CONVINCED that it is imperative for the peoples of ASEAN to continue and accelerate their development processes in order to meet their growin gprovido t need d an se them wit qualitha f lif o yaccorn i e d with their dignit well-beingd yan ,

RECOGNIZING that these development processes can only be sustained if the availability of natural resources is similarly sustained,

MINDFUL tha utilizinn i t naturar gou l resource mee o neede t s tth f so the present generation, the ability of future generations to meet their needs imperiledshoule b t dno ,

CONSCIOUS that the sustainability of development requires that development processes and environmental management be conducted in an integrated manner,

AWARE thae integratioth t f environmentano l considerations inte oth development process requires that international and regional cooperation be further heightened and intensified, HEREBY RESOLVE

I. That ASEAN member countries adopt the principle of sustainable development to guide and to serve as an integrating facto thein ri r common efforts.

. II That ASEAN cooperative effort focussee sb d upon those common resources and issues that affect the common well-being of the people ASEANf so , limiteincludinge b : t o no t d t ,bu

the common seas; land-resource land-based san d pollution; tropical rain-forests; air qualityd ;an urba rurad nan l pollution.

III. That ASEAN cooperation should encompass governments and government agencies as well as the private business sector/ professional associations, educational and academic institution non-governmentad san l organizations.

. IV Tha n affirmini t g this Resolution e ASEAth , N Environment Ministers are aware that the pursuit of sustainable development woul e besb d t e establishmenserveth y b d a f o t regional body on the environment of sufficient stature whose task should include, but not be limited to :

(a) recommending policy guidelines on the implementation principle ofth sustainablf eo e development;

(b) facilitatin e incorporatioth g f o environmentan l considerations inte programmeth o d activitiean s f o s ASEAN committees;

- 2 - (c) monitoring the quality of the environment and natural resource enablo st periodie th e c compilatio f ASEAno N state of the environment reports; and

(d) enhancing the cooperation on environmental matters.
