All grades wanted with Bryan Read Ltd’s smart Simmental x topping the day at 198.5p/kg. Angus and Herefords were again a fast trade and more wanted urgently; Angus topping at 186.5p/kg and Hereford topping at 190.5p/kg. Friesians met another excellent trade and dear topping at 174.5p/kg and many more could have been sold.

STORE SHEEP (79) (Av. £75) A nice entry of store hoggs forward today which enjoyed a flying trade. Top price to £89 from PG Apsey of . Other stronger types to £85 from M Gooden of Wells and £84 from RM Seager. More could have been sold to the advantage. ORPHAN LAMBS (4) A small selection of orphan lambs which enjoyed competitive bidding and sold at £8.

CULL EWES & RAMS (147) (Av. £60.97) A nice entry of ewes forward today which enjoyed a solid trade. Best types to £84 from PG Apsey with others to £82 from PM & SA Bishop. Stronger type ewes all £75 plus; medium types £60 and smaller types nearly all £45 plus. More ewes needed each week to meet demand.

CALVED HEIFERS TO £1650 CALVED COWS TO £1350 Trade continuing to be lively in the dairy ring and quality types regularly £1400 - £1600. Top spot to AF Leighton for his freshly calved British Friesian heifer at £1650. Paul and Kay Trippick again presenting a quality home bred Holstein calved heifer at £1400. Early and mid lactation heifers from Michelmersh Manor Farm sold to a keen trade £1000 - £1350. Leaner Holstein type in calf heifers due May onwards to Friesian sold to £990.

CALVES NON EXPORT (444) Starts 10.00am AUCTIONEERS: TIM HECTOR 07818 056 049 CHARLIE COLEMAN: 07494 588 013 Yet again another record entry in Frome 444 calves this week with plenty of new and old vendors and customers alike; the most since January 2001! A super entry of calves today with a huge variety on offer with the best £388. A ring full of customers contested all 444 calves on offer.

CONTINENTAL BULLS TO £388 Best sorts saw keen demand and more could have been sold to an advantage. Best bull to £388 from Stavordale farm Ltd. Medium sorts £200 - £280; smaller bulls £120 - £200; plainer calves to £100.

CONTINENTAL HEIFERS TO £295 More forward and overall more trade with more buyers for continental heifers. Plenty of well shaped Blues over £240 topping at £295 and £290. Lots of medium sorts £120 - £200; smaller calves to £100.

NATIVE BULLS TO £275 / NATIVE HEIFERS TO £128 Over two thirds of the days entries were native sired calves. Quality was patchy with a real selection on offer with many smaller, plain calves seeing a buoyant trade. Best Hereford bulls sold twice to £275 and heifers to £128. Angus bulls to £228 and heifers to £115. FRIESIANS TO £152 Fewer forward but still all wanted with more rearers here today. Mainly smaller framed calves with the best Friesians to £152; most £20 - £50 with Shorthorns to £165. REARED CALVES/STIRKS (90) A superb show of weaned calves today for our fortnightly sale which is drawing customers new and old. Angus really were the stars of the show today with the best steers racing to £450 for Green Lanes Farming Ltd, Portsmouth. Close behind were another super run of 45 from A Booth and family of PK Framptons whose Angus topped at £445. The same consignments of Holstein Friesians filled the ring and the best really caught attention topping at £198 which looked a good price. Their Blue heifers also flew to £390 for three cracking animals and steers to £435. It was a pleasure to see a consignment of stirks from Andy and Marie Robinson in the market today whose best Hereford steers topped at £400 and Fleckviehs to £360. A rare sight today was a fantastic run of Charolais from KJ Osborne topping at £425 with others at £375 and Angus at £365. Mr Candy of Cannett Farms entry sold very well with Hereford heifers topping at £290. A good entry is coming in for a fortnight’s time.
