The events were well attended with everyone saying how well the occasion catered for all age groups. Thanks must go to the musicians on the night, Dez Johnston, Steven Love, Geordie Low, Robbie Thomson and ‘Jocky’ Phinn who gave their time freely to make the events go with a swing. Thanks also go to Mike Thomson’s bonfire building team who did such a grand job and the Rothes Firemen who organised the fireworks. Graham Jefferson’s video marathon was also much appreciated and an occasion will be organised for all to view. This Month’s Sponsor Lodge St. John (Operative) No. 193 The Rothes freemason’s lodge, St. John (OP) No. 193 was founded on the 3rd August 1795, by the operative masons engaged in the building work which was ongoing at that time in the small town of Rothes. Many of the stones from the ruined castle were utilised in the building work. In the early years only operative masons were allowed membership of the lodge. This rule was gradually relaxed and non-operative masons were allowed to join, but not until 1864 was a non- operative mason allowed to hold office in the lodge. The Rothes lodge has occupied quite a few different premises in the town in its time, before finally settling in the present lodge rooms. Doubtless, many readers will remember the ‘goaties’ building as it was known then in the town, where the Hanover home is now, next to the church. It was vacated in 1983 and the present lodge rooms were built, on the site of the old Cadet hut in North Street. The work was undertaken by the brethren on a volunteer basis, the building work being carried out by Past Master Greg Milne who is currently the lodge secretary. Brother Greg built the walls himself, in true operative tradition, and organised the workforce. We are very proud of our lodge and of our traditions which have spanned four centuries. In 1995 we celebrated our bicentennial and the lodge was rededicated by the then Grand Master Mason of Scotland, Lord Burton. Currently our Worshipful Junior Warden Bro.
