Stehr ([email protected]) Abstract. Andean watersheds present important snowfall accumulation mainly during the winter which is later melted during spring and part of the summer. The effect of snowmelt on the water balance can be critical to sustain agriculture activities, 10 hydropower generation, urban water supply and wildlife. In Chile 25% of the territory between the Valparaiso and Araucanía Regions comprise areas where snow precipitation occurs. As in many other difficult-to-access regions of the world, in the Chilean Andes there is a lack of hydrological data like discharge, snow courses, snow depths, which complicate the analysis of important hydrological processes (e.g. water availability). Remote sensing provides a promising opportunity to enhance the assessment and monitoring of the spatial and temporal variability of snow characteristics, like Snow Cover Area (SCA) and 15 Snow Cover Dynamic (SCD). In the above mentioned context the objectives of this study are to evaluate the suitability of MOD10A2 to estimate SCA and to assess SCD at five watersheds (Aconcagua, Rapel, Maule, Biobío and Toltén) located in the Chilean Andes, between latitude 32.0ºS and 39.5ºS. -

African Countries are Awakening Hope for a Better Tomorrow with IDA Statement by Representatives of 49 Sub-Saharan African (SSA) Countries IDA19 Fourth Replenishment Meeting, December 12-13, 2019, Stockholm, Sweden 1. IDA countries have only 10 years to achieve the globally agreed targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Given that it takes 9 years for pledges under any IDA cycle to be fully paid up, IDA19 is therefore, the last replenishment to help finance the SDGs in the time left to 2030. 2. Africa as a continent is making progress towards the SDGs. Growth in many economies has outpaced global benchmarks. More children are in school and health service coverage is expanding. A continent-wide free-trade agreement shows regional cooperation is alive and deepening, including in building roads and power lines that bring countries together and make markets bigger. The support of donors to the 18th replenishment of the International Development Association (IDA18) has been pivotal and has underpinned the partnership between African countries and the World Bank Group (WBG) that has never been stronger. Indeed, Africa’s absorptive capacity to carefully use concessional funds has ensured that the pace of commitment for IDA18 has been record-breaking. 3. We want to acknowledge the strong partnership between IDA and most of our countries. We commend all donors for the important role that IDA has been playing in the transformation agenda of most SSA countries. We are happy with the negotiated IDA19 package and the continuation of all the special themes of IDA18, the Private Sector Window, and the improvements to the various facilities especially under Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCV). -

Randy Weston was not the first musician to do so, however he was chosen for this thesis because his experiences, influences, and music clearly demonstrate the importance traditional African culture has played in his life. Randy Weston was born during the Harlem Renaissance. His parents, who lived in Brooklyn at that time, were influenced by the political views that predominated African American culture. Weston’s father, in particular, felt a strong connection to his African heritage and instilled the concept of pan-Africanism and the writings of Marcus Garvey firmly into Randy Weston’s consciousness. -

Sediment dynamics and improvised control technologies in the Athi River drainage basin, Kenya SHADRACK MULEI KITHIIA Postgraduate Programme in Hydrology, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi, PO Box 30197, 00100 GPO, Nairobi, Kenya [email protected] Abstract In Kenya, the changing of land-use systems from the more traditional systems of the 1960s to the present mechanized status, contributes enormous amounts of sediments due to water inundations. The Athi River drains areas that are subject to intense agricultural, industrial, commercial and population settlement activities. These activities contribute immensely to the processes of soil erosion and sediment transport, a phenomenon more pronounced in the middle and lower reaches of the river where the soils are much more fragile and the river tributaries are seasonal in nature. Total Suspended Sediments (TSS) equivalent to sediment fluxes of 13 457, 131 089 and 2 057 487 t year-1 were recorded in the headwater areas, middle and lower reaches of the river, respectively. These varying trends in sediment transport and amount are mainly due to the chemical composition of the soil coupled with the land-soil conservation measures already in practice, and which started in the 1930s and reached their peak in the early 1980s. This paper examines trends in soil erosion and sediment transport dynamics progressively downstream. The land-use activities and soil conservation, control and management technologies, which focus on minimizing the impacts of overland flow, are examined to assess the economic and environmental sustainability of these areas, communal societal benefits and the country in general. -

This overview report is first report among a set of six reports comprising of the overview report and five city-specific reports for Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. Reasonable planning of urban density is the key to sustainable development. By using the spatial population data of 2000, 2010, and 2020, this study aims to explore the changes in population density and spatial patterns of informal settlements in Nairobi. The result of spatial correlation analysis shows that the informal settlements are the centers of population growth and agglomeration and are mostly distributed in the belts of 4 and 8 km from Nairobi’s central business district (CBD). A series of population density models in Nairobi were examined; it showed that the correlation between population density and distance to CBD was positive within a 4 km area, while for areas outside 8 km, they were negatively related. The factors determining population density distribution are also discussed. We argue that where people choose to settle is a decision process between the expected benefits and the cost of living; the informal settlements around the 4-km belt in Nairobi has become the choice for most poor people. -

Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago of 116 islands located in the Western Indian Ocean east of East Africa. Across all 116 islands, Seychelles has a total land area of 455 square kilometers. Zambia has the second largest proportion of land under protected status in Southern Africa with approximately 225,000 km2 designated as protected areas. This equates to approximately 30% of the total land cover and of this, approximately 8% as National Parks (NPs) and 22% as Game Management Areas (GMA). The remaining protected land consists of bird sanctuaries, game ranches, forest and botanical reserves, and national heritage sites (Mwanza 2006). The Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), is potentially the world’s largest conservation area, spanning five southern African countries; Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, centred around the Caprivi-Chobe-Victoria Falls area (KAZA 2015). Parks within Zambia that fall under KAZA are: Liuwa Plain, Kafue, Mosi-oa-Tunya and Sioma Ngwezi (Peace Parks Foundation 2013). GCF is dedicated to securing a future for all giraffe populations and (sub)species in the wild. -

The study is based on a new initiated research co-operation between Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre (HOORC) in Maun, Botswana, part of University of Botswana and the Chair of Vegetation Ecology of the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany funded by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft within their programme “Forschung für Naturräume“ for young scientists. Under the topic “Elements in Conflict - Anthropogenic fires in the RAMSAR-wetland Okavango-Delta (Botswana)”, prerequisites were set for future co- operative research projects between HOORC and TUM during August 2000 to August 2001. Besides the theoretical introduction to the ecology of the study area ‘Okavango Delta’, this period was primarily used to gain first practical experience on the vegetation and the fire ecology of the Okavango Delta during the stays in Botswana in October 2000 and March/April/Mai 2001. -
