THE SECRETARY-GENERAL fa.

21 January 1998

Dear Mr. Popovski,

May I thank you for the very kind letter and the thoughtful present that you have sent me on the occasion of United Nations Day 1997. I apologize for the delay in replying. Unfortunately, the package was misplaced and I saw it only a few days ago.

Your gift is an expression of your unusual talents, which you have devoted to the cause of peace. It is a symbol of the desire for peace and solidarity that resides in the hearts of the people of your country.

I also wish to congratulate you on the important work you have done as President of your country's Red Cross, which I understand was admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies during your fruitful term of office.

Allow me to express my gratitude to you for all your work in the service of humanity and the continued support for the United Nations.

Yours sincerely.

KofiTA. Annan

I well realize that busy as you are with so many pressing issues, this message from the first United Nations preventive peace-keeping operation may not necessarily reach you directly. If it does, however, I hope you will be able to spare a few moments to learn of a prominent Macedonian painter, Mr. Zivko Popovski, specializing in floral images. Mr. Popovski is a devout friend of UNPREDEP with an outstanding record of support for us, when he was President of his Country's Red Cross.

In the past two decades or so, Mr. Popovski, a public figure in bis country, has presented his paintings to numerous heads of State or Government as well as to the two predecessors of yours. He has also had exhibitions of his flower-like paintings at United Nations Headquarters in New York and Geneva. On the occasion of the United Nations Day 1997, he opened an unique exhibition available on Internet, entitled "Fifty-two Flowers of Peace for the Fifty-two Years of the United Nations".

During the inauguration of the exhibition, which I had the pleasure to attend, Mr. Popovski requested me to transmit to you one of his paintings, accompanied by a personal letter in Macedonian and English as well as a book on his creative work, which are attached.

A brief acknowledgment to the artist from you, a draft of which I am taking the liberty of attaching, would be of special meaning to the artist.

Sincerely yours,

Heni yk J. Sokalski Assistant Secretary-General His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan Secretary-General United Nations United Nations Plaza New York, N.Y. 10017, U.S.A. ROUTING SLIP FICHE DE TRANSMISSION
