3 WelcomeWelcome to the to Julythe /September August Edition of Thrussington of Thrussington Life Life Welcome to the summer edition of Thrussington Life, there is so much going on that it has been a bit of a struggle to make it all fit!! There are a few items that I would like to draw your attention to! As I am sure some of you are aware that City Football Club have acquired the Park Hill Golf Course. Last week I took the opportunity to see their plans for their new training facility , most of which looks really impressive but also I have real concerns about the A46 crossing! This is already a dangerous junction and the anticipated increase in traffic which will include team coaches concerns me greatly. Take the opportunity to see what is proposed on the Charnwood Planning Application Portal and decide for yourself if they have thought it through! The Neighbourhood Plan referendum is due shortly. A huge amount of effort has gone into the plan so please take the opportunity to vote on your village for the future. The Parish council is considering another Speedwatch campaign after the summer. Many people have concerns over speeding in the Village so now is your opportunity to help, More details in the next edition . Finally Helen & Georgia Relf are raising money for LOROS by hiking up Scafell Pike, if you are able to help them Val Brightwell has a collection box. FOUND! On Friday 20th April, I found a distinctive gold ring in the flower bed at the front of Thrussington Village Hall. If you have lost a ring and think it may be this one, then please call / message Emily on 07841 654586 VILLAGE HALL AGM Thursday 30th August 8pm in the Village Hall This is your chance to meet your committee and be able to vote in a new committee for the next year. You can also ask any questions about the hall or the committee that you want to know the answers to. Come along and have a chat and coffee and if you have never been in the hall come and have a look around and find out how we try to keep it in its good condition. Come along and volunteer to join us on the committee. 4 A Letter From Edward Argar MP

It was a real pleasure, as always, to join Thrussington residents for Skittles on the Green recently, and to enjoy a beautiful summers’ evening in one of our county’s most beautiful villages, and the very friendly welcome I always receive in the village. Skittles on the Green in Thrussington has become an annual fixture for me as your local MP since I was elected in 2015, and my recent appointment to the Government by the Prime Minister as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice won’t be changing that! While my new ministerial role brings new, different, and exciting responsibilities, my role as your MP will always be my first priority, so you can look forward to continuing to see me regularly in the village. I also wanted to use my column in this month’s Thrussington Life to highlight the huge amount of work that the Parish Council and volunteers on the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group have put in over the past few years to produce the ‘Thrussington Neighbourhood Plan - Referendum Document’. While it is rightly for village residents to decide whether to adopt the plan, and to express their views on it, what is clear to anyone who reads it is the tremendous amount of work and care that has been put in to producing this very detailed document. All those hours and hours of work, and the Plan itself, highlight the very strong commitment in Thrussington to protecting and enhancing all that makes the village so special, and I would pay tribute to all of those who have given so much of their time to the community in this important endeavor. Finally, as this edition of Thrussington Life will cover both July and August, although summer holidays still feel a long way away, I hope everyone has a pleasant summer, and I look forward to seeing many of you in the village over the summer months. As ever, if I can be of any assistance to you, if there is an issue you wish to raise, or if there is an event in the village you’d like to invite me to, please do get in touch, either by emailing: [email protected] or by writing to me at Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, , SW1A 0AA

Thrussington’s Annual Scarecrow Trail

It’s not long now until this year’s village fayre and scarecrow trail. (‘Yippee’ we hear you say!) The date is Saturday 8th September and the theme this year is SPORT! We’d love as many scarecrows as possible so please do get involved. If you don’t live in the village, we have plenty of households happy to host your creation. Are you a club that would like to make one as a group? Does your business operate nearby…why not make one and pop some business cards next to it to promote yourself? As always, there will be a prize for the winner and, of course, the scarecrow trail trophy will be yours for the year too! There won’t be an event this year on the Sunday as we are putting all our efforts into running the scarecrow trail and making the village fayre a huge success but there may well be an outdoor cinema over the summer. Do get in touch with Jo (at the shop or on [email protected]) if you’d like to be involved so that we can make sure your sporty scarecrow is on the map. The more the merrier!

SKITTLES 2018

I am writing this after a wonderful afternoon on the village green which finally saw the green very busy. We have had disappointing Friday and Saturday evenings with few teams and a low turn out of people, however today made up for that. With sun, music, skittles, food, a small bar, what more could you want and all the profits are for the village hall. The Village hall committee would like to thank everyone who helped today and special thank you’s go to Jo and Ben at the shop for all their help in making this event successful, the Blue Lion for providing our hot dogs, Sonia for spending three days helping on the bar, all the people in the skittle alley, Tom for the food today and all the helpers on the cake stall, Nicky for the face painting and also the committee for putting up the skittle run and hut and Paul for putting up the big marquee. We also thank everyone for providing the raffle prizes and everyone who bought tickets and made generous donations. Skittle winners and raffle winners will be in the September issue of T Life and also the profit for the village hall which will go towards having the drains sorted out. Sorry if I have forgotten anyone but we thank you, Bev Kearns Chair Village Hall Committee,

Thrussington Golf Thrussington at Birstall It has been a couple of years since we last played the Birstall course, and to be honest, this was a mistake. Birstall is a lovely varied Par 70 course with some very challenging holes. The course was in tip-top condition, the sun shone, and the company was good as usual. The Staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the bacon cobs are to die for. What is there not to love, if you appreciate an afternoon of social golf? To the sounds of the Great Central Railway we drove off down the first fairway, some of us (yours truly included), drove a little too close to the railway for our second shots to challenge the first green, but that is all in the game. Up Bunker Hill to the second green for oxygen and a chance to get our second wind and settle down for the afternoon. A wonderful field of 16 players, including 3 ladies, all enjoyed the course, with instructions to me to make sure we go back soon. Can I thank Jim Ludham (an ex Birstall member) for his helpful advice to all of my group on the layout of each hole as we went round. If only my golf matched his guidance. Our eventual winner was Steve Marsden with a score of 35, and our runner-up was Rob Illiffe with a score of 33. Well done to both of them Our next event will be our “Thrussington Open” to be held at Melton Golf Course on Friday 4th August 2018. We will play the 18 holes and then have a simple meal there afterwards, followed by the award of our Cup and Shield to the winners. If you are interested in joining us the please contact me as below. A massive thank you to all those who came and supported us on our fund-raising Garden/Gateaux afternoon. The weather was perfect; any hotter and the gateaux would have flowed, the cakes sagged and the plants wilted. We are still sorting out some of the costs but about £1000 was raised which will be used for equipment & floral displays around the village.

