Taman Tun Dr Ismail and of the Editorial Committee message CHAIRMAN Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar Dear Fellow Members and Residents, Salam sejahtera. First and foremost, I wish to take this opportunity to convey my sincere apprecia- tion to those members who attended our 31st AGM held on Saturday, 12 May 2018 at PKK Tuanku Bainun and voted in the new Execu- tive Committee for the 2018-20 term. The year 2018 was indeed an exciting year thus far. Just three days prior to the AGM, Malaysia voted in a new Government and TTDI being in the Segambut parliamentary constituency, welcomed our new MP YB Puan Hannah Yeoh. In an atmosphere of euphoria in the spirit of “Malaysia Baru” and to our delight, YB Hannah dropped by the AGM where she delivered a inspiring speech and announced her full support to saving Taman Rimba Kiara with a personal donation oRM10,000.00 towards the “Save Taman Rimba Kiara” Fund. To many long-term residents, TTDI holds a very special place in our hearts. This is our “kampong”. Our children were born, bred and grew up here; they went to school and made friends here, and some of them met, fell in love and got married here. What we are seeing nowadays are more families celebrating and enjoying festivities more in TTDI rather than in kampongs which involves making the mad rush and exodus out of the city. Ladies and gentlemen, I must say this again. This is our “kampong” and we must claim and take ownership of it. We must not only protect and maintain the sanctity and the quality of life as we know now, but we must fight, promote and strive to further enhance and enrich our living spaces for our benefit and for that of our future generations. masyarakat 1 ttdi Currently, as most of us are aware, our biggest threat is the proposed mega development at Taman Rimba Kiara (TRK). As a member of the Save TRK Working Group, the TTDI RA has been taking several measures such as organising events at TRK, promoting our cause through the social and mass media, initiating legal action and engaging the authorities, politicians, long-house residents and other stakeholders. At the same time, the TTDI RA is also one of the founding members of “Save Kuala Lumpur”, a coalition of several RAs in Kuala Lumpur for the promotion of local government elections and the immediate gazettement of the “Kuala Lumpur Draft City Plan 2020”. The TTDI RA is also now working together with local NGOs on initiatives such as the “TTDI Community Edible Garden” to promote urban farming, “Transitions TTDI” to encour- age sustainable living and meaningful devel- opment and with the “Zero- Waste Group”. In our quest to further enhance harmonious living and interaction among residents, the TTDI RA will continue to organise public awareness campaigns such as health talks and exhibitions, sporting and social events. At the same time, lofty but practical and feasible projects such the “TTDI Town Square” and “TTDI Orchestra” are currently being considered. My fellow neighbours. We all have one common goal, that is, to further enhance and enrich the quality of lives in our “kampong” TTDI for us and for our future generations. I therefore urge each and every one of you to stand up and be counted and play your part as well as make a meaningful contribution to our community. For a start, do sign up and encourage your family members, neighbours and friends to sign up as members of the TTDI RA. In respect of activities organised by the RA, please try to participate in the events organised by the RA such as the “Healthy Living Day” on Saturday 27th October at PKK Tuanku Bainun – YB Hannah Yeoh will be in attendance. Only with such strong support, participation and commitment can our TTDI community move forward to greater heights Thank you. masyarakat 2 ttdi editorial Blessed to be a part of the TTDI Community I have lived in Taman Tun since 1977, the year I got married to my then girlfriend who I met while studying at the University of Malaya. We needed a house of our own and since we were staying in Section 17, PJ, we looked for a house nearby. It was at this time that UDA Sea Park Sdn Bhd decided to turn a rubber estate into a housing estate. We bought the cheapest house available – a single-storey house in the Abang Hj Openg area for RM33,000. At that time, single-storey houses were going for about RM25,000 and RM33K therefore seemed pricey. We also saw the potential for a well-planned neighbourhood especially the immense green areas nearby. As we needed a house urgently, we decided to go for it (a decision which we cherish till today). I vividly remember the flyer saying something like ‘go back to nature – live next door to rubber trees’. While my hometown was Malacca and that of my wife, Rina, Segamat, Johor, my daugh- ter, Cheryl and son Dillon only know TTDI as their one and only kampong. Now we have lived in Taman Tun for the past 41 years and I am indeed proud to boast that TTDI is a friendly and respected neighbourhood equipped with all the amenities, market, parks, library, fire and police station, community Hall, playgrounds, pasar malam, mosque, and even a MRT station. Yes we do have our share of problems such as noise, overdevelopment and not enough parking facilities but tell me which community does not have problems. In fact TTDI is exceptionally blessed in terms of green spaces; we have Taman Persekutan Bukit Kiara (opposite the primary school), the hills of Bukit Kiara with a 5.0 km challenging walking/jogging trail and Taman Rimba Kiara, right at our doorstep. What I appreciate most is the joy of hiking up Bukit Kiara while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna. It is one of the few remaining green lungs in the city. We should do whatever we can to protect and preserve this hill so that our children and their children will continue to enjoy this green oasis. And so too with our beloved neighbourhood. Let’s not take TTDI for granted. Let’s also do our part to protect and preserve what we have. And say ‘no’ to any new development. My wife and I feel blessed to have lived in TTDI for a significant part of our lives. We have made so many friends that we feel most welcome whenever we move around in this friendly neighbourhood. Indeed I’m proud to be a TTDIan. SPORTS FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY: A CASE STUDY OF KUALA LUMPUR 1Maassoumeh Barghchi, 1Dasimah bt Omar, and 2Mohd Salleh Aman 1Department of Town and Regional Planning, Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam, 40450 Selangor, Malaysia 2Sports Centre, University of Malaya (UM), 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Abstract Sports and sports facilities development have improved rapidly over the past years in Malaysia. However, such improvements are inadequate compared to the overall development of sports at international level. In recent years sport is getting more and more influential and it will continue to grow in importance, even for developing countries. Increase in the amount of public money being spent on sports facilities, at the same time, increase in the number of sports facilities as well as increasingly importance of sustainability necessitate demand to investigate issues surrounding sports facilities development especially in Kuala Lumpur as the regional and national centre for sporting activities. The long-term benefits to cities and local communities need to achieve more initiative by decision-makers. However, sustainability is more important for sports facilities due to requirement of huge money for construction, ancillary needs and constant maintenance costs. This research aims to examine the effectiveness and intangible benefits of sports facilities in Kuala Lumpur through residents' perceptions. Four case studies each selected from one of the four managing zones of sports facilities developed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall provide information for this research. The research able to rank the case studies based on residents' perception towards their attitude about facilities and programmes, using of the facilities, and respondents’ willingness to pay.

