    Malibu 90265 Introduction by Taylor Coffman FROM THE SANTA MONICA PIER, it’s a six-mile drive up Pacific Coast Highway to Tuna Canyon Road. Not far along this northwest-to- westerly route lies the site of the Beach House, as William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies called their grand mansion of the 1920s and ’30s, once the film colony’s most palatial home. Past that, in Pacific Palisades, lies the Bel-Air Bay Club; and then PCH reaches Sunset Boulevard, the world’s only street so-named. On the ocean side is the fish restaurant known as Gladstone’s Malibu. But it’s a false start: the border of that famous town lies almost a mile ahead still. Thelma Todd’s house and the section of Pacific Palisades called Castellammare are next; tucked away nearby, invisible from the main road, is the Getty Villa (J. Paul Getty greatly admired Hearst). Then comes the more working-class enclave of Sunset Mesa, or Parker Mesa. Right past it is the last part of what, overall, amounts to outlying Los Angeles and its coveted Westside, namely, the place where Topanga Canyon Boulevard reaches Topanga State Beach, once a Bohemian seaside haunt but now a bittersweet memory. Go another half mile, past the City of Malibu sign, and watch for a larger sign next to Tuna Canyon Road. It announces “Malibu 27 Miles of Scenic Beauty.” Years ago, in this same spirit of local pride, the old Malibu Township was often said to extend for twenty-six miles. In reality, twenty-nine miles (and even closer to thirty) is more like it in embracing the total Malibu coastline, the long shorefront of what I like to call greater Malibu, the storied land of postal ZIP code 90265.

    AUTHOR’S COPY | AUTORENEXEMPLAR Revisiting cyberfeminism SUSANNA PAASONEN E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the early 1990s, cyberfeminism surfaced as an arena for critical analyses of the inter-connections of gender and new technology Ϫ especially so in the context of the internet, which was then emerging as something of a “mass-medium”. Scholars, activists and artists interested in media technol- ogy and its gendered underpinnings formed networks and groups. Conse- quently, they attached altering sets of meaning to the term cyberfeminism that ranged in their take on, and identifications with feminism. Cyberfemi- nist activities began to fade in the early 2000s and the term has since been used by some as synonymous with feminist studies of new media Ϫ yet much is also lost in such a conflation. This article investigates the histories of cyberfeminism from two interconnecting perspectives. First, it addresses the meanings of the prefix “cyber” in cyberfeminism. Second, it asks what kinds of critical and analytical positions cyberfeminist networks, events, projects and publications have entailed. Through these two perspectives, the article addresses the appeal and attraction of cyberfeminism and poses some tentative explanations for its appeal fading and for cyberfeminist activities being channelled into other networks and practiced under dif- ferent names. Art Nouveau and Politics in the Dawn of Globalisation Japanese Aesthetics and Gustav Klimt: In Pursuit of a New Voice Svitlana Shiells Abstract At the end of the nineteenth century, Japonisme—an artistic lingua franca—became one of the most organic, overarching components of Gustav Klimt’s new art. This paper draws parallels between Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Sonja Knips and It ō Jakuch ū’s print Golden Pheasant and Bamboo in Snow . The discovery of an unexpectedly close dialogue between Klimt and Jakuch ū and the striking similarity of the formal language of the two works supports the paper’s thesis that It ō Jakuch ū’s print is the primary source of influence behind the conception and execution of the portrait and, by extension, that Klimt’s engagement with Japanese stimuli is one of the main engines behind his creative pursuit, starting at the end of the 1890s. This discovery challenges preconceived notions and existing concepts and illustrates the impossibility of understanding Klimt’s heritage comprehensively and adequately without examining the role of Japonisme in it. According to Hermann Bahr, the Viennese encountered the presence of “Japonisme in all the arts,” which were “impossible to understand without bearing in mind the influence of Japanese art.” 1 Japonisme indeed became a Zeitgeist in fin de siècle Vienna and, in the visual arts, Gustav Klimt was its main advocate.

    of formalist distance upon which modernists had relied for understanding the world. Critics increasingly pointed to a correspondence between the formal properties of 1960s art and the nature of the radically changing world that sur- rounded them. In fact formalism, the commitment to prior- itizing formal qualities of a work of art over its content, was being transformed in these years into a means of discovering content. Leo Steinberg described Rauschenberg’s work as “flat- bed painting,” one of the lasting critical metaphors invented 1 in response to the art of the immediate post-World War II Discovering the Contemporary period.5 The collisions across the surface of Rosenquist’s painting and the collection of materials on Rauschenberg’s surfaces were being viewed as models for a new form of realism, one that captured the relationships between people and things in the world outside the studio.     The Evolution of Expressionism In Turn-of-the-Century Vienna: Klirnt and Schiele Stephan Kleinschuster May 6, 1997 AR592 1 1 Until 1897, Classicism in Viennese high art had served as a mimetic construct of the elite society who were both art's staunchest supporters and the purveyors of moral and philosophical values that served as it's staple of judgment. In the following years, from 1898 to 1918, were revolutions of both natures, political and philosophical. The artistic transformation from the Classicism of the Habsburg Monarchy to the expressionism of the Cafe "Nihilism" could be seen most obviously in two of Vienna's foremost artists of the time, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the works of these two artists who seem to crystallize the moral, social, political, and artistic upheaval of early Twentieth Century Vienna. It lS fitting that Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele died six months from one another, both of the Spanish influenza, and both in 1918. It is important to note that even though stylistic variables call for their ultimate contrast, they loved and admired one another, and they both stood for the values that defined Secessionism. Their proximity in philosophy makes it all the more profound to discover their differences. In Klimt came classical objectivity housed in a contemporary conceptual framework. In Schiele came the shift to brutal subjectivity that pushed the limits of this framework. Even though, as will be discussed, the similarity of the subject matter seems to remain a constant, the execution becomes the variable upon which the change becomes dependent.

    Article Dear Sister Artist: Activating Feminist Art Letters and Ephemera in the Archive Kathy Carbone ABSTRACT The 1970s Feminist Art movement continues to serve as fertile ground for contemporary feminist inquiry, knowledge sharing, and art practice. The CalArts Feminist Art Program (1971–1975) played an influential role in this movement and today, traces of the Feminist Art Program reside in the CalArts Institute Archives’ Feminist Art Materials Collection. Through a series of short interrelated archives stories, this paper explores some of the ways in which women responded to and engaged the Collection, especially a series of letters, for feminist projects at CalArts and the Women’s Art Library at Goldsmiths, University of London over the period of one year (2017–2018). The paper contemplates the archive as a conduit and locus for current day feminist identifications, meaning- making, exchange, and resistance and argues that activating and sharing—caring for—the archive’s feminist art histories is a crucial thing to be done: it is feminism-in-action that not only keeps this work on the table but it can also give strength and definition to being a feminist and an artist. Galerie Lelong and P·P·O·W have a history of collaboration and have co-represented Carolee Schneemann since 2017. This will be the first time the two artists are shown together in direct dialogue, an exhibition Schneemann proposed during the last year of her life. In works such as Mendieta’s Volcán (1979) and Schneemann’s Study for Up To and Including Her Limits (1973), both artists harnessed physical action to root themselves into the earth, establishing their ties to the earth and asserting bodily agency in the face of societal restraints and repression. Both artists identified as painters prior to activating their bodies as material; Mendieta received a MA in painting from the University of Iowa in 1972, and Schneemann received an MFA from the University of Illinois in 1961.
