Photojournalism Photojournalism
Photojournalism For this section, we'll be looking at photojournalism's impact on shaping people's opinions of the news & world events. Photojournalism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. Photojournalists must be well informed and knowledgeable about events happening right outside their door. They deliver news in a creative format that is not only informative, but also entertaining. Timeliness The images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events. Objectivity The situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone. Narrative The images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to audiences. Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter, but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (e.g., physical danger, weather, crowds, physical access). -

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Interview for Not Making It Clear That He Wasn't the Father of the Baby She Miscarried Last May
Love's Story The combative singer-actress embarks on a legal skirmish with her record label that may change what it means to be a rock star. Oh, and she also has some choice words about her late husband's bandmates, her newfound ancestry, Russell Crowe, Angelina Jolie... By Holly Millea | Mar 25, 2002 Image credit: Courtney Love Photographs by Jean Baptiste Mondino COURTNEY LOVE IS IN A LIMOUSINE TAKING HER FROM Los Angeles to Desert Hot Springs on a detox mission. "I've been on a bit of a bender after 9/11," she admits. "I've got a lot of s--- in me. I weigh 147 pounds." Which is why she's checking into the We Care colonic spa for five days of fasting. Slumped low in the seat, the 37-year-old actress and lead singer of Hole is wearing baggy faded jeans, a brown pilled sweater, and Birkenstock sandals, her pink toenails twinkling with rhinestones. On her head is a wool knit hat - 1 - that looks like something she found on the street. Last night she sat for three hours while her auburn hair extensions were unglued and cut out. "See?" Love says, pulling the cap off. "I look like a Dr. Seuss character on chemo." She does. Her hair is short and tufty and sticking out in all directions. It's a disaster. Love smiles a sad, self-conscious smile and covers up again. Lighting a cigarette, she asks, "Why are we doing this story? I don't have a record or a movie to promote. -

1 Who Brings the Funny? 3 Mirroring the Political Climate: Satire in History
Notes 1 Who Brings the Funny? 1 . Obscenity, incitement to violence, and threatening the life of the president are several examples of restrictions on expression. 2 . There have been several cases of threats against political cartoonists and comedians made by Islamic extremists who felt their religion was being mocked. These examples include (but are not limited to) the Danish political cartoonist who drew a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, the creators of South Park who pretended to, and David Letterman who mocked Al Qaida. 3 Mirroring the Political Climate: Satire in History 1 . I urge readers to review K. J. Dover’s (1974) and Jeffrey Henderson’s (1980) work on Aristophanes, and see Peter Green (1974) and Susanna Morton Braund (2004). Other work on Juvenal includes texts by Gilbert Highet (1960) and J. P. Sullivan (1963). I have also been directed by very smart people to Ralph M. Rosen, Making Mockery: The Poetics of Ancient Satire, (New York: Oxford University Press, 2 0 0 7 ) . 2 . Apparently, the “definitive” Pope prose is found in the volume edited by Ault and Cowler (Oxford: Blackwell, 1936–1986), and the “definitive” text for Gay’s poetry is edited by Dearing (Oxford: Clarendon, 1974). 3. The best collection from Swift comes from Cambridge Press: English Political Writings 1711–1714, edited by Goldgar (2008). Thanks to Dr. Sharon Harrow for her assistance in finding this authoritative resource. 4 . The most authoritative biographies of Franklin are from Isaacson (2003) and Brands (2002), and I recommend readers look to these two authors for more information on one of the most fascinating of our founding fathers. -

‘An evaluation of Flickr’s distributed classification system, from the perspective of its members, and as an image retrieval tool in comparison with a controlled vocabulary’ A dissertation submitted for an MA in: Information Services Management London Metropolitan University September 2008 By Samuel Piker Abstract The profusion of digital images made available online presents a new challenge for image indexing. Images have always been problematic to describe and catalogue due to lack of inherent textual data and ambiguity of meaning. Because professionally- applied metadata is not practical for most open, web-based collections a solution has been sought in the form of tags, simple keywords that can be attached to an image by any web user. Together tags form a flat structure known as distributed classification, or more popularly as a folksonomy. This research follows the debate surrounding folksonomies and aims to fill the gaps in understanding of why people tag and how effective they find them for searching, using the photo-sharing website Flickr as the focus. Open-ended questionnaires were sent out to members of the site who use tags, with the opportunity to post comments to an online discussion space. The other key gap identified in the literature is a systematic comparison between a tag-based system and a more traditional controlled vocabulary, to test out the claims made regarding tagging’s suitability for searching and browsing. For this purpose Flickr has been compared with Getty Images using a series of test themes. The small number of people who replied to the questionnaire gave detailed answers that confirmed several of the assertions made about tags: they are accepted despite their flaws (sloppiness and potential for inaccuracy) because they serve their purpose to a satisfactory level. -
The Angelina Jolie Effect: How High Celebrity
Evans et al. Breast Cancer Research 2014, 16:442 http://breast-cancer-research.com/content/16/5/442 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access The Angelina Jolie effect: how high celebrity profile can have a major impact on provision of cancer related services D Gareth R Evans1,2,14*†, Julian Barwell3†, Diana M Eccles4, Amanda Collins4, Louise Izatt5, Chris Jacobs5, Alan Donaldson6, Angela F Brady7, Andrew Cuthbert8, Rachel Harrison9, Sue Thomas10, Anthony Howell1, The FH02 Study Group, RGC teams, Zosia Miedzybrodzka11,12 and Alex Murray13 Abstract Introduction: It is frequent for news items to lead to a short lived temporary increase in interest in a particular health related service, however it is rare for this to have a long lasting effect. In 2013, in the UK in particular, there has been unprecedented publicity in hereditary breast cancer, with Angelina Jolie’s decision to have genetic testing for the BRCA1 gene and subsequently undergo risk reducing mastectomy (RRM), and a pre-release of the NICE guidelines on familial breast cancer in January and their final release on 26th June. The release of NICE guidelines created a lot of publicity over the potential for use of chemoprevention using tamoxifen or raloxifene. However, the longest lasting news story was the release of details of film actress Angelina Jolie’s genetic test and surgery. Methods: To assess the potential effects of the ‘Angelina Jolie’ effect, referral data specific to breast cancer family history was obtained from around the UK for the years 2012 and 2013. A consortium of over 30 breast cancer family history clinics that have contributed to two research studies on early breast surveillance were asked to participate as well as 10 genetics centres. -
