NSWISA President’s Report

2020 was a year that none of us could have imagined. What started as an exciting year of change for NSWISA quickly developed to be the most challenging year the world has encountered in many decades. It did however showcase the commitment and resilience of the NSWISA family as NSW skating came through the challenges in the most positive position of all domestic skating and we are proud to have been able to facilitate so many events in such a challenging year.

January 2020 saw the successful adoption of the new NSWISA Constitution, which brought our Association into the modern era from both compliance and operational perspectives. The newly drafted constitution replaced our previous constitution, which was last updated in 2009. I would like to thank all Members who took the time to review this document and lodge their vote. Organisations like NSWISA don’t run themselves so we are grateful for the participation of our Members in all aspects of our operations, including administrative matters such as this.

The adoption of the new Constitution saw NSWISA move from a Council with Club Representatives to a Board structure. I would like to thank all of the Club Representatives who attended NSWISA Council Meetings and who supported the change to the new structure. We are pleased to have continued strong relationships with our Affiliated Clubs throughout 2020 and look forward to continuing this in 2021, where the focus will hopefully be more on the skating and the development of our sport, as opposed to meeting Covid-safe requirements.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the NSWISA Executive, Council, Board and Staff, who assisted NSWISA to navigate through 2020. The postponement of the AGM from 24th March to 2nd June saw a number of people who had planned to change their responsibilities in our sport remain in positions for longer than they had intended as we waited for the rescheduled AGM to be held. I sincerely thank those who continued to assist during this difficult and unexpected time. As the year progressed, Covid did change the ability of some of our volunteers to continue to serve NSWISA. We recognise the many personal impacts and challenges that were encountered during this year and respect the tough decisions individuals needed to make. Thank you to both those who held positions with NSWISA and also those who stepped into the vacancies throughout the year, particularly Alastair Furnival who has stepped into the big role of Treasurer and provides great assistance to NSWISA. Thank you also to Lynne Kentish who has continued to manage the financial bookwork for the Association.

In ISU events, William Badaoui, Kailani Craine, Matilda Friend & Brendan Kerry all represented Australia at the ISU Four Continents Championships in February. NSWISA Members were also present as Officials at this Championship. March saw the unfortunate cancellation of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships which were scheduled to be held in from 16th to 22nd March and the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships which were scheduled to be held in Lake Placid from the 3rd to 5th of April 2020. NSWISA skaters worked hard to qualify for these events and we would like to acknowledge the

achievements of and share the disappointment with Kailani Crane, Brendan Kerry and Team Unity who were consequently not able to compete in these Championships. As the judge for one of these Championships, I too felt the disappointment of the postponement and ultimate cancellation, and hope that international events are able to return with some certainty in the near future.

Locally, Government restrictions and Public Health Orders caused the cancellation of events and the shutting down of facilities. NSWISA worked extremely hard during this time to position ourselves with the Government to achieve a speedy and practical return to the ice as soon as it was safe to do so. We were very conscious of the economic viability of NSW rinks and lobbied strongly for rinks to be considered and classified appropriately in the updating of Public Health Orders and lifting of restrictions. Given the size of the rinks and the fact that much of figure skating safety is based on social distancing, we were able to achieve positive results in allowing rinks to open much earlier in the process and at a greater capacity than had been proposed. Plans such as re-opening with a maximum of 10 people at a time including staff, coaches and skaters were not feasible and our many meetings with Government representatives and advocates for our cause resulted in positive outcomes. The opening of facilities from 13th June, in a manner that was both economically and practically feasible, and allowing equal access to ice for our Members, made the many frustrations experienced throughout this process worthwhile.

While the return to skating was successful, there were some challenges with the restriction of movements between Greater Sydney and Regional areas. Erina Ice Arena remained closed throughout 2020 however skaters from the Central Coast and Hunter in particular were impacted by these geographic restrictions. We were also pleased that lobbying for all Members to be able to compete, given they could all train, resulted in the removal of the restrictions originally implemented on adults competing. While NSWISA facilitated 33 events in 2020, there were also some casualties with the cancellation of events. Thank you to all of the Clubs, skaters and families who worked with the organisers and volunteers of the events that were held and who have been understanding of the many new practices and requirements we need to adhere to as a result of the many Public Health Order & Covid-safe constraints.

I am extremely pleased that the NSW Championships and all of the scheduled Club Championships were able to be held. Of the IJS competitions scheduled for 2020, only Hollins Trophy was not able to take place due to the shut down. NSWISA also made the decision to cancel the 2020 Sydney Synchronised Festival due to the lack of time teams had to prepare for this event. While it was disappointing to cancel the largest SYS competition in the country, the safety of our skaters is our priority. The lack of training time, combined with the complexities of the dynamics in SYS, meant that holding this event was not in the interest of competitors so the decision was made to cancel.

