BY PHILIP ELLIOTT The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Where is the NRA? The nation’s largest gun-rights organization — typically outspoken about its positions even after shooting deaths — has gone all but silent since last week’s rampage at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 26 people dead, including 20 children. Its Facebook page has disappeared. It has posted no tweets. It makes no mention of the shooting on its website. None of its leaders hit the media circuit Sunday to promote its sup- port of the Second Amendment right to bear arms as the nation mourns the latest shooting victims and opens a new debate over gun restrictions. On Monday, the NRA offered no rebuttal as 300 anti-gun protesters marched to its Capitol Hill office. After previous mass shootings — such as in Oregon and Wisconsin — the group was quick to both send its condolences and defend gun owners’ constitutional rights, popular among millions of Americans. There’s no indication that the National Rifle Association’s silence this time is a signal that a change in its ardent opposition to gun restrictions is imminent. Nor has there been any explanation for its absence from the debate thus far. Obama ups bid as GOP looks for way out of crisis

It’s possible to have a strong hand and still overplay it. As Republicans see things, that’s what President Obama is doing in the “fiscal cliff” negotiations. In private conversation, some in the GOP appear a little sheepish about the fact that they once took the president seriously. Even though he had the upper hand after winning re-election, they thought he gen- uinely wanted to avoid going over the cliff and would negotiate in good faith. Then Obama sent Treasury Secretary Tim Gei- thner to Capitol Hill with a thumb-in-the- eye offer, and Republicans got the message. In subsequent days, Obama has not only flatly rejected a Republican proposal that, unlike Obama’s, made concessions on tax revenue. He also has ratcheted up his demands — he now says there will be no Public Forum fiscal cliff deal without a deal on the debt ceiling as well, which he has demanded unilateral authority to control. And he has, in public, addressed Republicans as if they were unruly children in need of discipline. C M C M Y K Tuesday, December 18,2012 • The World • C3 Y K A family DILBERT night of stargazing

If things are so hectic in your household during the holidays that you can’t remember the last time you took time out for some family fun, you need FRANK AND ERNEST to remind yourself what kids really want for Christmas: quality time with family. EVERYDAY Get CHEAPSKATE family fun on the cal- endar, and once it’s there, you’ll THE BORN LOSER find yourself Mary sched- uling Hunt around it, not crossing it out. If you don’t have a calendar, make one that goes at least through New Years. Post it in a visible place so all family members can see it, even your little ones. ZITS Make it colorful and exciting. Now, make some plans. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to create wonderful times together. One idea that appeals to all ages is stargazing, dis- covering the stories of the sky. Lest you believe that stargazing is just an activ- ity for spring or summer, it’s not. You’ll want to do CLASSIC PEANUTS some homework for this event. But you’ll be amazed what the winter sky has to offer. Take a THE FAMILY CIRCUS trip to the library or look on the Internet for sites like DomeOfTheSky.com or KidsAstronomy.com, where you will find lots of stories and sky facts. Start here: The Big and Little Dippers are parts of two larger constellations known as Ursa Major and FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE Ursa Minor. The dippers, which look like ladles in the sky, are good reference points for the other con- stellations. First locate the Big Dipper. The two stars on the outside of its ladle also are called the Pointers. Follow a straight line from the Pointers upward out from the ladle to the North Star. Share the stories about ROSE IS ROSE the constellations and stars; point out other con- stellations. Make up your own stories. Enjoy the solitude, the feelings of being together under such an amazing canopy of nighttime majesty. You can view many of the stars from your yard, or a safe park or rooftop if you’re in a city — just avoid house and street- LUANN lights, if possible. The best viewing is away from city lights. If you have access to a safe country location, your results will be even better. You’ll notice that more stars become visible while you wait the half hour that it takes your eyes to fully adjust. The darker, the better for successful stargazing. Of course, you’ll need GRIZZWELLS to put together some gear. Start with a big blanket, flashlights and hot choco- late. And bundle up! Background music is important, so bring a portable player. If you can find it, “Starwatching” by The Happy Crowd (happy- crowd.com) is perfect: "What a beautiful sight ... We put our blanket out on the lawn ... and we’re star watching, what a beautiful night!” Bring notebooks so you can record each constella- MODERATELY CONFUSED KIT ’N’ CARLYLE HERMAN tion after you find it, not- ing the date, time, weath- er and any other impor- tant observations. With any luck, you’ll have such a great time you’ll want to repeat this fun family out- ing. The more nights you spend exploring the skies, the more you’ll find up there.
