The Career and Technical Education, Occupation-Based Education program consisting of 64 hours is not a “typical” undergraduate education option. Candidates must be certified in an occupation-based trade or skill, i.e. carpentry, welding, etc., and complete the 60 hour program to be certified to teach in 5-12 technical schools.

There are no key assessments included in this program. In order to complete the program, a GPA of 2.75 must be maintained.

Kentucky P-12 Curriculum Requirements The following information is gathered in accordance with Senate Bill 1 - http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/09RS/SB1.htm and the associated legislation tied to this bill.

Program: Occupation-based Career and Technical Education_BS and AAS______

1. Describe the process (courses, assessments, measurements) for ensuring that the candidates in your program know their content as defined by the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS).

Candidates in Occupation-based Career and Technical Education program are engaged in content knowledge, professional and twenty first century skills through several avenues. The candidates in the program are: 1) located in various schools and industrial settings where they interrelate with the various parties such as students, teachers, administrators, parents, supervisors, owners, engineers, and other individuals appropriate to the setting; 2) exposed to an international faculty and students in the department of Industrial Engineering and Technology as they satisfy the program area requirements; 3) invited to participate in university, college and department sponsored events intended to expand, test and define their knowledge and abilities. The program is for those teachers who were hired with work experience and have completed their 64-hour planned program. These candidates are hired as Rank III teachers. When they complete their 64-hour planned program and three years of teaching they can apply for a Rank change to a Rank II. If the teacher chooses to obtain a Rank I they must complete a BS in either the field that they are teaching or this program and six years of teaching. All of these teachers must complete Career and Technical Education (CTE) CTE 185 – NTI Career and Technical Education. CTE 185 is a cooperative effort between the Kentucky Office of Career and Technical Education, Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, , and Morehead State University. During the New Teacher Institute various topics are covered including Introduction to Lesson Planning, Teaching Special Needs Students, Assessment Techniques, Instructional Media, Methods of Instruction, Group Instruction, Management of Instruction, Lesson Plan Development, and Lab Safety.

2. Describe the process (courses, assessments, measurements) for ensuring that the candidates in your program are able to combine this content knowledge with appropriate pedagogy as defined by the InTASC Standards/Kentucky Teacher Standards; this involves a careful consideration of how these InTASC/KTS work with your program’s professional association (SPA) standards. Candidates in Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, Occupation-based Career & Technical Education Option expand their comprehension in 1) technical-management occupations in business, industry, education, and government; 2) applying theories, concepts, and principles of humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and other disciplines to develop communications skills required for supervisors, technical managers and educators; 3) understanding and applying concepts of mathematics, physics, statistics, economics, computer fundamentals, and other disciplines to solve technological problems; and 4) applying concepts and skills developed in a variety of technical and related disciplines including total quality management, materials and production processes, supervisory and management principles, and quality control to manage personnel and facilities. Field experiences and clinical practice are to make sure that candidates participate in actual classroom settings. This enables candidates to experience all aspects of a classroom environment so they may be able to provide an appropriate experience for their future students.

4. Describe the process (courses, assessments, measurements) for ensuring that the candidates in your program have the knowledge, skill and dispositions to create and use formative and summative assessments that guide instruction toward mastery of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS).

The rank change programs are designed to introduce candidates to the concept of student assessment and the need to evaluate assessment data. CTE 388 Methods of Curriculum Development introduces the concept of student assessment as well as organization of assessment items based on skill and Depth of Knowledge (DOK). CTE 393 Methods in Career & Technical Education includes measuring and evaluating student achievement and instructional assessment and evaluation. It is during CTE 394 Practicum in Career & Technical Education that candidates are responsible for developing and implementing units of study and lesson plans from which they are gather student assessment data.