On a positive note, the great event that was the NSW Championships, saw many fantastic performances and the quality of skaters selected in Team NSW 2020 was outstanding. Thank you to the HISC volunteers for their tireless work at this event. Based on the results of the NSW Championships, we were pleased to select Team NSW 2020 and run an event at Macquarie Ice Rink in December to showcase the performances

of our competitors in the ISA Online National Competition. It was wonderful to celebrate the success of our athletes in such a challenging year. Congratulations to the Team NSW skaters and also to those skaters who participated in the ISA Online Trial Event in September. You all made NSW proud. Congratulations also to this year’s deserving Alan Blinn & Simone Moore Memorial Fund scholarship recipients (Tier One - Vlada Vasiliev; Tier Two - Sophie Moodie & Pauline Gorelik; Tier Three - Ainsley Dimitrov & Kryshtof Pradeaux). We look forward to watching your progress.

In other categories, it was unfortunate that the Ice Zoo Artistic and the inaugural NSW Artistic Championships both had to be cancelled. In Aussie Skate, the competitive season was halved with the first three scheduled competitions cancelled. NSWISA had also planned to implement Inclusive Skating competitions as part of our offer for 2020 however the pandemic resulted in this not being possible. Developing an offer in this area is something we are still working on however the situation overseas is still causing delays in this. Successful T&D Days were held in March and July for both skaters and officials and we thank everyone who volunteered at, participated in and provided feedback from these events.

While some test sessions in the first half of the season were cancelled due to Covid, this was more than made up for in the second half of the year with twelve test sessions of various sizes being held in three clusters in July, August and December. NSWISA & ISA both relaxed various requirements to assist skaters to achieve their test goals for the year and minimise disruption to intended participation in new competition levels. We continue to support skaters who don’t yet feel ready to take tests they had applied for prior to Covid and are holding these tests on an “unallocated” list until they are ready to test. Thank you to Chris Aroney for her help in managing our test sessions.

NSWISA are grateful to the NSW Government, the NSW Office of Sport and Sport NSW for their work and support throughout the pandemic. From financial grants for both Clubs and NSWISA, to the provision of sanitizer, assistance with regulations and lobbying, we appreciate the support of these organisations and their key staff throughout 2020.

2020 provided opportunities for NSWISA to continue to develop or work in three key areas. These were NSWISA family development, governance and administration. The development of the NSWISA family is of great importance to the Board and the increased engagement with our family through our social media and newsletters is very pleasing. Thank you to Sakina Atkins for her great work on our social media content, both engaging with skaters during the lock down and sharing great content for the remainder of the year. I encourage all Members to read NSWISA’s newsletters and engage with NSWISA on social media. These are great ways to stay up to date with news and events, and to also take advantage of helpful information for your participation in skating.

Work also continued on NSWISA’s governance with the development and refinement of policies and procedures to ensure compliant, efficient and transparent practices in our Association. We have commenced work on a project to support Members’ mental health and look forward to working with our

New South Wales Ice Skating Assoc Inc

Clubs to bring this project to life. As another benefit for our Members, NSWISA is an Active Kids Provider so these vouchers can be applied to Membership Fees. A new CRM system was selected and development has commenced on a platform which we hope will bring a greatly improved user experience for our Members, as well as considerably increased administrative benefits for the Association. The complexities of managing the intricacies of our sport as well as the many compliance requirements are fundamental to the decisions that are made by the Board. The more streamlined and transparent we can make NSWISA’s activities, combined with a reliable CRM, the easier it will be to ensure the success of our volunteer based organisation for generations to come.

In what was already such a challenging and heartbreaking year for many of our Members, NSWISA lost two of our most accomplished pair skaters. In April, Olympic & ISU Judge and dual pairs Olympian Jacqueline Kendall-Baker (nee Mason) passed away aged eighty-four years. A Life Member of NSWISA, Jackie and her partner Mervyn Bower became the first Australian pairs team to compete at an Olympic Games and a World Championships. They also won an incredible twelve Australian National titles during their partnership. Jackie held numerous official roles within our sport and we thank her for all she contributed to both our Association and the greater sport.

In July, we were shocked by the loss of Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya in at just twenty years of age. The extraordinary achievements of Katia & her partner Harley Windsor will forever be remembered in Australian skating history. They were World Junior Champions, World Junior Grand Prix Champions and two time Australian Champions who represented Australia at the Olympics, World Championships, Four Continents Championships, ISU Grand Prix and other international competitions. Katia was fearless in the pursuit of her skating dreams and we can all be inspired by her. Both of these ladies showed us what’s possible when you commit to your dreams and we should use this as inspiration to be stronger ourselves and commit to achieving our own goals, just as they did. Let’s make both Jackie & Katia proud of the impact they had on our community and strive to achieve in their memory. I again extend our deepest condolences to Jackie & Katia’s families and friends.

