Oakland Athletics Send Down Shane Peterson and Jemile Weeks Author : Robert D. Cobb The strength of the defending American League West champion Oakland Athletics roster is their depth and it came as no surprise today that Shane Peterson and Jemile Weeks got sent to Triple A Sacramento. With Peterson he's an outfielder and already on the roster are Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp, Josh Reddick, Chris Young and Seth Smith. In the minors he also spent some time at first playing in 123 games over five seasons, yet Brandon Moss is a lock for the starting spot. Bob Melvin has difficult task of determining which outfielder to use as the designated hitter and who will sit. For Peterson at the age of 25 with no major league experience it didn't make sense for him to sit on the bench and not get any at-bats, which is why he ended up in Sacramento. During the spring in 25 games he hit .396 with 19 hits, nine runs scored, six doubles, a triple, a home run, five walks and 11 strikeouts. As for Weeks he got off to a fast start this spring in looked like he had put his miserable 2012 season behind him when a shoulder injury sidelined him. During his absence Eric Sogard and Adam Rosales made the most of their opportunity leaving Weeks behind. Scott Sizemore also is getting an extended look at second after returning from a knee injury that forced him to miss all of 2012. Jed Lowrie acquired from the Houston Astros has locked up the starting shortstop role as Hiroyuki Nakajima hasn't adjusted well at the plate or on defense and has recently spent time at third and second. As for Weeks he hit .370, with 10 hits, two doubles, a home run, six rbi, walked four times and struck out once. The A's right-hander was charged with a career-high 10 earned runs in a 17-7 blowout defeat to open a three-game series. The A's have now lost 11 straight to the Yankees. Cahill allowed nine hits and lasted just two-plus innings in the shortest start of his career. After being staked to a 2-0 lead, he allowed five runs in the bottom of the second. Then he allowed Nick Swisher's three-run homer in the third, as the Yankees batted around in a nine-run rally. Michael Wuertz relieved Cahill in the third but fared no better, walking in two runs before allowing Mark Teixeira's grand slam. Cahill's 10 earned runs were the most allowed by an A's starter since Gio Gonzalez surrendered 11 to the Twins on July 20, 2009. His batting average led major league rookies with 350 or more plate appearances. But more than anything, Weeks' speed and exciting play provided a shot in the arm for a team -- and fan base -- that suffered through a 74-88 record. A's general manager Billy Beane proceeded to trade away several high-profile players during the offseason, but he labeled the switch-hitting Weeks as the one untouchable player on his major league roster. "He's a great talent, a unique talent," Beane said. "And he's only got a half-year in the major leagues.

A’s News Clips, Friday, October 16, 2009 One of the best teams ever Bruce Jenkins, Chronicle Staff Writer Spring training brought its usual spirit of renewal in 1990, but it wasn't the same around the A's camp. In a sense, the ground was still trembling. Oakland had just won a World Series interrupted by earthquake, rendering more trivial matters insignificant against the burden of recovery. At the sight of Dave Stewart, you pictured him helping victims amid the rubble of the Nimitz Freeway. A glimpse of Terry Steinbach and you were back at Candlestick as he held his wife, Mary, so tightly on the field. Even the most notable game details seemed vague, to the point where the first two games (in Oakland) were - and remain - a virtual blank. This became the forgotten World Series, never to gain its proper recognition. Combine the fateful Oct. 17 with the latter-day stigma of steroids, and you have an A's team struggling for a place in history - although it's hardly a mystery in this corner. Without hesitation, I rank the '89 A's among the five greatest teams in history. Funny thing about those "top five" lists. They tend to expand, uncontrollably. Can a surfer really isolate his five best waves? Would a jazz aficionado be able to stop after naming five great sax solos? How about your five favorite songs, or movies? It's the top five, and it's 38-deep. In baseball, any such examination begins with the 1927 Yankees of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and so many more.

Gray is 11-3 with a 2.01 ERA and .192 opponents batting average in 16 games, all starts, for the Commodores this year. In 107.2 innings he has struck out 115 and walked 39 while allowing just four home runs. His season continues this weekend when Vanderbilt squares off against Oregon State in the NCAA Super Regionals with the winner of the best of three series advancing to the College World Series. Gray was a Second-team All-SEC selection in 2010 after going 10-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 19 games, 16 starts. He led the team in strikeouts (113), innings pitched (108.2) and walks (48). The 5-11, 200-pound right-hander was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2009, logging a 5-1 mark and a 4.30 ERA in 22 appearances. The 18th overall selection in the draft, Gray was named as having the Best Secondary Pitch among College Pitchers by Baseball America. Gray is the first college pitcher the A’s have selected with their first pick since 2007 when they tabbed UC Riverside right-handed pitcher James Simmons.
