Alexander Zverev (St. Petersburg) and Karen Khachanov (Chengdu) of #NextGen each won a title last fall. Medvedev is playing in his first ATP final after saving a match point against Dudi Sela to win his first semi-final. o #NextGen: Top 200 players born in 1996 or later En route to the final, Medvedev did not face a player in the Top 60 of the Emirates ATP Rankings. That changes Sunday when he meets the highest-ranked opponent of his young career. Bautista Agut, the World No. 14, is appearing in his fifth final of the last 52 weeks and seventh since October 2015. He fell in the 2013 Chennai final to Janko Tipsarevic, who was ranked ninth at the time. The doubles final features four Indians for the first time in the tournament’s 22-year history. Los Cabos champions Purav Raja and Divij Sharan face countrymen Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. The winners will follow in the footsteps of fellow Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, who teamed for five Chennai titles. Paes added a sixth in 2012 with Tipsarevic. Just ask Aircel Chennai Open semi-finalists Daniil Medvedev, Dudi Sela and Benoit Paire, none of whom played a tour- level championship match in 2016. They are all one win from doing so this week. In his first ATP semi, the 20-year-old Medvedev meets Sela, who is bidding for his first final since 2014 Atlanta. The fifth-seeded Paire challenges No. 2 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in a rematch of the 2013 Aircel Chennai Open semi-finals. Bautista Agut defeated Paire in three sets four years ago and has never lost to the Frenchman in seven career meetings. The Spaniard reached a career-high four finals in 2016, winning titles at Auckland and Sofia during the first five weeks of the season. Also on Stadium Court, No. 4 seeds Nicholas Monroe and Artem Sitak meet Indians Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in a doubles semi-final. Los Cabos champions Purav Raja and Divij Sharan, another All-Indian team, await in the final. If Bopanna and Nedunchezhiyan win on Saturday, they will ensure the first Chennai doubles final to feature four players from India.