Under our new structure, the NSWISA Delegates to ISA are decided by the Board so this falls under standard Board operations rather than separate positions elected at the AGM. The NSW Delegates were agreed to be Rebecca Andrew, Joanna Miller & Terri Probert. As so many meetings were, the ISA AGM was held virtually in 2020. One 28th June, Delegates from around the country joined the ISA Board & Operational Directors on Zoom to receive Reports and vote in the elections for the Secretary and two Board positions. Sadly, the Oceania International Novice Figure Skating Competition scheduled to be held in New Zealand in 2020 was cancelled. The ISU Four Continents Championships that was to be held in Sydney in February 2021 was also cancelled but has been provisionally allotted to be held in Sydney 2023. The ISA Bonus System was used at all NSW IJS competitions throughout 2020 and the NSW Championships was successfully run as a Benchmark Event. NSWISA again provided feedback to ISA on a number of rule updates and policies throughout the year to assist in developing the sport.

NSWISA worked very hard to support ISA in the development of online competitions, providing admin and IT support for both the test event and the National Competition. Many hours of administration and technical support were provided, as was operational advice and the platform for the videos. Our Officials were also very supportive of these events, putting in many hours, especially over Christmas, to support these events for our skaters. NSWISA are hopeful that the efforts of our team and the feedback provided about these events are taken on board by ISA for future competitions.

I would like to thank all of the NSWISA Volunteers, Board, Clubs, Officials and Staff who generously gave their time to benefit our skaters, both at events and behind the scenes. Thank you also to all of the parents, partners, family members and friends who have supported our skaters, officials and volunteers in their endeavours throughout 2020. We appreciate all of the officials who generously gave their time throughout the year to enable skaters to test and compete. Thank you especially to Cam Ly & Gail Montgomery for their expertise and hard work in setting up and managing our IJS and other equipment. We were pleased to award the 2020 Wendy Langton Distinguished Service Award to Gail Montgomery. NSWISA are truly thankful to Gail for the time, effort, expertise and commitment she gives to our sport and for enabling competitions to happen. Thank you also to Alison Herring and Gloria Williams for their work throughout such a difficult year. The contributions of all of these people are greatly appreciated.

Even with the additional challenges that 2020 presented, it is pleasing to have shared in this Report that NSWISA achieved significant progress across a number of areas of our Strategic Plan. Let’s hope 2021 is a much smoother year for everyone and another positive year for skating in NSW.

Secretary’s report for the Year 2020

The 2020 Board for the Association was elected at the AGM held via Zoom on 2nd June 2020. Twelve meetings were held between the AGMs in 2020 and 2021 and attendance by elected Board Members was as follows:

Meetings President Rebecca Andrew 12/12 Secretary Peter Jones 12/12 Treasurer Michael Santer* 3/3 Alastair Furnival* 8/9

Board Members Susanne Bragge* 1/1 Alastair Furnival* 3/3 Joanna Miller 10/12 Jennifer Peak 12/12 Terri Probert 11/11

Through 2020 there were changes to the Board, with Michael Santer stepping down as Treasurer in July and Terri Probert stepping down as a Board Member in February. These positions were filled by Alastair Furnival and Susanne Bragge respectively. Alastair moved into the position of Treasurer and his Board position was not filled.

NSWISA Membership: 2020 saw a decrease in overall membership numbers from 802 in 2019 to 671 in 2020. This can be attributed primarily to the Covid-19 pandemic and the cancellation of a number of events on the NSWISA calendar. A pleasing result was that the Junior and Senior membership categories showed a slight increase. Membership Breakdown 2020: Basic 78 Basic Introductory 47 Clubs 9 Life Members 13 Judges & Officials 45 Junior 156 Professional 11 Recreational 6 Senior 122 Synchronized Skating Members 166 Theatre on Ice 40

What a year we had in skating in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of a significant number of events, both at the Aussie Skate and Club levels, the NSW Association level and even at the ISA level. Significant events were not able to be held, including Hollins Trophy, NSW Artistic Championships, Sydney Synchronised Skating Festival and even the Australian Figure Skating Championships. In 2020 the NSW Figure Skating Championships were held at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium from 3rd October to 5th October 2020. The Championships ran smoothly, thanks primarily to the Volunteers and Officials who worked long and hard to ensure the individual events ran close to schedule. To the volunteers from HISC, a big thank you for all your efforts. To all others who made a contribution, please accept the thanks of the Association for all that you do for our sport.

NSWISA members (Judging & Officials) Our judges and officials continue to upskill and pass on their knowledge – without your time and expertise this sport could not continue.

Simone Moore & Alan Blinn Memorial Scholarship: The Simone Moore and Alan Blinn Memorial Scholarships were awarded at the 2020 New South Wales Championships.

