This week’s “Blast From The Past” features the McLeay building, erected in July of 1912 in the newly formed town of Stapleton. The Enterprise reported, “In July of 1912, most of the material for Dr. McLeay’s two-story building was on the ground and work of construction was to be commenced at once and finished as quickly as possible. The post office was to be located in the building. Neale-Stone Drug Co. was located in the McLeay building. It carried a stock of drugs, oils, paints, varnishes and a general line of toilet articles. Dr. McLeay, physician and surgeon, had his office in the building, along with E.L. Sayre, Jr., notary public, abstractor and realtor. The Stapleton pool hall and short order restaurant counter, was also started in the south room of Dr. McLeay’s building and a picture taken of the pool hall with a calendar on the wall, indicated it was operating there in April of 1916. Several people have asked when the McLeay building was torn down and Sharon Dailey of Stapleton brought in a clipping taken from the April 16, 1970 issue of The Enterprise with a picture of the building being torn down. The Enterprise reported, “The old drug store and garage on the main street of Stapleton is coming down. Work was being done by Mr. Lyle Houpt and his crew, who are in charge of dismantling the two-story brick building. The building was sold to Mr. Marion Cooper of Gandy at a tax sale. Work on tearing down the building has progressed very rapidly, considering the bad weather, and at the present time all of the garage is down and most of it has been cleaned up, except for some parts of the wall along the north side of Chesley Barber Shop.” After the lot was cleaned up, a new building was built in 1972 by Gerald and Jerrilynn Godfrey and it was known as The Village Inn. Bruce Allen purchased the building in 1984 and sold it that same year to Ken Pitkin Enterprises. It was renamed The Snack Bar and was operated by Tim and Jon Karn. Wilbur Allen owned the building from 1985 to 2013 and operated it as Allen’s Lunch. The building is now owned by Frank and Kayla Kramer and houses Country Envy, a boutique store. COLORECTAL SCREENING

the Callaway District Hospital Foundation, Callaway & Arnold Medical Clinics, in conjunction with Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney will be sonsoring a colorectal screening for our local area. Anyone over 50 years of age or anyone of any age with troubling gastrointestinal (G.I.) symptoms are encouraged to participate. Several medical conditions, including cancer, can cause bleeding in the G.I. tract. The bleeding can be slight and go unnoticed for months or even years. Fortunately, colon cancer develops slowly (and painlessly) over a period of ten to fifteen years. Common (adenomatous) polyps, which are among the causes of bleeding, can be benign (non-malignant) but pre-cancerous. And that is one of the main reasons for searching out hidden blood in the G.I. tract. Starting you can get your kit from the Callaway Hospital by calling 308-836- 2228 or clip out the coupon below and mail it today for your kit. Please be aware that this test is no substitute for regular checkups with your family physician! All kits must be returned by . If you have any questions please call 308-836-2228.

To order a colorectal health check kit, fill out this form (print or write plainly) and send to: Callaway District Hospital 211 Kimball, P.O. Box 100 Callaway, NE 68825
