1 /9 (2.18/3) 1.3 China welcomes Sao Tome's split with Taiwan China said Wednesday it welcomed Sao Tome and Principe's decision to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a move that comes as US President-elect Donald Trump questions Washington's policy towards the self-ruled island. The small west African nation suspended ties with China in 1997, when it chose to officially recognise Taiwan, which split from the mainland in 1949 after a civil war. Beijing has repeatedly asserted its belief that there is only "one China" and that the island remains part of its territory awaiting reunification. Tensions between the mainland and what it refers to as a "renegade province" have heightened since president Tsai Ing-wen, who leads Taiwan's pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, took office in May. Adding fuel to that fire, Trump angered Beijing with comments earlier this month suggesting he could use recognition of the island as a bargaining chip to extract trade deals from China. "We welcome Sao Tome and Principe back onto the correct path of the one China principle," the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement on its website. "Persisting in the one China principle is the direction of international popular sentiment and an irresistible trend," it added. Sao Tome's decision leaves Taiwan with formal diplomatic ties to only 21 states, including just two in Africa -- Swaziland and Burkina Faso. It also has relations with the Vatican, its most high profile supporter. Sao Tome's decision follows a precedent shattering congratulatory phone call from Tsai to Trump, which angered Beijing. The billionaire politician further raised the temperature among the Chinese leadership by publicly questioning US reluctance to recognise Taiwan. "I don't know why we have to be bound by a one China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade," he told Fox News earlier this month. Tsai is preparing for a trip next month to meet with diplomatic allies in Latin America, where she is expected to pass through the US, which may irk China.

3 /9 3.2 FOREX-Dollar holds gains at 14-yr peak on Trump trade, yield allure (1.02/3) By Hideyuki Sano and Yuzuha Oka TOKYO, Dec 21 (Reuters) - The dollar hovered near a 14-year high against the euro on Wednesday, supported by expectations of U. S. interest rates rising more rapidly during the incoming Trump Administration. In thin trading ahead of year-end holidays, the euro last stood at $1.0413 after slipping below $1.0352 on Tuesday, a level last seen in January 2003. The weak euro helped to push the dollar's trade-weighted index against a basket of six major currencies to touch 103.65, also a 14-year high. The index was last at 103.30. "The dollar looks pretty strong. Although there are no fresh trading factors as we head into Christmas, we see dollar buying whenever the currency slips," said Shinichiro Kadota, chief forex strategist at Barclays. "We haven't seen anything that could change its Trump-driven rally," he added. The dollar index has risen 5.8 percent since Trump was elected. He has pledged big tax cuts and spending increases and threatened to impose tariffs on imports from China and Mexico. Investors rushed to U. S. assets as they bet his expansionary fiscal policy will boost U. S. growth, inflation and interest rates. The dollar was at 117.67 yen, coming within reach of its 10 1/2-month high of 118.66 touched on Dec 15. Selling in the yen gathered pace after the Bank of Japan maintained its policy settings on Tuesday and when Governor Haruhiko Kuroda doused talk the BOJ might consider raising the target for the 10-year bond yield next year. Kuroda also said he did not see recent yen falls as a problem for Japan's economy, noting that a weak currency helps accelerate inflation by boosting import costs. "The markets took Kuroda's comments as rather tolerant to the weaker yen," said Yunosuke Ikeda, chief FX strategist at Nomura Holdings in Tokyo. "Kuroda's remark encouraged the yen selling, as well as the widening U. S.-Japan interest rate differentials. Investors tend to make money from carry trade when markets are relatively quiet ahead of Christmas holidays," added Ikeda. With central banks in Europe and Japan committing to very loose monetary policies, investors continued to pile into the dollar. The Federal Reserve, which hiked rates last week, signalled three more increases next year, versus its previous projection of two. U. S. Treasury yields rose after Fed Chair Janet Yellen's upbeat labour market comments on Monday reinforced convictions of more frequent U. S. interest rate hikes next year. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield last stood at 2.566 percent, within the sight of a 27-month- high of 2.641 percent hit last week. The British pound fell to one-month low of $1.2313 on Monday, pressured by renewed uncertainty over the process by which Britain will leave the European Union. Looking ahead, traders are casting an eye on Italy's troubled bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena, which needs to raise 5 billion euros ($5.2 billion) by the end of the year to avoid being wound up by the European Central Bank. 4 /9 3.8 Nikkei edges up to one-year highs, tracking U. S. gains