● The major scholarship of $3000 was awarded to Vlada Vasiliev. ● Two scholarships of $1000 each were awarded to Pauline Gorelik & Sophie Moodie ● Two scholarships of $500 were awarded to Ainsley Dimitrov & Kryshtof Pradeaux

ISA testing was held at 14 test sessions at various rinks during the year. NSWISA provided test sessions as where possible due to the cancellation of earlier test sessions in the year. Judging officials in conjunction with Club Test Officers and NSWISA Administration Officer Gloria Williams and volunteer Chris Aroney were responsible for organising the test sessions. The running of tests involves a considerable effort by everyone concerned and we thank them for their efforts.

Aussie Skate: In 2020, three Aussie Skate competitions were run by affiliated clubs, on behalf of NSWISA. The Club Point Score Trophy 2020 was won by skaters from Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Skating Club.

Volunteers: To all of those who give their time and make a contribution to our sport, whether it be at Club level or higher, the Association owes you a debt of gratitude.

Wendy Langton Distinguished Service Award: This Award was first introduced in 2019 and recognises Wendy’s huge contribution to our sport in general and the Association in particular. In 2019, the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award was Cam Ly, and in 2020 Gail Montgomery was recognised for her continued contribution to our sport and to its participants.

Gail volunteers tirelessly, setting up every competition and then acting as the Accountant, running the IJS at these competitions. NSWISA are truly thankful to Gail for the time, effort, expertise and commitment she provides to our sport.

A special thank you must go to the NSWISA Administration Officers. Alison Herring and Gloria Williams do much of the work behind the scenes and are very often the initial point of contact for skaters and parents. The Association offers you both our sincere thanks and appreciation for your contribution and support of skating in general, plus its officials and members.

TRESURER’S REPORT First, I’d like to echo the President’s comments about the profound challenges which were presented not only to NSWISA but to the whole of sport in Australia – and of course to the country in general – last year, and particularly during the first unpredictable months of the COVID pandemic. The measure of NSWISA’s success in responding to this rapidly changing environment is not found primarily in the accounts, but in the early re-entry to training and competitive skating: the work of the President, Board members, the Executive Team, our Club leadership and many volunteers should not be underestimated: ice skating was one of the few sports which was able to meet the majority of our State competition schedule last year.

Second, particular thanks go to: Michael Santer, who retired from the Treasurer’s role during the year, and left such big shoes to fill; Lynne Kentish, who does a fantastic job of managing our accounts; and the NSWISA staff team of Alison Herring and Gloria Williams, who look after our membership, competition and administrative expenditures.

Looking to the income and expenditure statement in our annual accounts, it is obvious that there is a significant improvement (of some 583%) in our surplus between the 2020 and 2019 calendar years. Reflecting the COVID environment, there are a few extraordinary items driving this, viz.:

1. On the income side, a very substantial increase in Grants Received, which more than offset the marginal reduction in membership income, and to date has exceeded the extra operating costs of events due to social distancing and limited spectator access. The principal State Government grant of $96,000 is made over a two year period, so some of this income will be acquitted against expenditure in 2021;

2. On the expenditure side, overall costs of competitions were significantly reduced. This was due to both: the unfortunate and unavoidable cancellation of some earlier season competitions; and the comparatively cheaper costs of holding NSW State Championships at Newcastle; and,

3. Other expenditure items such as travel and allocation for rep clothing were also reduced due to the lack of opportunity.

All of this has contributed to a significant increase in net assets of the Association, particularly in our cash position. Members will note that the Memorial Fund monies have now been clearly distinguished, and are held in a new separate account. The Board is giving consideration to forward strategy in the application of these funds.

Further, $250,000 of the Association’s cash has been placed in a two-year, interest-bearing term deposit. During 2020, and particularly given the unpredictability of markets, the Board took the view that Members would prefer a low-risk investment strategy focused on capital preservation.

New South Wales Ice Skating Assoc Inc

Looking forward, the Board held a strategy session in January, which focused in part on what might be done with the assets of NSWISA, and particularly how these might be leveraged for the growth of the sport. Various avenues regarding increased participation – and in the long run increased infrastructure – are being explored.

Attention is also being paid to value for money and productivity, as well as the Association’s technology. Accordingly, members will be aware that in December, the decision was taken to invest in a new database system, which is being rolled out in incremental modules, and which will also provide the platform for online marketing and communications in the future.

Thank you for the support and guidance of the President, Secretary and my other fellow Board Members, and hopefully 2021 will be a much less challenging and eventful year than the one past.

Yours sincerely,

Alastair Furnival Treasurer, NSWISA

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020

1 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (NSW). The Directors have determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historical costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

a. Income Tax The Association is a self asssessing exempt organisation for income tax purposes, being a non-profit organisation formed for the administration and encouragement of a sport.

b. Property,Plant & Equipment (PPE) Each class of property, plant & equipment are carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable any accumulated depreciation.

