message CHAIRMAN Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar

Dear Fellow Members and Residents, Salam sejahtera. First and foremost, I wish to take this opportunity to convey my sincere apprecia- tion to those members who attended our 31st AGM held on Saturday, 12 May 2018 at PKK Tuanku Bainun and voted in the new Execu- tive Committee for the 2018-20 term. The year 2018 was indeed an exciting year thus far. Just three days prior to the AGM, voted in a new Government and TTDI being in the parliamentary constituency, welcomed our new MP YB Puan . In an atmosphere of euphoria in the spirit of “Malaysia Baru” and to our delight, YB Hannah dropped by the AGM where she delivered a inspiring speech and announced her full support to saving Taman Rimba Kiara with a personal donation oRM10,000.00 towards the “Save Taman Rimba Kiara” Fund. To many long-term residents, TTDI holds a very special place in our hearts. This is our “kampong”. Our children were born, bred and grew up here; they went to school and made friends here, and some of them met, fell in love and got married here. What we are seeing nowadays are more families celebrating and enjoying festivities more in TTDI rather than in kampongs which involves making the mad rush and exodus out of the city. Ladies and gentlemen, I must say this again. This is our “kampong” and we must claim and take ownership of it. We must not only protect and maintain the sanctity and the quality of life as we know now, but we must fight, promote and strive to further enhance and enrich our living spaces for our benefit and for that of our future generations.

masyarakat 1 ttdi Currently, as most of us are aware, our biggest threat is the proposed mega development at Taman Rimba Kiara (TRK). As a member of the Save TRK Working Group, the TTDI RA has been taking several measures such as organising events at TRK, promoting our cause through the social and mass media, initiating legal action and engaging the authorities, politicians, long-house residents and other stakeholders. At the same time, the TTDI RA is also one of the founding members of “Save ”, a coalition of several RAs in Kuala Lumpur for the promotion of local government elections and the immediate gazettement of the “Kuala Lumpur Draft City Plan 2020”. The TTDI RA is also now working together with local NGOs on initiatives such as the “TTDI Community Edible Garden” to promote urban farming, “Transitions TTDI” to encour- age sustainable living and meaningful devel- opment and with the “Zero- Waste Group”. In our quest to further enhance harmonious living and interaction among residents, the TTDI RA will continue to organise public awareness campaigns such as health talks and exhibitions, sporting and social events. At the same time, lofty but practical and feasible projects such the “TTDI Town Square” and “TTDI Orchestra” are currently being considered. My fellow neighbours. We all have one common goal, that is, to further enhance and enrich the quality of lives in our “kampong” TTDI for us and for our future generations. I therefore urge each and every one of you to stand up and be counted and play your part as well as make a meaningful contribution to our community. For a start, do sign up and encourage your family members, neighbours and friends to sign up as members of the TTDI RA. In respect of activities organised by the RA, please try to participate in the events organised by the RA such as the “Healthy Living Day” on Saturday 27th October at PKK Tuanku Bainun – YB Hannah Yeoh will be in attendance. Only with such strong support, participation and commitment can our TTDI community move forward to greater heights

Thank you.

masyarakat 2 ttdi editorial Blessed to be a part of the TTDI Community

I have lived in Taman Tun since 1977, the year I got married to my then girlfriend who I met while studying at the University of Malaya. We needed a house of our own and since we were staying in Section 17, PJ, we looked for a house nearby. It was at this time that UDA Sea Park Sdn Bhd decided to turn a rubber estate into a housing estate. We bought the cheapest house available – a single-storey house in the Abang Hj Openg area for RM33,000. At that time, single-storey houses were going for about RM25,000 and RM33K therefore seemed pricey. We also saw the potential for a well-planned neighbourhood especially the immense green areas nearby. As we needed a house urgently, we decided to go for it (a decision which we cherish till today). I vividly remember the flyer saying something like ‘go back to nature – live next door to rubber trees’. While my hometown was and that of my wife, Rina, Segamat, , my daugh- ter, Cheryl and son Dillon only know TTDI as their one and only kampong. Now we have lived in Taman Tun for the past 41 years and I am indeed proud to boast that TTDI is a friendly and respected neighbourhood equipped with all the amenities, market, parks, library, fire and police station, community Hall, playgrounds, pasar malam, mosque, and even a MRT station. Yes we do have our share of problems such as noise, overdevelopment and not enough parking facilities but tell me which community does not have problems. In fact TTDI is exceptionally blessed in terms of green spaces; we have Taman Persekutan (opposite the primary school), the hills of Bukit Kiara with a 5.0 km challenging walking/jogging trail and Taman Rimba Kiara, right at our doorstep. What I appreciate most is the joy of hiking up Bukit Kiara while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna. It is one of the few remaining green lungs in the city. We should do whatever we can to protect and preserve this hill so that our children and their children will continue to enjoy this green oasis. And so too with our beloved neighbourhood. Let’s not take TTDI for granted. Let’s also do our part to protect and preserve what we have. And say ‘no’ to any new development. My wife and I feel blessed to have lived in TTDI for a significant part of our lives. We have made so many friends that we feel most welcome whenever we move around in this friendly neighbourhood. Indeed I’m proud to be a TTDIan. Dr Pola Singh

TTDI RA’s AGM – A Lively Family Affair in Spirit of Malaysia Baru Pankajkumar Even before 10.00 a.m. on the morning of 12 May 2018, scores of residents and members throng to Pusat Kreatif Kanak Kanak Tuanku Bainun, located at 48 Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad, to usher in not only the spirit of New Malaysia following the momentous victory of in the 14th General Election (GE), but also to attend the 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Resident’s Association.

