Bob Greenwood Ski Scholarship by Craig O. Olsen

The Bogus Basin Ski Club routinely gives back to the community. An example of that generosity is a ski trip donated by the BBSC to the McCall Winter Sports Club. The donated package for two included lodging at the Hotel Bigelow in Ogden, Utah, skiing at Snowbird, Snowbasin & Powder Mountain, and a dinner. The McCall Winter Sports Club successfully auctioned off this donation at their Snow Ball on December 8, 2018. The auctioned package brought in $1,700 that was used for the Athletic Scholarship for two worthy youth racers in recognition of Bob Greenwood’s life long contribution to skiing and racing. At The McCall Winter Sports Club’s Annual Hometown Races and Après Party on January 5, 2019, Leslie Josie (U12) and Aiden McLean (Big Mountain Pro Track) were celebrated L to R: Barbara Bryant, Leslie Josie as the two junior athletic scholarship recipients. & Bob Greenwood, (Aiden McLean not present at time of award) Bogus Basin Ski Club members Julie and Michael Bouton, Barb and Donn Bryant, Dottie and Bob Greenwood, and Kim and Jim Hovren attended the Hometown Races in Bob Greenwood’s honor. Special thanks to Barb Bryant for securing the travel auction items, and many thanks to Michael Bouton for arranging the partnership with the McCall Winter Sports’ Club. Recognition should be extended to Chris Costa who facilitated communications between BBSC and McCall Wintersports Club. Ken Rider, Resort’s General Manager, also helped to bridge the relationship between the two clubs.

Both athletes demonstrate a passion for skiing and the opportunities the sport presents to progress as an athlete and grow to be a model teammate and citizen. Thank you Bob, Bogus Basin Ski Club, and the MWSC family for a wonderful event!” Intermountain Rendezvous at Sun Valley by Paul Markowitz (Photos by Don Pribble)

This ski trip was sponsored by the Intermountain Ski Council of which Bogus Basin Ski Club is a member along with twelve other ski clubs. The council was started in 2007 at the Snowbasin Resort by a handful of interested ski club leaders from Pocatello, Falls, and Cheyenne. The idea was to join forces and increase buying power through organized ski trips and lift ticket discounts. For several years the Intermountain Ski Council has sponsored this ski trip at Sun Valley that has been very popular with Bogus Basin Ski Club.

As the name of this article implies, it was a sun- filled week (January 5-12, 2019) for the 35 people that came and played on the runs. The cross country skiing and snow shoeing was sunny and enjoyable.

There were late afternoon dips in the very large hot tub while some of the more adventurous took a “dip” in the snow. Friends of club members from as far away as Tennessee joined with

The Saturday evening get together was well attended.

Zermatt Ski Trip - January 2019 by: Michael Bouton (Photos by Don Pribble)

The whole trip went along as advertised, EPIC. The three main ingredients I always want to expect from a trip I lead are: Safety, Fun, and Inclusion. I think they were all covered in this trip. I wanted all 44 participants to enjoy the resort as well as the skiing; but the added activities were icing on the cake, and they came with no extra charge.

Upon arrival at the resort we were greeted with a light buffet and a “no-host bar” and learned from Max Jensen, our host, what to expect during our stay at Zermatt. We then gathered for our tour of the Ice Castles that were fabulous. The lights, the colors, the cold, and then we found the fire.

Scenes from the Ice Castle. Day one began with our wonderful breakfast that was repeated each day of our stay.

Then it was load up the bus and travel to Sundance . Everyone was looking for “Bob” (Robert Redford) but he was not to be found that day. We had a great tour of the mountain by Max and some Mountain Hosts. Most folks found their way to the Owl Bar for food and beverage before loading the bus for a return to Zermatt. The crater was calling.

The Homestead Crater was only a few hundred yards across the street but Andy, our driver, had the bus ready for us to ride over and then waited with the bus warming to bring us back when we got out of the 95 degree water into the 20 some degree breezy air. The water felt soo good and everyone looked younger the next day. It was amazing!

Soaking in the the Homestead Caldera, known locally as "The Crater.” It is a natural hot spring surrounded by a rock dome. Day two (Saturday) was a longer drive to Brighton Resort, which was busy. It was interesting to find that every access to the lifts was upstairs so our legs were ready when we got on the . It was another bluebird day on the slopes with great snow. I think everyone found their favorite trails and some powder stashes. Andy had to take the bus back down the canyon due to “No Bus Parking,” but he was back at the prescribed time to pick us up for the 50 minute return trip. We met up with a few of the Park City Mountain Sports Club members in

the Pub before leaving for our dinner, and we enjoyed our brief meeting with them.

The Back 40 Diner was a blast. We had the whole Yurt to ourselves and everyone had an opportunity to get to know each other. I disclosed some unknown stories about someone at each table to get the discussion going. It’s surprising what one can learn about their fellow club members on a ski trip. The experience along with the dinner entrees was terrific. Everyone loved it.

On day three we left early for Solitude Resort to avoid some of the traffic. Well, it wasn’t early enough. They must have cancelled church due to snow conditions. We had another great sun- soaked day with some powder — you just had to find it. I think this was most peoples’ favorite resort.

Lunch on the patio of Last Chance Lodge at Solitude Ski Resort. We had Sunday evening to relax at Zermatt and some people went into Park City for the Sundance Film Festival but still didn’t find “Bob.” It was an exciting time with a lot going on. The big thing was we could sleep in tomorrow morning.

Day four began with a leisurely breakfast, not quite as early and quick. It gave everyone time to gather their gear and heads before going to the bus where the packing puzzle began. Low and behold, we did find a place for Tom Mohr’s suit case. If we would have had to drag it behind the bus, it would have taken an extra hour to get back to Boise. That thing was heavy.

All in all, I think it was a great trip with fun from beginning to end. It was a fitting way to end my ski club career of leading trips (28 of them.) Thank you to all that came along to make it happen. It was a blast. Mardi Gras Soiree 2019 (aka Crab Crack) by Barbara Bryant (Photos by Steve Strickland & Don Pribble)

Ullr Fest 2019 by Vicki Kuebler, Ullr Event Chair (Photos by Steve Strickland)

Over 26 Ski Club volunteers helped make Ullr Fest at Bogus Basin on February 2, 2019, a tremendous success for hundreds of guests who enjoyed talking to vendors, winning 39 raffle baskets, participating in the parade down the mountain and the Ullr games of ring toss and corn hole. We crowned a new Ullr King and Queen, Mark Barnard and Kim Hovren, and enjoyed the presence of Ullr himself, Ron Abramovich, and Skadi, Margie Ridgeway. A very special thank you to our tremendously talented and entertaining emcee, Yeti! You rocked it!