The depreciable amount of all PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

c. Employee Provisions Provision is made for the association's liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee provisions have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

d. Provisions Provisions are recgonised when the association has a legal or costructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic beneifts will result and that outflow can be reliably measured. Provisions are measered at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.

e. Cash on Hand Cash on hand includes cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

f. Accounts Receivable and Other Debtors Accounts receivable and other debtors include amounts due from members as well as amounts receivable from donors. Receivables expected to be collected within 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. All other receivables are classified as non-current assets.

g. Revenue & Other Income Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Grant & donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt. If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and servcies tax. NSW ICE SKATING ASSOCIATION A.B.N. 52 850 089 085

h. Membership in Advance Any membership fees received prior to balance date of 31 December 2020 in respect to 2021 year membership are recognised as Membership in Advance as at 31 December 2020.

i. Goods & Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the assets and liabilities statement.

These accounts have subsequently been closed and a new NAB Business Everyday Account has been opened in their place. All transactions on these accounts are in relation to either contributions received, net fundraising proceeds or scholarship payments.

2020………...

It has been an interesting year for everyone.

Our membership numbers were small compared to last year due to the closure of rinks, cancellation of competitions and restrictions on access to training bought on by the response to the COVID Pandemic by the Federal, State and Local Governments.

We have had several of our skaters’ transition from Aussie Skate to IJS throughout the year, and when we reopened, ICEZOO Skate Academy continued to grow, however our memberships remained low.We anticipate that our numbers will continue to grow next season.

We had 2 Synchronised Skating teams this year. Both are Revolution Teams, and both skated in State and National Championships.

Both Revolution teams also skated in the Doctor Porter Online Competition, receiving great results and coming first in their respective divisions.

Revolution Synchronised Skating teams continue to grow from strength to strength and we applaud their achievements throughout the year and extremely proud that they call ICE ZOO their home club.

As with 2019, this year’s focus will be on encouraging and supporting skaters to enter competitions. We hope our new members continue to enjoy their skating and develop friendships within the Club, as well as participating in the competitions and development programs the Club will offer this coming season.

Membership for 201920 :47 Members in total

Pre-Junior 35 Junior and Adult 12 Senior 0 Ordinary 0

Our membership Structure for 2020 continues to reflect both the IJS and Aussie Skate System.

ICE ZOO Skating Club hosted 1 Aussie Skate Competitions for NSW Ice Skating Association throughout 2020. The competition was well attended and supported by NSW and other clubs within the state. As with hosting any competition, there is a great deal of work and countless hours that are put in behind the scenes. We had a wonderful committee to help us run this event. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make this event run as smoothly as possible.

Regarding Skater and Club development this year, we have a lot to be proud of:

• Our reward system for skaters for 2020 had a number of applications for support. • We held END OF YEAR Presentation in December, thanking and rewarding our skaters who represented the club at competitions thought 2020. • We partnered ICE ZOO ice rink for the Christmas Show. • We ran a successful Club Championship Competition.

We are very proud of the programs and opportunities that we have offered our skaters this year, and we look forward to creating more learning and team building opportunities in the future. We continue to protect our club financially and work to improve our financial situation.

We continue to improve our Governance Policies and clearly defining the Committee members roles, as well as actively recruiting more and more volunteers.

We have a wonderful, strong team of volunteers and we have a very positive future. We have adopted open information and communication polices.

It has been an interesting and challenging year for everyone. I would like to thank the entire executive, parents and all other volunteers that were patient and cooperative with us in these unprecedented times.

Without the commitment of members to the club, we would not be able to provide opportunities to our skaters.

The dedication of our volunteers and members is much appreciated and valued. Working to grow and improve an organization requires teamwork and collaboration. Unity is strength; and when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.

Our level of teamwork and positivity that ICE ZOO Skating Club has demonstrated is second to none, and it is something to be immensely proud of. Everyone involved with our Committee genuinely wants to improve our club and we all work together toward a common goal - to help our skaters succeed, and I thank you all for that. I am looking forward to working with you all next season.

Thank you to NSWISA Board for their encouragement and inclusiveness throughout 2020

CLUB LCC Ice Skating Club

DATE 12th April 2021

MEMBERS 174 members – 132 skaters, 30 non-skaters, 12 life members

COVID-19 IMPACT This last year has been one that we weren’t expecting, but we are very proud of how much our Skating Club achieved, despite the hurdles that we all faced.

Due to statewide restrictions and lockdown, the LCC ice rink was closed on 23rd March, the ice surface was melted and drained, and the Liverpool Catholic Club organised much needed repairs and maintenance to our rink. Our club logos and lines were repainted on the concrete before resurfacing and refreezing the ice. On the 20th of June, 13 long weeks later, we had a very excited group of skaters and coaches come back onto fresh ice!