Key highlights of the Honarary Secretary’s Report were in the Chairman’s opinion the lack of membership among residents as TTDI RA only has 1,495 registered members, with only 99 joining the Association in 2017 while some 40 signed up in the morning of the AGM. The irony of the membership figure is that in Taman Tun Dr Ismail itself, number of residents totaled some 40,000, but less than 5% are members of the Association.

TTDI faces a number of development issues. The Chairman commented on several projects which include the proposed development behind Sekolah Agama in Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi whereby it is now known from DBKL that are no plans for development.

YB Hannah Yeoh & Abdul En Hafiz Mr Leon Koay The other contentious issue is relation to the development bordering TTDI with TPC, owned by Sime Darby. Mr. Peter Leong gave members an overview of the development project where some work is being carried out closer to the guardhouse. Mr. Chairman commented that we should stop any traffic that encroaches into TTDI. In addition to this project, there are also efforts to re-build Tadika Diyana by the owner of the land into 2 blocks of office. Despite objections by both residents and the RA, DBKL is adamant that only affected parties within the 20 meters radius of the development have a right to be heard. Efforts are still ongoing to stop the development. (Update: DBKL has rejected this project).

The Chairman also highlighted the Bicara Rakyat Townhall Meeting between the residents and DBKL, where in attendance was not only the former Federal Territory Minister but other key personnel from DBKL. In following up with the Minister than, TTDI RA had written letters seeking a meeting with the Minister but we did not receive any replies from his office.

Members of the RA were also given an overview of our position with respect to Save KL (SKL), a loose coalition of several RAs in Kuala Lumpur with 4 key agendas as follows: i) To democratize the local council; ii) Effective communication in Town Planning; iii) Protection of green and public places ;iv) Gazettement of KL Draft 2020 Plan

masyarakat 7 ttdi Ms. Ambika highlighted to members the new MRT bus route effective on 12th May for bus T814 after the feedback received from residents via the RA.

Other matters were related to events conducted by the TTDIRA which among others include the TTDI Run 2017, where more than 800 runners took part, Transition TTDI, which is an effort to move away high fossil fuel dependence into a more sustainable way of living. Other events organized by the RA include the TTDI Zero Waste initiative and the TTDI Edible Garden.

Members of the TTDIRA who attended the AGM on that day had a pleasant surprise as midway through the AGM, our new Member of Parliament for Segambut, YB Hannah Yeoh, walked-in into the hall with thunderous applause and a standing ovation. YB Hannah in her address to the residents commented on issues plaguing the community which among others include the Taman

Dr Nirmal Singh Rimba Kiara issue as well as Bukit Kiara. YB Hannah thanked the residents for attending a mega ceramah prior to GE14 where contributions from the public amounted to RM150,000 – the highest collection received in a ceramah by Pakatan Harapan in a run-up to GE14. In show of support, YB Hannah agreed to donate RM10,000 from that collection to TTDIRA for the Save Taman Rimba Kiara fund. Mr. Leon Koay then presented to members the current status of ‘Save Taman Rimba Kiara’ where he also thanked members of the RA who assisted in time and effort to address issues related to our mutual cause. En. Ahmad Zaini Mohd brought up the issue related to parking at Ken Building and surrounding areas, mushrooming of restaurants and pubs as well as a house along JBH1 that has been turned into a homestay. Mr. Chairman in addressing the issues raised commented that these issues have been discussed with DBKL. As the matters arising was concluded, the outgoing EXCO thanked everyone for their support while elections were then carried out to appoint the new TTDIRA EXCO for 2018/2020 which was ably conducted by Dr Nirmal Singh. True to the spirit of New Malaysia, the EXCO comprises of new and old faces, multi-racial and a mixture of young and old as truly representative of Bangsa Malaysia and Malaysia Baru.

Today, isolated clumps of old rubber trees in Taman Rimba Kiara and its vicinities attest to its origins and the odd latex filled polystyrene bags tied to the trunks of the trees are evidence that rubber tappers still dwell in our midst. Amidst the affluent homes in the tree lined suburb of Taman Tun Dr. Ismail is a community that until lately, has been forgotten and left behind by the developments in its vicinities. Not many, including residents in TTDI are aware of its existence and how the community came into being. Hidden from view from the main road and sheltered under the shady canopy of trees in Taman Rimba Kiara, this community - the longhouse residents of TTDI, has a special place in the history of TTDI. Most of the residents are descendants of the rubber tappers of what was then Bukit Kiara Estate which was in existence more than 36 years ago before the estate was acquired for development. Dear residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail,

I would like to thank all of you for giving me the mandate to represent you in Segambut. Thank you for welcoming my team into your great community.

We have set up our new service centre right here in the heart of TTDI:

A-2-10, 2nd Floor, TTDI Plaza, Jalan Wan Kadir 3, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur.

Our service centre is open 5 days a week (Monday to Friday) from 10am to 6pm. This location is ideal, just a stone’s throw away from the TTDI MRT Station making it accessible for our voters. This office is also accessible for our friends with disabilities. Plaza TTDI fits the bill with elevators serving the offices here. The close proximity of Pejabat Cawangan Segambut DBKL is also an added advantage as we work very closely with DBKL in resolving matters affecting the constituency.

I look forward to meeting and working closely with all of you to bring this beautiful township of TTDI to greater heights.
