in the ABA, winning two ABA 15 championships with the (1972, 1973) and 16 co-MVP honors with Hall of Fame inductee 17 (1975), and has been named to the 30-man ABA All-Time 18 Team;

19 Whereas, While playing in the NBA, George McGinnis 20 averaged 17.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game and made 21 the All-NBA First Team in 1976;

22 Whereas, A native of , George McGinnis was 23 a force to be reckoned with at the amateur level also, leading 24 George Washington High School to an undefeated season 25 and a state championship in 1969, and earning All-American 26 distinction while averaging 29.9 points per game at Indiana 27 University;

28 Whereas, Tom Jernstedt is the basketball administrator 29 who is credited with guiding the NCAA Men's Division I 30 Basketball Championship to the elite sporting event it is 31 today;

32 Whereas, In 38 consecutive years with the NCAA 33 (1972-2010), Tom Jernstedt held numerous leadership roles, 34 including executive vice president, while being a liaison to 35 committees focused on officiating and television 36 negotiations; he also served as president (2001-2004) and

1 vice president (1997-2000) with USA Basketball;

2 Whereas, Tom Jernstedt was one of the most influential 3 figures in college basketball and college sports, receiving the 4 Basketball Hall of Fame's Lifetime Achievement 5 Award (2001) and USA Basketball's Edward S. Steitz Award 6 (2009);

7 Whereas, Tom Jernstedt was inducted into the College 8 Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 and was a key player in the 9 NCAA's 1997 move to Indianapolis from Overland Park, 10 Kansas; and

11 Whereas, Outstanding talents such as Muffet McGraw, 12 George McGinnis, and Tom Jernstedt deserve special 13 recognition: Therefore,

14 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 15 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 16 the Senate concurring:

17 SECTION 1. That the members of the Indiana General Assembly 18 congratulate Muffet McGraw, George McGinnis, and Tom Jernstedt on 19 their induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 20 and thank them for the countless hours of enjoyment they have brought 21 to basketball fans throughout the world. 22 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of 23 Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Muffet McGraw, 24 George McGinnis, and Tom Jernstedt.