During the lockdown period, our dedicated coaches kept our skaters fit and motivated. Our committee organised Zoom meetings, where every Saturday morning, in the space of dining rooms, loungerooms, bedrooms or backyards, skaters would practise strengthening exercises and jumps, and increase their fitness levels. Off -ice training sessions were organised anywhere we could find to train - the park, around the lake, local netball courts and carparks. Fun challenges were set, and our skaters were engaged and encouraged. This helped set them up physically and mentally for a great season ahead. In the face of adversity, confusion and uncertainty, our skaters were motivated, strong, resilient and inspiring.

ACTIVITIES Pavel & Linda Aubrect and Yvette Dimitrov held their annual 5-day Summer Workshop from 21-15 January. As always it was very popular, with skaters from Freeskate 1 up to Junior level attending.

The NSW pre-season Training & Development Camp was held at LCC ice rink on the 1st of March, which was well attended by skaters from many clubs.

Development Squad resumed again after lockdown, with skaters continuing to strive and improve their edges, skating skills, jumps and spins, as well as off-ice training exercises to build their fitness, flexibilty and strength. This program is always met with a great deal of enthusiasm from skaters and coaches alike.

Coach Jean McGregor held her Sharpen Your Edge program in the October and December holiday breaks. This program has been steadily growing in numbers and is a great benefit to skaters. It aims to bridge the gap between Skate School lessons and the Figure Club, and includes on-ice edges and skating skills, and off- ice training.

Jean also runs a rapidly growing Inclusive Skating program for children and adults with challenges, impairments or disabilities. This is a marvellous initiative and addition to our club, it is truly something inspiring to see these new skaters develop and grow in their abilities.

COMPETITIONS Our skaters had a brilliant year of skating across all levels. We were very excited for our Aussie Skaters whose fantastic results meant our club retained the Perpetual NSW Aussie Skate Point Score Trophy for 2019. Despite some of the Artistic Competitions and Hollins Trophy being cancelled, we had many skaters with podium finishes at all IJS competitions across the state.

We were fortunate to be able to hold our home club competition, Triple Challenge, in October where our Club Champions were decided. It was a wonderful event held over 2 days, including Aussie Skate, Artistic and IJS Competitions, with the Pam Cavanagh Trophy being awarded to Louise & Bryan Grayson from PVFSC.

We are very proud of 3 of our skaters who were recipients of the 2020 Alan Blinn and Simone Moore Memorial Fund Scholarships - Sophie Moodie (Tier 2), Ainsley Dimitrov and Kryshtof Pradeaux (Tier 3).

We had 20 skaters represent LCCISC at the NSW State Championships, and 9 skaters go on to represent our Club and State at the National Online Competition, with fantastic results!

Penrith Valley Figure Skating Club Annual Report 2020

Date of Report: 13th April 2021 Club: Penrith Valley Figure Skating Club 2020 Members: 67 Skaters

Our memberships were a little lower than the previous year of 74, most likely due to the 3-month rink closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regardless of the COVID setback, our skaters continued to perform strongly in the Aussie skate and Artistic competition divisions. We are very proud to see a large number of our skaters consistently achieving podium places throughout the competition season.

Our IJS skaters were equally successful throughout the competition season, also showing a great consistency in achieving podium places. Representing PVFSC we had 15 skaters at the NSW State Championships and 5 skaters at the ISA Online National Competition. PVFSC skaters achieved the following results at these competitions:

NSW State Championships – 5 achieved 2nd Place & 2 achieved 3rd Place ISA Online National Competition – 1 achieved 2nd Place & 2 achieved 3rd place

Our club finances remain in a healthy position. With the income gained from memberships, hosting competitions, fundraising and the $1000 COVID grant received by NSWISA, we were able to give back to our members with: • an inhouse Showcase event held in October, • a continuation of our Discount Card scheme for our volunteers, • providing grants for our national representative skaters as per our Club Grant Policy, • a new media wall for our presentation podium backdrop, • a new set of podiums that could be separated into 3 to comply with COVID distancing rules, • some new stools for our judges to comply with the COVID distancing rules.

Unfortunately, we have had to cease our club off-ice program due to COVID however we are looking at replacing this in 2021 with a new improved Skills Squad program.

SYDNEY FIGURE SKATING CLUB INC 2020 ANNUAL GENERAL REPORT (FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 DECEMBER 2020)

The COVID-19 pandemic (COVID) brought rink closure, cancelled competitions, test sessions, training and development and uncertainty to our Club, rink and lives. In spite of this, Club members came together and made the most of every opportunity to train, skate and grow as a Club both during the height of the pandemic and after the rink re-opened. Skating sessions, competitions, test sessions, anything you care to name would never be the same, but that didn’t matter. The rink was open and the skaters ready to skate!

SFSC Membership In spite of COVID, our Club membership grew to 283 members (as at 31 December 2020), up from 279 in 2019. Members were drawn from literally all areas of skating: Singles, Artistic, Pairs, Dance and Synchronised. In Singles we had a wonderful mix of skaters – Adult (Aussie skate, Bronze – Elite Masters), Preliminary to Senior, and Aussie Skate.

