The Rosebank Neighbourhood is bounded by the Rouge River to the west, Highway 401 to the north, Petticoat Creek to the east, and Lake Ontario to the south. The total area of the neighbourhood is 2.16 square kilometres, and includes a portion of the Rouge National Urban Park and most of the Petticoat Creek Conservation Area. Historically an Iroquois village existed near the mouth of the Rouge River.
Initial cottage housing development occurred between 1900 and 1940. More recent subdivision activity began in the 1970’s. Residential development consists primarily of detached dwellings on large lots. The neighbourhood includes: an elementary school; neighbourhood parks; and retirement home on Rodd Avenue, but it does not contain any neighbourhood shopping amenities. The neighbourhood has some opportunities for infill housing.
The Canadian National rail line traverses the neighbourhood from southwest to northeast, along which GO Rail Transit, VIA and Canadian National Freight service operate. Bounded by the Rouge River, there is no road connection westwards to the City of Toronto. The Rougemount overpass connects the neighbourhood to Kingston Road north of Highway 401, while access from the east is provided via Granite Court that connects to Whites Road further east. There is no direct road connection from Highway 401 to the neighbourhood.
The Rouge River, the Petticoat Creek Conservation Area, a waterfront trail, and Lake Ontario shoreline are major elements of the City’s Natural Heritage System, and provide various opportunities for passive and active recreation and environmental education, and they contribute towards the scenic character and identity of this neighbourhood.
