Study 4978 Cornwall OnLine Census Project, 1891 This document was supplied by the depositor and has been modified by AHDS History Introduction THIS STUDY contains our [Cornwall Online Census Project] transcript of the 1891 census returns for Cornwall. It has been transcribed, checked and validated by the volunteers of the Cornwall Online Census Project, the Cornish arm of the Free Census project. The original records are held by The National Archives and this transcription is done with their permission. Image copies of the original returns can be viewed on film, fiche or CDROM from commercial suppliers and at many research facilities around the world. This study contains a full transcription of the 1891 census returns for Cornwall—a snapshot of the people and places of Cornwall on the night of April 5th, 1891. The file names are the PRO piece number code (without punctuation). About UK Census Returns About Free Census (FreeCEN) was started early in 2000 with a pilot project for the 1891 census returns for Devon. The aim of Free Census is to transcribe all the UK 19th century census returns. It is part of FreeUKGEN and is a sister project to FreeBMD and FreeREG. The intention is that all three of the UK primary sources for the family historian will be online and “free to view.” Six months after the Devon project started, the Cornwall 1891 commenced. Most English and Welsh counties are now covered for the 1891, with the Scottish projects concentrating on the 1841. There are several English 1861 projects, using commercially produced discs and two English 1841 projects, including Cornwall.

  • Population Change in Cornwall 1951-2001
Population change in Cornwall 1951-2001 1951-61 At mid-century Cornwall seemed to have resumed the pattern familiar from the 1860s. Overall, there was another slight absolute drop in population in the 1950s. Several parishes in rural east Cornwall lost more than 10% of their population. Things were different in mid-Cornwall where the growth of Newquay was maintained and here more parishes gained than lost people. Population growth was particularly striking in some rural parishes near Truro – in Probus, Ruanlanihorne, Kea and St Just in Roseland. Meanwhile, boosted by cold war military spending, Helston grew quickly. But in west Penwith, like east Cornwall, the picture was reminiscent of the second half of the nineteenth century, with widespread population falls. Cornwall seemed irrevocably locked into population decline, so much so that the County Council planners in 1952 forecast that population would only grow slowly, if at all, to 1971, as net out-migration and an ageing population structure combined to produce a sustainable steady-state population regime. But events were soon to prove them hopelessly wrong. 1961-71 During the 1960s a fundamental shift occurred in the demographic regime, the first major turning point since the 1860s. From a state of population stability Cornwall was now set to experience a state of population growth. And not just growth, but major growth. Population rose in the 1960s at a rate of 11.5%, something not seen since the 1830s. And this was to prove to be no temporary phenomenon. It was followed by further growth of 9.2% in the 1970s, 12.3% in the 1980s and 7.0% in the 1990s.

St Erme Neighbourhood Plan Newsletter No 7 A p r i l 2 0 1 9 ‘Are we nearly there yet’ We certainly are! The draft Neighbourhood Plan proposal was approved by the Steering Group and the Parish Council on the 26th February and submitted to Cornwall Council. It has been checked to ensure that it is legally compliant under the Neighbourhood Planning Regulations and signed off by the Portfolio Holder for Planning . Cornwall Council commenced their six week statutory consultation period on 4th April 2019 to 16th May 2019. The Plan is available for inspection on the Cornwall Council website, at Trispen Post Office and Stores, the St Erme Community Centre and on the parish council’s website at www.stermeparishcouncil.org.uk . Cornwall Council will then look to appoint an Independent Examiner who will examine the Plan in detail and come back to Cornwall Council and the Parish Council with a draft report. Cornwall Council and the Parish Council will discuss the report and any necessary changes can be made before the Portfolio Holder at the Council signs it off, allowing us to proceed to a Referendum. This is arranged in the same way as any election by Cornwall Council and a simple majority will allow it to be accepted.