Synchronised Ice Skating COVID didn’t slow down the expansion of the Club’s synchronised ice skating teams, Majestic Ice Australia, with preparations well in hand to revive the Advanced Adult Synchronised team for 2021. In the meantime, training continued in earnest for the Club’s regular teams – Basic Novice, Advanced Novice, Mixed Age, Junior and Senior (Team Unity).

Ice Dance Without any senior representative couples, the Club excitedly welcomed emerging talent Rayden and Erina Wong. Rayden and Erina successfully represented our Club in the Liverpool Triple Challenge Aussie Skate Division – Dance 1.

Pairs Hektor Giotopoulos-Moore, the Club’s current pairs skater was fondly farewelled early in the year when he jetted off to Russia with his coaches, Galina Pachin and Andrei Pachin, with whom he lived and trained. Hektor had a successful and happy stay in Russia, including training with fellow skaters Harley Windsor and Brendan Kerry. We look forward to welcoming him and his new Russian pairs skater to our Club in 2021.

In Memorium It is with great sadness that we mention the passing of Ekaterina (“Katia”) Alexandrovskaya, 18 July 2020, former pairs partner of Harley Windsor, Honorary Life member, and Australian Junior Worlds and Olympic representative pairs skater. Nothing could have prepared our Club and the wider skating community both here and overseas for such loss.

On 26 July 2020 the Club and the Ice Skating Club of NSW Co-Operative Ltd trading as Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink (COIR) jointly hosted a memorial service for Katia at the rink which was live streamed via the Club’s YouTube account. Due to COVID restrictions only a very restricted number of members of the ice skating community, Harley Windsor, and Harley’s family members were permitted to attend. Of particular note was the moving contribution by Harley’s family and the release of the two doves, representing a final farewell to Katia.

The Club will continue liaise with coaches and members to ensure that Katia’s achievements, and indeed all of our Club’s Olympic representative skaters, are celebrated and not forgotten.

Mental Health A key focus for the remainder of 2020 was ensuring that the Club did whatever it could to support our member’s and the rink’s coaches’ mental and emotional well-being during this difficult time. One of the ways that this was achieved was the Club joining with Sports Chaplaincy Australia to provide a safe space to meet with and chat with experienced grief counsellors either one or one or in a group setting. Mental health will remain a key focus for the Club in 2021 and beyond.

Competitions Club Competitions Due to COVID all 2020 competitions scheduled at the rink were cancelled, with the exception of the combined SFSC Club Championships and Trophy Night held 8-9 August 2020. This competition was one of the first major competitions after the rink re-opened. The competition was fully subscribed and a huge success. Competition attendees were happy with how well it ran and the high level of COVID compliance, which ensured a safe environment for skaters to compete in.

State/National and International Competitions. Special mention is made of the following skaters and teams that represented our Club on the podium at the State and National levels.

State Championships 2020 • Adult Elite Masters Ladies - Sarah Cullen (1st) • Adult Gold Ladies - Ilona Babakhanova (2nd) • Adult Silver Men - Jonathan David (2nd) • Senior Ladies - Romy Grogan (1st) • Junior Ladies - Vlada Vasilev (1st) • Advanced Novice Ladies - Trisha Tong (1st), Tamara Abagi (3rd) • Intermediate Ladies - Danielle Vasallo (1st) • Intermediate Men - Dominik Mautner (1st) • Intermediate Novice Ladies - Maya Milanovic (3rd) • Elementary Men - Matthew Chan (1st) • Preliminary Men - Rui Takada (1st), Rico Rui (2nd). • Team Unity Senior synchronised skating team (1st) • Majestic Ice Junior synchronised skating team (1st) • Majestic Ice Mixed Age synchronised skating team (1st) • Majestic Ice Advanced Novice synchronised skating team (1st) • Majestic Ice Basic Novice synchronised skating team (1st)

skating team, Team Unity, were to have skated at the ISU World Synchronised Skating Championships 2020 in Lake Placid, USA on April 3-4 2020.

Awards Special mention to Valda Vasiliev as a Tier 1 recipient of NSWISA’s 2020 Alan Blinn & Simone Moore memorial Fund. Due to COVID the West Ashfield Club which normally sponsors various awards did not sponsor any for 2020.

Project Ice-O-Lation During the rink closure, the Club set about thinking of ways to keep our skaters and coaches connected and fit - mentally and emotionally. One of those initiatives was Project Ice-O-Lation which ran from 13 April 2020 to 12 June 2020. It was wonderful to see members from all of our skating disciplines and age groups (including non-skating parents) don their athletic gear and get down to work, joining in on the following classes: • General Fitness - Scott Weekes • Off-ice Spins, Jumps and exercise programmes - Adam Zalegowski • Off-ice Flexibility Stretch and Ballet Technique for skaters - Paula Jagodzinska • Ballet – Barre and Stretch for skaters - Vanessa Price • Body Movement - Greg Merriman

When the rink reopened, coaches needed to be back on the ice coaching and the programme was unable to continue, much to the disappointment of our members.

