Instructions and Tips for Viewing DEC Data in Google Earth Viewing DEC’s Data in Google Earth Pro: 1. Download free Google Earth Pro software from https://www.google.com/earth/versions/ Scroll down and download Google Earth Pro on Desktop 2. Go to DEC’s Google Earth Data webpage at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/42978.html 3. Download a data set by clicking on the Google Earth icon next to the data set’s name. 4. You will be given the option to save or open the file. It is recommended that you save the file for easier access later. Select “Save” and choose a location to save the file in. Select “Open” if you want to open Google Earth to view the data without saving it to your computer. 5. Double‐click the saved file to open it in Google Earth. Alternately, open Google Earth and go to “File” then “Open…”. Select the file you’ve downloaded and saved, and then click “Open”. 6. The “Places” section on the left contains the list of features. 2. Some data sets have multiple folders to help organize the information. Use the “+/‐” button next to a folder to open or close it. 2 | Page Instructions and Tips for Viewing DEC Data in Google Earth 3. Double‐click on a feature name in the “Places” menu to zoom‐to that feature on the map. 4. Use the tools in the upper right to move around the map, zoom in or out, and tilt the map. 5. You can zoom‐in and tilt the map to get a better view of the landscape. Getting More Information About Features: 1. Click once on a feature name in the “Places” menu to open a balloon containing information about that point. You can also see the information balloon by clicking once on a point, line, or polygon on the map. 2. Some information balloons contain data tables or pictures. 3 | Page Instructions and Tips for Viewing DEC Data in Google Earth 3. If a feature is not labeled, move the mouse pointer over the point, line, or polygon and its name will appear. 4. Click on the links (blue text) inside the information balloons to get even more information from DEC’s website. 5. The website will automatically open in Google Earth’s Browser. To return to the map, click on the “Back to Google Earth” button in the top left corner. 4 | Page Instructions and Tips for Viewing DEC Data in Google Earth 6. If you want the links to open in a new browser window, click on “Tools” and then “Options”. Click on the “General” tab, select the option that says, “Show web results in external browser”, and then click “OK”. 7. If you’ve found a place you’d like to visit, Google Earth can give you driving directions. Click on the “To here” link at the bottom of the information balloon. Then, enter your starting address in the “From” field on the “Directions” tab in the top left corner of Google Earth. 8. Step‐by‐step directions are shown in the left‐hand column and your driving path will be shown on the map. (Note: Driving Directions are only available for features represented as points.)     Android Working with Google Maps The Google Maps API for Android provides developers with the means to create apps with localization functionality. Version 2 of the Maps API was released at the end of 2012 and it introduced a range of new features including 3D, improved caching, and vector tiles. Step 1 Google Maps Android API V2 is part of Google’s Play services SDK, which you must download and configure to work with your existing Android SDK installation in Eclipse to use the mapping functions. In Eclipse, choose Window > Android SDK Manager. In the list of packages that appears scroll down to the Extrasfolder and expand it. Select the Google Play services checkbox and install the package. Step 2 Once Eclipse downloads and installs the Google Play services package, you can import it into your workspace. Select File > Import > Android > Existing Android Code into Workspace then browse to the location of the downloaded Google Play services package on your computer. It should be inside your downloaded Android SDK directory, at the following location:extras/google/google_play_services/libproject/google-play-services_lib. Get a Google Maps API Key Step 1 To access the Google Maps tools, you need an API key, which you can obtain through a Google account. The key is based on your Android app debug or release certificate. If you have released apps before, you might have used the keytool resource to sign them. In that case, you can use the keystore you generated at that time to get your API key. Otherwise you can use the debug keystore, which Eclipse uses automatically when you generate your apps during development.

Select the Google Earth Pro icon “ ,” or search in the start menu for “Google Earth Pro.” When Google Earth Pro has been opened, you will get this screen. A “Start-Up Tip” window will automatically open when Google Earth Pro starts. These include hints and instructions about many popular features in the program. If you do not want to see this window each time you start the program, you can uncheck the “Show tips at start-up” box and then either click “close” or click the red “X” at the top right of the window (see above). After the “Start-Up Tip” window is closed, you will see a view of the earth, with a “Tour Guide” ribbon at the bottom of the main, map area of the screen. The “Tour Guide” will show you photos that may be of interest in the region you are viewing. You can scroll through them to explore the feature or the surrounding area of what you are interested in. These are often used when creating customized tours or videos in Google Earth Pro. 2 Google Earth Pro You may instead wish to maximize your viewing area in the map window.
