Promises made, promises kept

Dear friends of Franklin Square,

Someday, 2010 may be thought of as the year Franklin Square came of age. Completion and opening of the stunning $175 million, seven-story Patient Care Tower at Franklin Square keeps a very solemn promise to the community. With the help of visionary support, we have successfully envisioned, supported and delivered this magnificent new Welcome to medical facility. From the ground up, the health needs of a growing 21 st century Franklin Square’s new community have been built in. As the profiles in this special edition of as promised reveal, the Franklin Square Patient Care” Tower ” community is notable for intense devotion and great generosity. From the longstanding volunteerism and leadership of Bob Romadka and his family to the perceptiveness of donors Scott and Yvonne Barhight, the greatest gifts these modern philanthropists bring us is their engagement and dedication.

Their appreciation is well earned. In this issue, read about five key Franklin Square associates who, in various ways, led the way to completion of the Patient Care Tower. Our mission of delivering excellent community-based healthcare today stands on a firmer foundation because of their contributions to this crucial project.

To all of you who have supported us in this dynamic campaign to “Keep the Promise,” to bring healthcare facilities and services in Eastern Baltimore County fully into the 21 st century, our deepest thanks.

For those who will benefit from these enhancements, welcome to Franklin Square’s new Patient Care Tower!

Sincerely,

The Facilities Director: It’s been a great adventure.”

It’s his job. Over the past five years since the Patient Care Tower first broke ground, Dennis Kephart has been the point person at Franklin Square in overseeing that project’s development. As Director of Facilities and the Tower Project, Kephart has managed a broad array of responsibilities, from the initial Request for Information and Request for Proposal selection and the coordination of vendors to providing owner representation throughout the design and construction processes.

Kephart admits that the most difficult phase of the project was designing to budget, given some of the challenges presented by the site. The Patient Care Tower was given a relatively small footprint, and so required additional height to the design. Fortunately the Hospital was given an easement on their height restriction covenant, which allowed the extra levels to be added. As representative for the owner, Kephart also was responsible for coordinating review and feedback on the building’s design and infrastructure between the Hospital’s Associate user groups and the building’s architect and designer. “That responsibility included bringing together the Hospital’s user groups with the design team to ensure that what was being designed worked for these groups and also remained within budget. That was not a small task,” he smiles .

However, Kephart has nothing but praise for the overall process. “The Patient Care Tower you see today is the work of so many—senior management and Board members, MedStar, department leadership, and user groups that included line staff,” he notes. “This is not the work of a few, but of many people engaged in creating the best possible patient and family experience.”

Shared history. Shared commitment.

At first glance, a bank and a hospital may not seem to have much in common. It’s when you look past the business these institutions are in to the people they serve that you’ll find the connection.

Rosedale Federal Savings & Loan has been based in the community that surrounds Franklin Square since 1908. Not only has Rosedale Federal been an important part of the community for more than 100 years because it meets its neighbors’ banking needs, Rosedale is also very active in supporting a range of community organizations.

That support includes a recent $100,000 pledge to Franklin Square’s Patient Care Tower campaign. Rosedale Federal President and CEO Thomas Wintz, a member of the Hospital’s Board of Directors, recognized the commitment that Franklin Square was making with the addition of the Patient Care Tower and felt that it was important that his institution support that commitment.

“Franklin Square and Rosedale Federal have a shared history of service to this community,” says Tom. “We have a longstanding shared mission of providing safe, high quality, excellent service and education to improve the overall health of the people we serve.”

He feels that the tower will be a physical symbol of Franklin Square’s commitment to the people of this community and it’s important that the leaders in the community support it.

“The majority of our branches surround the Franklin Square campus. Many Rosedale Federal customers and employees are served by the hospital,” he adds. “Sustaining and enhancing this kind of state-of-the-art medical facility is important to the entire community. For all of us at Rosedale Federal, it is crucial that we ensure the overall well-being of our community—both financial health and medical health are fundamental for a community to thrive and grow.”

Carroll W. Reid, Jr., Franklin Square night stationary engineer

“Everyone should give back to the place where they work.” That’s the firm belief of Carroll W. Reid, Jr., Night Stationary Engineer at Franklin Square Hospital Center. Carroll has worked at Franklin Square for 23 years and has always been an active supporter of the Hospital, raising money for the NICU in the early ’90s, making a large donation with his wife to help build the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute, and serving as a member of the capital campaign committee to help raise the funds needed for several new facilities.

Most recently he and his wife made a very generous $5,000 donation to the Patient Care Tower campaign, a project he believes will have a tremendous positive impact on the entire Franklin Square community. “The new Tower will be state of the art,” he explains. “It will help physicians provide the best care possible and speed up wait times in our very busy Emergency Department. The new facilities will also make the experience of receiving care more comfortable for patients because everyone will have a private room.”

For Carroll, Franklin Square is more than the place where he works. He, his wife and two children live in the community just three miles away from the Hospital and receive their medical care from Franklin Square physicians. His oldest son, Carroll Reid III, also works at Franklin Square.

Carroll has noticed that more Associates contribute to the fundraising campaigns at Franklin Square than at other workplaces. “I believe that everyone who works at Franklin Square should give back,” he notes. “Not only is this your employer, many of us also use the services that the Hospital provides.”

He adds, “When you give to Franklin Square, you know exactly where the money is going and how it will be used. A promise worth celebrating

It’s not often you find a hospital lobby filled with guests dancing the night away, but the Celebrate the Promise Donor Event was no ordinary celebration. Hosted by the

Franklin Square Hospital Center Foundation, the event brought together over 200 guests for an evening of music, gourmet cuisine, dancing and guided tours of key areas in the new Patient Care Tower.

Arriving guests were greeted by the sounds of a brass quintet at the building’s entrance.

Once inside, donors, members of the Hospital’s Operating and Foundation Boards, legislators and members of the tower contracting team enjoyed a raw bar, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as well as dancing to live music. Franklin Square Hospital Center President Dr. Adrienne Kirby, MedStar Health Executive Vice President of Operations for the Baltimore Region Carl Schindelar and Hospital and Foundation Board Member Scott Barhight shared her excitement about the opening of the Patient Care Tower and expressed their gratitude for the hard work and support of everyone who helped make the tower a reality. The Foundation is very thankful to event underwriters COMCAST and The Classic Catering People for underwriting the costs for this fantastic celebration.

“This event was one small way we can say thank you to our supporters,” says Janet Rafky, Vice President of Development and Community Relations. “The generosity of everyone who made a donation to the Patient Care Tower campaign made it possible for Franklin Square to keep our promise of caring for the community alive and well.” 16 as