Many thanks are extended to all those who generously gave their time helping on the day, to those who came and supported us and to those who couldn’t make it but gave a donation. Thanks also to Ken Bragg for allowing us to use his green- house and part of his garden, to David West of Road Nurseries, , for planting our summer displays around the village, to Mark Tay- lor for displaying his chainsaw carvings and to those who very generously donated cakes and raffle prizes.

Special thanks to David & Carol Gamble for hosting this event and providing such a lovely garden for us all to enjoy.

20 Your village! Your future! Your vote! Thrussington Neighbourhood Plan Update Dear All Goods news After more than 30 months of hard work, we are delighted to tell you that your Neighbourhood Plan has been approved by all the necessary official bodies (further details below*) and it’s nearly time for you to vote so that the plan becomes legal and effective! Details of the final plan can be found on the village website at www.thrussingtonvillage.org.uk When will the vote take place? Everyone will soon receive a polling card. At the time of writing a polling date has not been confirmed but is expected to be towards the end of July or the first week of August. PLEASE VOTE!! Why is the Neighbourhood Plan important for our village? What is it and why does it matter? The Neighbourhood Plan is a legal document which sits alongside the national and local plans. It gives us rights when planning and development decisions are taken and it is designed to preserve and protect the vibrancy, sustainability, character, assets, businesses and community of our village. It also contains aspirations for enhancements to the village in the future. Charnwood Borough Council and the Parish Council will refer to this plan for all future planning decisions that impact our village. As residents we can also rely on and refer to this plan when considering any planning and development matters in our village. Why do we need to vote? In order for the Neighbourhood Plan to become official and legally binding, a vote or “public referendum” is required by residents of the village with a majority vote. There is no minimum number of votes required simply a majority ruling. We need as many people to vote as possible to ensure that the plan becomes a live and legal document. What happens next and how will it work? We will publish a date for the referendum by the end of June. The public referendum will be organised by Charnwood and voting will be at the Village Hall. We will inform you of the date and encourage you all to vote. If you are unable to make it to the Village Hall in person, it will be possible to make alternative arrangements and vote by post / by Proxy – full details can be found at https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ where_and_how_you_can_vote If you have any questions or queries regarding the Neighbourhood Plan we will do our best to answer them. Please contact us at the following email address [email protected] Finally a big thank you to all those who made this happen and to all our village residents for your feedback and participation along the way. The Neighbourhood Plan Working Group.

*The consultation period for the Plan finished at the end of February. A number of responses were received from various statutory bodies and, along with the referendum copy of the plan, have been published on the web site (www.thrussingtonvillage.org.uk). Charnwood Borough Council appointed an examiner who visited the Parish in March. He completed his report April 19th and recommended that we progress to a public referendum after incorporating his recommendations. This has been completed and Charnwood Borough Council have discussed a date with the Electoral Officers. 21 22 23 24 Thrussington Gospel Choir Event

29 Wreake Drive, , Leicester, LE7 4YZ 30 WI REPORT FOR JULY 2018

Numbers at the June meeting were down, as seven apologies for absence had been received. Members were told that the Darts Team had won their match against Barkby and by 5 games to 2! Their next match, against Barsby, will be on 26 June at the Harborough Pub in Melton, leaving the Green at 7pm. Sue Bradshaw has offered to drive. The team is Janet Wheeler, Maria Payne, Di Chapman and Janet Heath.

The Outing on 12thJuly will be to Foxton Locks, leaving the Green at 10.30 am. Drivers: Sue Bradshaw, Janet Heath, Margaret Boulton and Anne Guest. Passengers to contribute £2 each towards petrol to their driver. Drivers to park in the Short Stay car park, which is nearer the Locks. There are various choices for food in the restaurant.. Contact Sue, if you were not at the meeting, to put your name down for the outing.

Our speaker was John Noble on The Journey of a Letter. We had not only the journey of a letter but also the journey of John's fascinating life! His talk was a positive whirlwind of enthusiastic stories and facts about his life as a postman and as a charity fund raiser, including life style tips, good food choices and running. John has been a postman for 42 years and is currently the most senior postman in Leicester. He clearly loves his job and takes a great pride in all aspects of delivering letters to the 536 houses on his round in Leicester. He covers 9 miles each day and is an extremely fit and active man, with a very cheerful personality. He runs for charity and in 2015 had the honour to be chosen - (following his application, in 100 words, “Why I should be a Torch Bearer”) - as one of the Olympic Torch Bearers when the Olympic Torch came to Leicestershire

Many sorting offices (like Campbell Street in Leicester) have been closed and, nowadays, letters in Leicestershire are collected locally and sent to the central Sorting Office in Northampton! to be sorted and distributed. Everything is mechanised but standards, according to John, are slipping, with postmen not always wearing the proper uniform, or taking the same pride in their job which John displays. He really cares about every aspect of his job and this shone through his talk.