  • Towards a Sustainable Landscape of Urban Parks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: a Study from a Management Perspective
Towards a sustainable landscape of urban parks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: A study from a management perspective By: Roziya Ibrahim A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Social Science in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Landscape University of Sheffield United Kingdom May 2016 ABSTRACT Kuala Lumpur’s urban parks have evolved to fulfil the needs of its multi-cultural urban communities since the conception of its first public park in the late 19th century. Nevertheless, the management and maintenance of these tropical urban parks are currently under pressure as local authorities have no longer adequate funding to maintain the existing landscape as they have to focus on addressing the impact of environmental problems; particularly frequent flooding that has been a never-ending issue facing the city. There are growing pressures on resources, especially on water supply, in response to urbanization and population growth. Nevertheless, Kuala Lumpur’s urban parks were highly dependent on potable water for landscape maintenance at a time of growing demand for this limited resource. There is a possibility that these urban parks can be managed in a more sustainable manner, which may consequently reduce their dependency on potable water resource for irrigation. They might also make a more positive contribution to managing stormwater control and increasing habitat diversity. The challenge, therefore, is to try and achieve a more sustainable, ecologically informed design and management practice without alienating park users, management, and maintenance staff. This research aims to investigate the potential of changing the design and management of Kuala Lumpur’s urban parks towards a more ecologically sustainable landscape practice.

Anti guan eng - ambiga posters in Taman Tun Dr Ismail“We forgive them whoever are responsible. The more they do it, the more people will despise them,” said DAP MP for Segambut Lim Lip Eng. Lim through his Twitter reported that the offensive posters were "posted all over TTDI this morning". Anti guan eng - ambiga posters in Taman Tun Dr Ismail“We urge TTDI police to announce openly who the culprits are, because the police should be able to easily identify them through the many CCTV recently installed in TTDI under Najib's transformation programme,” tweeted Lim. The MP said in a statement later today that the posters were found at bus stops, public telephone booths and plastered over old posters along Jalan Datuk Sulaiman and Jalan Burhanoddin Helmi in the Kuala Lumpur suburb under his constituency. He expressed “disgust” at the intolerant, racist and politically-motivated posters. “Some cowards had put these posters overnight with an intolerable message (on it) as told to me by my TTDI supporters. “Upon checking in the later part of the morning this message has been torn off,” said Lim.

A global model and a local model are formulated based on hedonic price method. The global and local models were analysed with an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) respectively. Both the models were compares to see which model offered a better result. The results of OLS regression illustrated that Titiwangsa and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) offer the highest economic value for model 2 and 3 respectively. The results of GWR determined that the economic value of an UGS can be analysed by the region. The GWR result revealed that FRIM provides high economic value to all the residential areas in KL city. However, the economic value of Titiwangsa is not valuable for the residential areas in KL city including Mont Kiara Pines, Jinjang Selatan, Segambut Garden, Bandar Menjalara and Taman Bukit Maluri. As a conclusion, even though Titiwangsa generates the highest economic value, it is only significant at certain residential areas as proved by the local model.

February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them.
