Dear Friends Poppy (8) I have just been invited to buy early and have a cheaper Christmas tree – and as I write, it is still early November! They say it will be fine if I pop it in a bucket and leave it outside until I want it. That may seem a bit forward, but each of you this December already has a gift as we approach the Christmas Season. It isn’t gift wrapped, and you won’t find it under your tree. It came to you quite unexpectedly when you reached a certain age. You may never have realised that it had arrived at all until you were first invited to use it. It is your vote. Of course, most of us would think of our vote not as a gift but as a right. But that right had to be won. It comes to you as a gift from those who had to request, lobby, demand and fight for it. They placed it in your hands, at times at the cost of their lives. It is worth thinking about that, if voting seems a pointless chore. What the gift of a vote gives you is a choice. It may be an imperfect and difficult choice, but that is what it is. Unfortunately, and probably from experience, different parties expect us to make our choice according to our own exclusive advantage. They target us very specifically with little and great inducements to tempt us to give them our gift. We can choose to remember that this precious gift came to us without cost. We can choose to give it not just to our narrow material advantage, but for the Common Good, for a more cohesive society, a more inclusive caring. We can make our gift a gift for others, not just for ourselves, we can make it something to share. None of which will have made deciding any simpler, but the choice we will have made may just, we hope, bring a Happier Christmas. God had a gift in his Son, and God chose to give his Son to us, not for his happiness, but for ours. Happy Christmas! 5

BeneficeNewsXmas19.indd 8 04/12/2019 16:59:00 Cerne Abbas Village Hall (BOOKINGS 07508 039280, [email protected]) You will almost certainly have heard the sad news of the death of David Evans, our Chair since the new hall opened in May 2006. David has been a good friend and strong advocate for the hall and we will all miss his wise guidance. The hall consequently needs a new Chair as a matt er of urgency. In the interim the Secretary, George Morti mer, has assumed the additi onal role of acti ng Chair. However, this situati on is not desirable or sustainable except as a temporary measure. The positi on of the Chair is supported by a strong team who manage the hall on a daily basis, and an acti ve hall committ ee. The role is essenti ally to oversee the evolving directi on of the future of the hall and is not especially demanding on one’s ti me. The hall has seen signifi cant changes since its build, not least in the last year. It is now almost certainly the best of its kind in West Dorset for the modern faciliti es it provides, and its ‘green’ credenti als are unrivalled. We need to improve our income and therefore marketi ng will be a key policy for the incoming Chair. One opti on, of course, is for George to off er to become the Chair and handover his role as Secretary. Either are rewarding roles and will appeal to anyone with an interest in working for the future of this vital local community asset, much used by all our clubs and societi es and many outside users as well. John Lee or George Morti mer are available at any ti me if you want to know more about being Chair or Secretary, roles vital to the conti nued success of a community asset we all use, admire and enjoy.

Coff ee, cake and chat (CONTACT Moira Pinder 341255) The next two coff ee mornings will be held on Wednesday 8th January and Wednesday 5th February. Please note that 8th January is a departure from our usual fi rst Wednesday in the month policy, but New Year’s Day may not be appropriate for a coff ee morning! As usual the venue will be St Mary’s Church and the ti me 10.30am to 12 noon. A warm welcome is extended to all to join in this friendly social event. For further informati on or to arrange transport please contact Moira as above.

Cerne Abbas Society for Horti culture (CONTACT Gill Ringrose 341583) There is no meeti ng in December but we would remind all our members that CASH AGM and Social event is on Tuesday 14th January. The AGM will begin at 7.30pm followed by drinks and bites (all contributi ons gratefully received). The CASH committ ee wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Good New Year. 9

