Adrian Monk: WXFL/Florence-Muscle Shoals, AL GSM Donald “Rocky” Reich (l) retired last week after more than 50 years in radio. During the festivities, company owner Jerry Phillips (r) and longtime friend Charlie Monk paid their respects.

Charts (continued from page 1) collected an aggregate 348 adds this week from our 123 reporters. The aforementioned five superstars garnered 205 of those adds, leaving just 143 slots for 50 other artists who got at least one add this week. The chart jolt can even be felt by big country acts with recently-released singles. Fact is, when five superstars release new singles, there’s just not much left to go around. Further muddying this week’s chart waters is Fourth of July weekend airplay. Lengthy countdowns of the top few hundred songs impact current airplay, as does a healthy dose of spins from patriotic Gold. In fact, five songs – Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” (605 plays), Aaron Tippin’s “Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagles Fly” (428), Toby Keith’s “American Solider” (390), Brooks & Dunn’s “Only In America” (369) and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA” (352) – got enough play to chart in the Top 50. As the saying goes, there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Those are just a few things you might want to keep in mind as you analyze the Mediabase airplay information in both the main chart and the Activator chart in this week’s Country Aircheck on your way to making music decisions.