(1.00/3) TOKYO, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei share average edged up to a one-year peak on Wednesday in thin trading ahead of the holidays, tracking U. S. shares higher on expectations that U. S. President-elect Donald Trump's policies will stoke growth and inflation. The Nikkei ended morning trade 0.2 percent higher at 19,522.80. In the previous session, it finished at its highest closing level since early December 2015, and was poised to set another milestone. "Buying of names boosted by yen weakness is enough to overcome profit-taking by sellers, leading to a positive rise in the Nikkei," said Hiroki Allen, chief representative of Superfund Japan in Tokyo. The dollar was slightly weaker on the day but remained close to a 10-1/2-month high of 118.66 touched on Dec 15. In addition to getting a tailwind from a recently weaker yen, Japanese shares have also tracked U. S. shares, which have surged on expectations that the incoming administration of President-elect Trump will boost fiscal spending, growth and inflation. "Volumes are low, so if you have a direction for a momentum trade like we have, it just pushes it more," said Gavin Parry, managing director of Parry International Trading in Hong Kong. "But as we get closer to the 20,000 level, we tend to hit lulls," he said, noting key nearby psychological levels for both the Nikkei as well as the Dow Jones industrial average. The latter ended just 25 points shy of it on Tuesday. Underpinning sentiment, Japan's government upgraded its overall assessment of the economy on Wednesday, hiking its view of household spending, exports and business sentiment, saying consumers' mindsets are improving and exports to Asia are recovering. "The economy is on a moderate recovery, while delays in improvement can be seen in some parts," the Cabinet Office said in its monthly economic report, marking the first upgrade since March 2015. On Tuesday, the Bank of Japan concluded its two-day meeting and kept monetary policy steady, and also issued a more positive view of the economy. The BOJ's assessment came after the U. S. Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time in a year last week, and hinted further hikes could come at a faster pace than the market had expected. On Wednesday, shares of precision motor maker Nidec Corp added 1.8 percent, after the company said it would expand its plan to repurchase its own shares to 5 million shares from 3 million. The broader Topix was flat at 1,552.35, while the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 edged up slightly to 13,917.58. (Reporting by Tokyo markets team; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

8 /9 1.2 Everton striker Romelu Lukaku poised to sign club record £100,000-a-week deal Romelu Lukaku is set to become Everton’s first £100,000-a-week player as he edges closer to signing a new deal at Goodison Park. The Belgium striker’s current contract ends in June 2019, but Everton have been in negotiations with Lukaku’s agent, Mino Raiola, since earlier this summer when he saw his wish to rejoin Chelsea blocked. Raiola attended the Merseyside derby on Monday night and was with Everton’s majority investor Farhad Moshiri. Raiola also enjoys a strong relationship with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and talks about extending Lukaku’s terms have developed quite smoothly. Everton manager Ronald Koeman said last week — after the club announced new deals for Leighton Baines, Gareth Barry and Mason Holgate — that Lukaku’s situation would be looked at next and Everton will be hopeful of formalising an agreement early in the New Year. Meanwhile James McCarthy, will undergo a scan on Wednesday to discover how badly he was injured during the agonisingly late 1-0 defeat to . The Republic of Ireland midfielder was substituted with what Koeman described as a hamstring issue. McCarthy, who has had long-standing hamstring problems, had been excellent in the first 45 minutes, but he failed to reappear for the second half after he had been treated on the pitch when he appeared to hurt himself stretching to make a challenge. With Everton’s Boxing Day clash at Leicester in mind, goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is also being assessed. The Dutchman, 34, was taken off on Monday following a second-half collision with team-mate Baines.

9 /9 1.0 'I don't know what that is, and I don't want to know!' Precocious kids try unique Christmas foods from around the world - including veal and cabbage - and they are NOT impressed People hold very dearly do their traditions, especially around the holidays. So when a group of kids were asked to try different kinds of Christmas foods from around the world, it's no surprise they were mostly unimpressed. In a new set of videos for Cut.com , a group of children test out a handful of international cuisines, tasting what people in New Zealand, the Dominican Republic, Japan, , and Poland eat to ring in December 25. Adorably, the kids then offered their very honest opinions, which conveyed pretty clearly that none plan to move to another country any time soon. New Zealand: BBQ crawfish and meat with pavlova for dessert One little boy mistakenly identifies the crawfish as lobster, and he does not seem impressed. 'I don't know what that is, and I don't want to know,' says another little boy, pointing at it. Though a few don't seem to mind the meat, they all seem to focus more of their attention on the dessert. But when asked why people in New Zealand eat barbecue for Christmas — the interviewer seems to be trying to reveal to the American kids that Christmas in the southern hemisphere falls during summer — one boy answers that they must eat it to 'celebrate the birth of Jesus'. Dominican Republic: Pig roast and rice with pigeon peas and coconut milk A little boy seems confused by the pork and gives it a try. After chewing for a bit, he spits it out and looks at it — then, apparently noticing nothing wrong, puts it back in his mouth. Another seems to like the rice, while a third is baffled that the food in front of him is consumed on Christmas. One totally-unimpressed boy remarks that the local Christmas cuisine is 'nice for the cat'. Japan: Fried chicken and Christmas cake The children all seem thrilled to have something familiar placed in front of them, with one excitedly repeating: 'This is happening, this is happening!' 'It's a brilliant country that eats chicken for Christmas!' he adds, hugging a bucked of KFC breasts and legs. Another boy, who seems to like it, is baffled, though — he appears to believe that Japanese families have to come to the US to get KFC. A little boy named Ernie dives right into the cake, scooping up globs of it with his hands and stuffing it into his mouth. Poland: Dumpling, golabki (cabbage rolls), and barszcz (beetroot soup) Several of the kids think the dumpling looks familiar, but are clearly more used to Asian dumplings than Polish ones, and most spit it out. They remark that the barszcz is 'gross' and looks like blood, making horrified faces as they eat it. After eating, Ernie once again steals the show, lifting up his shirt to show off how big his tummy is. Argentina: Vitel tonne (veal and tuna mayo), cider, and pan dulce for dessert Only one little girl seems to like the cider, chugging it down while her brother check out the vitel tonne. The pan dulce, unsurprisingly, is more of a hit with its sugar-crusted top.