with the Village Hall equipment. The Village Tilly (7) Hall Committee is working hard to remedy the situation so that future users do not experience the same problems. As a consequence, CAVC have decided to disband the current committee. Money from the existing account will go to Cerne Abbas First School, Scouts, NOW and Restore Support Network. A modest sum will be available, until 1st April 2020, for anyone who wishes to take up the reins. This could be in the same format or something different. Please contact CAVC by email if you have any questions. The current committee would like to thank you for your interest and support. Cerne Abbas Historical Society (CONTACT Mike Clark 341269, [email protected]) The next CAHS meeting is the AGM on Thursday 23rd January at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. In addition, if you didn’t have a chance to view the 1919 Autumn Exhibition in the church, or want the opportunity to see it again, it will be on display in the Village Hall from 5pm on the day of the AGM and again the day after on the morning of Friday 24th January from 10am until lunchtime. You will be able to renew your membership, or join the Society at these times as well as during the AGM, which is a social event after the formal business of the meeting has been concluded. Cerne Abbas Theatre Club (CONTACT Yvonne 341421, or Ron and Christine342072 ) BUDDY HOLLY on Friday 17th January at the Octagon Theatre Yeovil. Cost £37 (£1 extra for non-members). TO ORDER TICKETS please put your cheque in a sealed envelope with your name, telephone number, the name of the show and the number of tickets required on the front and leave this at the Cerne Abbas Village Store. BeneficeNewsXmas19.indd 12 04/12/2019 16:59:04 Other village news WAR MEMORIAL GREEN - DOG FOULING In recent weeks there has been a spate of dog fouling on the war memorial green outside St Mary’s church. All dog owners are requested to respect the sanctity of this area in particular and ensure that, even inadvertently, they are not the cause of these desecrating and disheartening episodes. NEW BENCH FOR CERNE ABBAS WATER MEADOWS The health benefits of regular walks are well known and an important contributor to the Wellness campaign of the NHS. As a result of a grant from Wessex Water, the Cerne Abbas Water Meadows Trust has been able to purchase a new bench made from recycled plastic. This has been placed at a halfway point in the path around the meadow so that people can take a short rest to admire the peace and beauty of this important part of our agricultural heritage. A group of volunteers led by Roy Burnham are now in the process of registering as a Charity and agreeing a lease with Cognatum, the landowner, to manage the meadows for the future enjoyment of visitors. If you would like to become a part of the regular Water Meadows maintenance team please get in touch with Roy. Also planned in 2020 is a tree planting project in the meadows Adrian Chick from Wessex Water when we will be offering everyone presenting the donation for the new a chance to donate a tree. More bench to Roy and other Cerne Abbas information in a future newsletter. residents. WASSAIL AND EPIPHANY PARTY AT THE VICARAGE on Sunday 5th January at 5pm. Arrive before 5pm (aim for 4.45pm) as we will start at 5pm sharp. Bring a noisemaker for The Great Commotion. We will toast the apple trees with toast and mulled cider (apple juice for children), celebrate the arrival of the kings (crib figures from the church), and then share epiphany cakes from around the world. Please contact Jane Still 07823( 778758) if you’d like to contribute cider or an epiphany cake or pastry (recipes available). All welcome. CHRISTMAS CARD SERVICE BY CERNE VALLEY CUB SCOUTS Hopefully you will have seen some Christmas Post Boxes around the village already. Cerne Valley Cub Scouts decided they would like to post your Christmas cards for you around Cerne Abbas village for free as a community action. The Cubs made the post boxes and they wrote letters to the shop, church, surgery and Village Hall to ask if they could place their Christmas Post boxes at those locations. If you haven’t already taken advantage of this service yet, please do so quickly as last collection is on Sunday 15th December. The Cub Scouts will deliver as many cards as possible on Monday 16th December during their Cub Scout meeting and any remaining cards will be 13

H S Cerne Valley NEWS Cerne Valley Parish Council (CONTACT Wayne Lewin, Clerk, 07419 136735, [email protected]) DEAR PARISHIONERS From all your Councillors, may we wish you a very Happy Christmas. This is generally a fairly quiet ti me for the Parish Council. MINOR MAINTENANCE is being carried out in the Play Park and the Kett le Bridge Lane Car Park. You may also see new signage at the Car Park. This should help the visitors when they arrive in the village. A NEW INFORMATION BOARD at the Giant’s View Car Park is well under way. Many thanks to all those involved in its design. A PLANNING APPLICATION has been received for fi ve new dwellings on Duck Street. The Parish Council will hold a meeti ng soon so please check the noti ceboards and website for further details. RIVER MAINTENANCE It is a good ti me to remind all those riparian owners to maintain your part of the river. Failure to do so may cause issues further up and down stream. THE ABBEY STREET DROPPED CURB has been approved. This will enable those with mobility diffi culti es to access to the Church more easily. YOU WILL SEE SOME TREE WORKS in the burial ground in the New Year. This is routi ne as recommendati ons from the recent inspecti on. If you wish to reserve a plot please let me know. OUR NEXT MEETING is on Thursday 9th January in Godmanstone Village Hall. 15

