Again, a similar number to last week met a flying trade with a new record top price for Messrs Bryant of with their 783kg Limousin at 207p/kg grossing £1,620, selling to David Ellis of Lelant. Another Limousin from Messrs Bryant sold at 188p/kg to David King of Exeter with a third older cow at 174p/kg matching the price of a Charolais from Mr Hopper of Poundstock. The best dairy cow at 131p/kg for John Heller of Blackwater selling to Dawn West Devon and the plainer sorts met strong competition for further fattening.

An increased and sizeable entry for mid-May with confidence following rain saw a consistently strong trade throughout. Mainly younger cattle on offer including good runs of stirks from Keith Pascoe of Sithney, Messrs George of Tresillian and Messrs Grylls of Kenwyn, the older section with a super pen of named sire Angus steers for new store vendor Messrs Brewer & Brewer of St Merryn topping at £1,225 per head and yet more Devon x steers from Tresco Estate on the Isles of Scilly at £1,180. Leading the heifers was a single Simmental x at £1,075 for Kevin Thomas of Helston with David Lugg of St Martin next with a Blue x at £935.

After the great expectations of last week’s flyer, the prices felt somewhat deflated. As seen throughout the south west on Wednesday, the averages were back. However, on the year we are still way ahead. Numbers coming forward nationally are having a notable impact. Premium Texel x lambs from Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, topped at £143 (337p/kg) purchased by Trevarthens of Roskrow. A fine run of shapely butchers lambs from Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey of St Keverne, with their best pick 44kg lambs selling to £141.50, purchased by Jaspers of South Petherwin.