Tests This year saw test sessions occur a little differently at COIR, due to a combination of COVID shutting the rink and sessions needing to be cancelled by NSWISA due to ice hire costs. In spite of these challenges NSWISA and SFSC worked together to find ways to hold test sessions at Canterbury on the following dates:

• Sunday 8 March 2020 (evening), with 52 skaters registered • Tuesday 21 July 2020 (4pm-6.30pm), with approximately 6 skaters registered • Friday 28 August 2020 (3.45pm-5.30pm), with approximately 9 skaters registered • 13 December 2020 (3.30pm- 5.50pm), with 36 skaters tested

All test sessions proceeded smoothly, and skaters are to be congratulated on their excellent results throughout the year.

Training and Development Due to COVID, the Club was only able to host one of our two proposed Jump Start Clinics, 18 October 2020 (8.30am - 11.30am). The program was designed for Adult skaters (Aussie Skate and Bronze-Silver levels) and Aussie Skate level skaters (Novice 1- Freeskate) and ran at full capacity, with a strong show of both SFSC and non-SFSC club skaters.

Presentation Night SFSC hosted its inaugural combined Presentation Night and Christmas Party on 12 December 2020 at the rink.

Club members, family, friends and our wonderful COIR coaches were treated to a fun-filled night complete with wood-fired pizza, gelato, a lolly guessing competition, a Christmas dress up competition with prizes

from iSkate, ice games, a disco, the ever popular photobooth, and a special visit from Father Christmas who also dazzled with his fine skating skills!

Special mention goes to the following skaters who were recognised for their particular skill, hard work and/or contribution to the Club: • The Wendy Langton Encouragement Award was awarded to Tara Winton • The Wayne Disbery Award for Sportsmanship was awarded to Vlada Vasiliev • The Andrei Filipov Award for Artistic Merit was awarded to Matthew Chan in the Junior category and Trisha Tong in the Senior category. • The Ritchie Memorial Trophy for synchronized ice skating was awarded to Talia Ku • Rina Jiang and Emily Lilley-Bull who were nominated Club Captains for 2021

Grants Local Sport Grant Program The Club was grateful to receive a $1,000.00 grant from the NSW Government Office of Sport, Local Sports Grants Program, to assist with post COVID requirements such as extra on-ice harnesses, video recording equipment to live-stream competitions and materials to make the judges’ benches COVID compliant.

Community Building Partnership Program In late November the Club received notification that it was successful in receiving a $5,000.00 grant through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program. The grant money will make a valuable contribution towards the Club purchasing the Champion Electric Off-ice spinner and off-ice harness systems.

Special Thanks To say that this year has been a busy year, is an understatement. The Club could not have given back to its members without everybody coming together with both Committee members and Club volunteers. The following Committee members were elected at the SFSC AGM on 25 February 2020.

Executive Ordinary Committee President - Evelene Goodsir-Cullen Christina Grogan - Membership (until August 2020) Vice President - Alicia Ng David Ledda - Competition Convenor Secretary - Karen Samaseia Yvonne Hart - Aussie skate Liaison Officer Treasurer - Ying Tang (until November 2020) Corri Zerebeski (November 2020 onwards) Sub- Committees Other Significant Positions of Responsibility Competition (Catering) - Helen Lutz Member Information Protection Officer - Helen Lutz IT - Alex Fitzsimmons and Corri Zerebeski. Sydney Ice Theatre Club report. 2020

Club : Sydney Ice Theatre Date 8th April 2021 Members 27 2020 was a hard year for the club, along with all other organisations. We appreciate the help of NSWISA during this difficult time, both financial and in the regular updates and advice once skating resumed Finances : The club finished the year in a healthy financial situation following a successful Christmas show. Competition Season: 2020 was quiet for the team, however the team did enter the STC and triple challenge. The team being successful with 1st place in competitions they participated. The Edgehogs team also were awarded 1st place in their division Sydney Theatre Cup: This was a small competition with 4 entries held in a COVID safe manner. This was a good time for teams to get back on the ice. Christmas Show: The show as ‘Toy Story on Ice’, it was devised by Linda Aubrecht and featured all 3 of her associated teams. The show sold out within a few days with the new smaller audience numbers. An article in the local paper lead to a waiting list on try booking but fortunately audience numbers were relaxed up to half capacity. All seats were sold without any additional publicity due to the small event numbers. We have booked 3 shows for 2021 rather than the usual 2 in order to cater for the increased demand with the possibility of reduced seating again. This is very exciting for the club