AnnaBDesigns.indd 1 04/06/2018 14:49:52 Cerne Abbas Surgery (APPOINTMENTS 341666) Cerne Abbas Surgery has recently installed a new telephone system that will provide more support to our pati ents and our staff . When you telephone, you will be off ered a list of opti ons to put you through to the correct team. We have also introduced call recording and a call ’queue’ so you will know that your call will be answered. We are already feeling the benefi ts of the system and hope that our pati ents prefer it too. If you are over 65 you are enti tled to a free fl u vaccinati on. If you haven’t yet had one this year but would like to, please call the surgery to make an appointment. There has been a shortage of vaccines for eligible children and we are only able to order these in small numbers: again, please contact the surgery. We would to inform our pati ents of our opening hours over the festi ve season. We are closed on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th December, and on Wednesday 1st January. Otherwise we are open as usual. Our dispensary team request that you only order your normal supply of medicati on over Christmas. Finally, thank you to everyone who supports the surgery, including the pati ent group, volunteer drivers and of course the fantasti c staff team for helping provide an amazing service to all the pati ents. Merry Christmas! Cerne Abbas CE VC First School (CONTACT offi [email protected] or 341319) SCHOOL IN THE PAST The second half of term has been busy in the lead up to Christmas. A BIG thanks to everyone who came to our event ‘Your School, Your Village Our Future’. We were so pleased that so many people att ended to fi nd out a litt le bit about our school and our idea for a project that involves the community helping us. We were inspired by the 1919 events and want to develop a project that involves fi nding out more about the history of our school. What was it like to go to school when it opened? What were teachers like in the early 1900s? What were the classrooms like? What was the teaching like? What was it like to be a child at the school? Some people have kindly off ered to be interviewed about their experiences here, but if anyone else (even if you couldn’t att end the event) can help us, please get in touch via phone or email (as above). CAREERS We also ask your help with our Careers Week. If you have a profession that you would be happy to talk to our children about, particularly an unusual one, if you can offer your services please get in touch. TRIPS Our curriculum continues to be filled with exciting learning opportunities for the children. Visits this term have involved meeting and hearing the children’s author Michael Rosen, a trip to Pizza Express to make, cook (and eat) pizza and we are now looking forward to a whole school trip to ‘The Journey to the Stable’ event at The United Church in Dorchester. NATIVITY By the time you read this, we will have had the Cerne Abbas Christmas Fair with the children singing carols. We will be performing our Christmas Nativity ‘Hey Ewe’, both on Tuesday 17th December at 2pm and Wednesday 18th December at 6pm on church. Everyone is welcome so please join us to get into the Christmas mood. GOVERNOR Cerne Abbas School is looking for a new Local Authority Governor to join the Governing Body. A LA Governor is usually someone not directly connected with the school who can bring an outside perspective to the GB and is appointed via the LA. We are particularly interested in anyone who has an interest in finance - you don't need to be an expert or qualified just an interest would be helpful. The GB meets every 2 months in the evenings and committee meetings take place in between at times to suit the members. If you are interested and would like to find out more, please contact the school - 01300 341319 or [email protected] On behalf of all at Cerne Abbas CE VC First School, we wish you a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. Cerne Valley Cricket Club (CONTACT Philip Spray 341603, [email protected]) At the Cerne Valley Cricket Club’s AGM in November, the Chairman Mark Downey was re-elected, and Edward Gallia returned to the committee as the club’s Co- ordinator of Youth Cricket. The Chairman thanked John Charman, who is standing down from the main committee after years of valuable service. John organised and ran the North Somerset tour for nearly a decade and he set up and has been in charge of the monthly 100 Club which has brought in useful revenue that has helped to pay for CVCC’s ever-increasing insurance bill. The Chairman also outlined plans for more fund-raising in 2020 which will include a sponsored walk, a sponsored cycle trip to Switzerland and a post- season dinner/dance. 100 CLUB WINNERS for October and November were Dave Portch, Peter Downton, Jamie Best, Jeremy Parkinson-Smith, Jane Portch and John Killinger. 20

BeneficeNewsXmas19.indd 20 04/12/2019 16:59:21 Short Mat Bowls (CONTACT Eugene and June Balbinski 341714, [email protected]) Cerne’s Yeovil and District team, newly returned to Division 1, are doing well, having gained 16 points from five matches (just over 50%). Recent results include a 6-0 home win against Keinton, a great 3-3 draw away against Hazelwoods, and two hard earned points in a 2-4 defeat at Templecombe. Cerne Abbots in Division 3 of the Blackmore Vale League won 18 points from six matches. Recent results include a 6-0 home win against Camelot, a 0-6 away defeat against Sturfries and a 2-4 home loss to Thornford Swifts. Cerne Giants in Division 1 of the Blackmore Vale League aren’t doing quite as well, having won 10 points from four matches. Giants came away with just two points from two trips to Hazelbury Bryan with a 2-4 defeat against Hazelnuts and a whacking 0-6 defeat (74 shots to 15) against champions Hazelberries. However, they managed to win 6-0 against Okeleaves, but in a very tight finish against Stalbridge Falcons, they lost 2-4 (37 shots to 38). This year’s Club Singles was played in mid-November. As usual it was an achievement to qualify for the semi-finals. June Balbinski was the only qualifier on 100%. Next best was husband Eugene, followed by Mike Pedrick, qualifying for the 12th year in succession. Carol Hann, playing the Singles for the first time, was Cerne Valley Young People Trust just edged out by Pairs partner Ivor Hunt on shot difference. In the semi-finals Ivor (CONTACT Helen Smith 341995) did well to beat multi-winner June and reach the final for the first time. Current holder Eugene beat Mike for the second time on the day. Eugene beat Ivor 8-3 in the final to become one of just two players to win the trophy three times. Artsreach (CONTACT Eleanor Gallia 07779 299541, www.artsreach.co.uk) PROTEIN DANCE – THE LITTLE PRINCE at Cerne Abbas Village Hall on Saturday 25th January, 2.30pm. This will be a dance show based on the world famous story by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The Little Prince is brought to life using Protein’s award-winning mix of dance, humour and spoken word, inviting us to look at the world through one’s heart and to reconnect with our inner child. Suitable for families and children, young and old. For tickets (£6, £5 u18s, £20 family of four), contact Eleanor (as above) or Jane Still on07823 778758. BeneficeNewsXmas19.indd 29 04/12/2019 16:59:30 Thanks, lett ers and other SNIPPETS THE OBSERVANT (DOG) WALKER Lost items and errant cows seem to be the theme this month… and mud, plenty of it everywhere! The rain has certainly made a mess along the majority of paths. Gloves, leads and this month, glasses, have been dropped on walks with their owners keen to retrieve them. Success has been 100% for the two pairs of glasses with the help of social media messages to other walkers and a careful retracing of steps. Dropping found items into Cerne Abbas Stores, where there is a lost property box, is a good idea. I have one pair of black woollen gloves in my safe keeping, washed and dried, having been dropped on the corner of Back Lane and Piddle Lane. A key rule for the countryside is to leave gates as you fi nd them! A herd of cows with Mr Charolais Bull loved their visit to Beevoir and munched their way around ‘the monk’s herb garden’, the humps and hollows, before being escorted back to the Simsay fi eld and ulti mately back to the hill! Let’s hope for colder but brighter weather for our Christmas walks! DO YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN ALL THINGS HOLISTIC, ALTERNATIVE, VIBRATIONAL AND ENERGETIC BASED? Maria Baggaley invites you to pop in for a cuppa and a chat about all these ‘things’ on Tuesday 28th January (open all day). You may be very experienced or you may have no experience, but you would like to discover more. Examples of subjects that could be covered are reiki; refl exology; meditati on; working with angels; understanding spirit; and balancing chakras. Look out for the noti ces in the usual places. WELL-BEING SUPPORT FOR DORSET FARMERS Some farmers and rural workers can become very socially isolated and with a busy business to run they fi nd it diffi cult to fi nd the ti me to go to their doctors or talk with others. There are some excellent organisati ons who can off er Molly (8) help and support to farmers and rural workers who are struggling, such as the Farm Community Network (FCN). They have a team of volunteers in Dorset, many of whom are farmers themselves, so they understand the problems faced in the agricultural industry. If you or 30

GIANT FESTIVAL A number of events are already pencilled in for the Giant Festi val. Some new events have been off ered, and people who gave talks last year have ideas of other topics they would like to cover. The main limit is the need for admin help beforehand and providing food and drink (mainly cake and hot drinks) for the events. There will be two chances for people to gather, hear what is going on, and off er help, both on Thursday 9th January. The fi rst is a coff ee morning in St Mary’s, Cerne Abbas at 10.30am and the second is meeti ng for a drink in the Royal Oak at 6.30pm the same day.
